If we can't come up with a solution between us what chance do the Government have? Wink [;)]

I wonder, given today's technology and the advanced studies in psychology, if it's not possible to invent or cobble together a foolproof lie detector?

There is no such thing as a fair trial available anywhere, no matter how high the moral standard of the society. Witnesses, even honest, supposedly unbiased ones, give flawed testimony. Not because they are malicious but because there memories are compromised by lots of subconcious factors. If a foolproof lie detector existed it should be easy enough to determine guilt or innocence quickly, do away with trials and more importantly, trial lawyers. No trials, no terrified witnesses. There would be the facts and the detector's results and an appropriate sentence of the guilty.

Sodium Pentathol or Scopolamine are fairly efficient at wheedling out the truth, but as yet their use is illegal in police interviewsSmile [:)]

Actually, they aren't, neither is the currently used Polygraph machine. I don't know about the laws in Britain, but here in Canada Polygraph tests are in admissable in court. I seem to remember something about psychology trials being conducted reading iris or retina reactions as a determiner. Then again I suppose if it was possible the CIA or MI5 or even the former KGB would have found it. There'd be no need then for Guantanamo Bay or Abu Grahb.

I suppose that one of our biggest problems, if it hasn't been said already, is that we have all our oil in the North Sea, but the dipsticks are all in Whitehall.

Another point regarding the threads on polygraphs, they wouldn't be needed if we were allowed to exercise some discipline in society. People talk of human rights, but surely an individual's rights must at some stage be over-ruled by the rights of the majority. If we sent all the illegal immigrants that we have in custody, that would release a lot of prison places, so we could lock up more real offenders. Then they should have to earn the right to be released through work and/or education.

When I worked in Feltham YOI (young offenders institute) most were in for drug abuse. When they were released they re-offended. They didn't know any other life, they had no experience of personal discipline and just couldn't function in this world. They certainly couldn't get up every morning to go to work. They had never done such a thing, and most couldn't live on the wages they could get when they were used to having  thousands in their pockets.

Discipline, but corporal punishment, is what we need. And a return to integrity and honesty.

Well that's what I think, anyway.

    ABERS:

    Graeme Mather:
I have one short thing to say on this matter.  You watch these documentories on police crime etc. and all you get is these louts shouting at the police saying "You cannae touch me" or words to that effect, and the police can do nothing about it.

I think it can be summed up in one phrase.   They know their rights, but don't know their responsibilities.

    I agree Graeme.

My dad is a policeman, and many people who get arrested, say its "only cause im black", maby 50 years ago yes, but come on grow up.

Also when i was watching an american police drama thingy, i was really surprised that they let a dog hold down a man on the floor whilst biting his arm in a very agressive way, because he stole a car. This is harsh, and something you wouldnt see in this county; but I say that  is right, and criminals should be treated like that in britain. But if the police did treat people like that they would get sewed for "racisum" or being "sexist".

Its stupid, jails should be strict...NO telly, NO games, ect ect.....
they are old anough to know what is right and wrong.

and illegal immagrants should be put in jails in there own country!

anyway thats my second rage on this thred.

The thing is though, what human rights can be overruled? From a moral standpoint anyway. If an immigrant gets into trouble, goes to jail for...stealing a car, then does he deserve to get sent back to  a war torn country to be possibly killed? Especially when we as a country dont endorse the death sentence for anything. I agree we should cut down on the rights of defenders, as it does seem that offenders seem to have more rights then the victims in current climates, but I feel that we have the moral responsibility to ensure that these people are treated humanely, with atleast basic food, water and shelter (not a cosy room with a tv though, as they seem to get these days).

Its a fine line though, how do you decide if someone is really in danger if they get sent back to their home country?
