Apparently its quite easy to rig a meter, but its also supposed to be quite easy to spot by the people who provide it, and its quite illegal.

And quite quite dangerous...unless you go in for the curly singed hair look.

    Yup Big Smile [:D]

I think you need to rewire it so that it bypasses the counter/meter and goes straight where its wanted.

But its also supposed to be quite easy to spot, as if someones recorded energy usage suddenly plummets for a long time then investigation is needed.

I think it also shows up in some way at other parts of the process. I cant remember though, my dad told me a while back.

I'm looking forward to the new job... I'll be working for our Revenue Protection and Debt team. They're a small group of people who are responsible for countering debt problems and the illegal abstraction (theft) of electricity. Everyone on the team deals with 'aggressive' customers as a matter of course and where necessary liases with the police and courts. It can be a bit dodgy at times - we had two staff in hospital last year after being attacked whilst retrieving an unpaid debt but it doesn't happen often (and that's why the pay is pretty good).

    Congratulations on the promotion!

In my line of work, I have encountered a few folks in what will be your new role and I can honestly say that I wouldn't want to do it. At least with my job I get a baton and pepper spray to defend myself with if needed.....all credit to you!

Oh, and as for Jeremy Kyle show - I dealt with a job once in the kind of household referred to here. I was talking to the couple in the hallway and was then 'invited' into the lounge where the TV was blaring away in the corner. I started to get confused when I heard two sets of the same voices, talking over each other as I was trying to write my Pocket Book up....I looked up at the TV to see that the couple I was delaing with were actually being broadcast there and then on Jeremy Kyle!!

What annoyed me today?.....the sister in law 'to be' that has told us with less than a months notice that she wont be attending our wedding which means my other half's four neices won't be there either! She has known of the date since December '06 too. Families!!!

That's about the most basic explanation but in essence, that's what most people try - and it's usually spotted once the house has been razed to the ground! 6mm Earth cable bridged across 16mm mains cable doesn't make for a safe electrical installation! Big Smile [:D]

    adesw:
...But its also supposed to be quite easy to spot, as if someones recorded energy usage suddenly plummets for a long time then investigation is needed...

It's not always easy to spot... There are some very sophisticated methods for bypassing the meter and they can be incredibly difficult to detect. Our systems (along with all other utilities' systems) are geared up to flag up any sudden drops (and increases) in energy consumption. In most cases, it's either a change of lifestyle or a change in the occupancy of the property that causes it.

I was told of one instance where a fiddle was suspected but we couldn't prove it. There used to be a little box of tricks that was available to make or buy (even assembling the components is illegal now) that would reduce the speed a meter registered by increasing the resistance on the load... In other words, the more you used, the slower the meter would turn until it eventually started running backwards!

Two of the RPU guys went to the house on a repeat visit. One was under the stairs looking very carefully at the meter installation and the other was stood in the hallway. This guy spotted what looked like an old-fashioned telephone (with the separate mouthpiece and receiver) sitting by the front door. Out of curiousity, he lifted the receiver to see if it was working 'cos he'd never seen a phone like that before. At that point his colleague under the stairs noticed that the meter had started running backwards. After a few attempts to figure out what was going on, they realised that the phone in the hallway was actually a 'dummy' and was in fact a 'black box' for fiddling the meter.

It transpired that everytime someone came to the front door, the occupiers would put the dummy phone 'on the hook' which would disconnect the black box from the meter and all would look normal. They were also careful enough to adjust their energy consumption slowly so that it wouldn't get flagged but something (or someone) alerted us to the potential problem. It seems that the house had been decorated recently and all of the cabling for the 'black box' was hidden behind the meter position and was also concealed behind the wall and under the floorboards... It's no wonder we didn't spot it!

Not only did they get prosecuted but they also had to repay what I think was about 3 years worth of electricity.

Thanks for the congrats Matt... I'm looking forward to getting started. We do get issued with a kind of pepper spray made with what smells like clove oil called 'Bite Back Spray' - it's supposed to be a dog deterrent. Apparently it works on people too and according to my local community copper, I would have defence in law if I used it if I felt threatened. Because it operates on a similar principle to a deodorant can, it's not classed as a Section 5 weapon either (obviously).

Works on dogs hmmm, could do with some of that every so often. That's the downside of our pepper spray, it doesn't work on dogs. It just really, really annoys them and makes them want to bite you!

I agree with the advice from your local bobby too, but most importantly, just try and stay safe. Get home in one piece, that's always my aim. Has to be said though, some days I'm far more likely to suffer a nasty paper cut than I am any other form of attack.....that's Police bureaucracy for you!

Even so I thought that all chemical based defensive weapons were restricted? Or is that just pepper spray itself...?

    What Annoyed Me Today?

Having another retarded idiot mistakenly assume that my chosen job has some bearing on my intelligence! I've now had three people (two from this forum) make derogatory remarks about my intelligence based on the assumption that my job is in some way 'menial'. One of these idiots has also had the unmitigated gall to claim that he's been hard done by on here recently! Talk about hypocrisy!

So I'm a meter reader... so what! I enjoy my job and it pays well - well enough for me to be able to enjoy myself.

At least I get off my 'arris and work for a living rather than sponging off the social and/or spending ALL FLIPPIN' DAY pontificating and making one inane post after another on here!

    Jealousy's a terrible thing I guess!

Oh yeah, and another pet hate that's reared its ugly head lately... I hate offering advice or suggestions to someone only for the recipient to outright fail to have the good manners or decency to say thank you or even acknowledge the original post!

Well said spiritflier.  A job is a job and only a means to an end, i.e, to put a fire in the grate and bread in the bellies of your family.  As for those who don't reply with a thanks for the time and trouble people go to help them, well, sod 'em, that's what I say...Wink [;)]

Now accountants, Estate Agents, solicitors and bank managers - that's another issue altogether...Big Smile [:D]

After having had a great week in Sheffield, some numpty trashing my car on the M1 on my home Angry [:@]

He's offered to send me the price I paid for it 2yrs ago by cheque ... he says his insurance is fine but he doesn't want me to be without a car.  He took my friend to the airport after the accident whilst I waited for the recovery Northampton to Heathrow and back is a fair distance as he has to collect his brother, so seems a genuine kind of guy.

Not quite sure what to do ... anyone have any ideas?

I walked into Jessops in Canary Wharf and asked the store manager if they had any Stofen Omibounce's.. she says, 'what's one of them?', so I let my 430EX off in her face and explained that they reduce the pain of this particular experience. Friggin numties.. might as well go to Dixon's!

I assume the police got involved and that their check showed he's insured? Might be perfectly genuine but seems a bit odd - unless he's got so much money he just does'nt care! I'd make sure you've got all his details 100% just in case the cheque does'nt arrive - or bounces.
