The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

So after alot of talk on HDR photography in the Post your best here thread, I've decided to start a thread for all budding and seasoned HDR shooters to come together, share tips and tricks, talk about software and techniques on the subject, and hopefully shed some light on the rather obscure parts of the technique.

So if you shoot HDR, try to shoot it, or want to shoot it, post your questions, tips, tricks, and results here.

    Cheers.
    Matt.

Should also say thanks for mentioning the Photomatix update, I'd forgot to check. Not tried it yet tho.

    The 2.5 BETA?

    Its ALOT better then 2.0.
You have seperate controls for the saturation of the highlights and shadows, a temperature setting, which adds a blue or orange cast, but nicely.
    Its a really good upgrade.
I'm lookin' foward to the full version.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

Here are the porgrams I use, at least I use some of these.

CS3, hopefully yall dont need a link for that.

    PhotoMatrix http://www.hdrsoft.com

    FDRTools http://www.fdrtools.com

Dynamic Photo HDR http://www.mediachance.com/hdri/index.html (only for pc)

And the only free software I know of for hdr, Qtpfsgui http://sourceforge.net/projects/qtpfsgui/

    Hope these are helpful, gtu734

Matt, the version I downloaded doesn't say its a beta of v2.5. In fact it claims to be v2.5.1.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

I guess they've finally released the full version.
    I'm downloading it now.
I'll test it out once I get it installed. Got a few files that need processing.

I heard things about this other software, where you tell it what parts you want at what exposure, and it sets it, but I cant remember the name.
    I'm searching for it now.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

Thats one of the ones I dont use, from what Ive found PM is the best, then there is fdr and cs2/3.  DPhoto is really cool though, I do use that one and find it comparable to PM, but havn't been able to see an official test or anything.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

Ooooo - who can catch me up with a Noddy guide to HDR? I've tried HDR blends in CS3 but they look rubbish either because I'm shooting the wrong stuff or because I need a tone mapper.

What do I need (bearing in mind I'm Mac only) and where do I start?

Jonathon and Pete, try the link to Photomatix at HDRsoft above, there's a tutorial on there and you can download a trial of the software.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

Just had a look at your gallery, Matt, and was impressed by your HDR stuff.  I think it might be nice if you could post some simple tutorials on how to get the best from it.  Look forward to catching up with this thread later.

    *bookmarks thread*

Good idea! I've had a lot of fun using Photomatix, either cheating by adjusting the exposure of a RAW in lightroom and saving as seperate TIFFS, or by doing it right and taking a series of shots at different exposure values.

Some of my shots i've been impressed with, and it has definitely taught me to look at a scene with different eyes before i shoot, IE i look for the amount of contrast in the scene as a priority, and am amazed at how much detail this technique can bring out in the skies, even clear blue skies!

I was really impressed with your shots Matt - great work. Really smooth. Most of my shots ended up being quite noisy in the sky (though not in the shadows on the ground) Also i found that Chrom Aberrations could be quite pronounced in an HDR image.

When do you do your sharpening and noise reduction? After tonemapping in Photomatix? What settings do you use in Photomatix to avoid noise etc?

Here's a few of mine - i find that i tend to 'warm them up' temperature wise as it has a good effect on the skies. Some of these are from 1 RAW and some from 3 RAWS, all are just experiments to be honest so don't be too critical!

Jonathan - don't know about Mac, but there is a good explanation of tonemapping  on Photomatix here, with some useful links - http://www.vanilladays.com/hdr-guide. I expect it is the same for PC and Mac.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

I am totally new to this concept – I only really found out what HDR was by reading the thread on Post Your Best – and I’m fascinated by the stunning results you guys are getting.

I would love to give it a try but have very little experience with manipulating images at all let alone this kind of thing.

So what would be my easiest / cheapest route to have a go? Is Photomatrix a stand alone product or do you need Photoshop as well?

At the moment I use a Canon 20D (which I believe can do exposure bracketing) but I only have Elements 2 and a basic RAW processing package that came with the camera.

    Great thread BTW.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

I have been experimentng with HDR for the past couple of months and feel I am still on the steep up-slope of the learning curve. I have tried Photomatrix but found it a little unreliable with regards to alignment on ocassions, I also found it caused haloing, nothing that could not be fixed manually in PSE5, I am currently doing all my merging and blending manually as I prefer the results. (I too found CS3 a little on the Rubbish side of good for HDR - only had the 30 day trial and could not justify the cost for what it gives over PSE5)

My biggest problem in getting HDR to work has been movement in the scene, water and trees mostly. I am now using a hybrid method of taking multiple exposures in RAW, then using one or more of these raw images to generate TIFF files at different exposures and then adding these to the original files for merging, typically:

Take 3 raw exposures, spot metered off the Sky, forground and shaddows, open these files and adjust to over and under expose so that I end up with 9 TIFF images. I then choose which images to merge, possibly all, possibly 3 or 4, when movement is present in the shot, such as trees blowing around in the wind, I use the 3 TIFF's from a single RAW file for that part of the image so that the blurring is eliminated, or at least cut down to a minimum.

I prefer to spot meter for exposure rather than use bracketed exposures as I feel I have more control that way. I find myself being rather heavy handed with the processing at present and ending up with images that look interesting rather than natural, I'm sure this will improve with practice.

The most useful bit of kit I have found for this type of shooting is my notepad and pencil, so that I can make notes of what I'm doing out in the field for when I get around to processing.

As I said above, I'm still learning and welcome any comments / hints.

    Great Thread!
