    My macro lens arrived today!

On ebay it said 'good condition'.

I was quite stunned when it arrived without a single mark or blemish, and was even in the original packaging! It's probably twenty years old......

Re: What made you feel good today?

the   reason  this case was brought was a thug who beat up a woman was charged but she refused to go to court.so the case never went to trial so he obviosly wanted his dna removed to save being caught again .hope the next time he beats up somebody they dont die .i think all people shoud have their dna taken if you are innocent it will prove your innocence, only the guilty should worry

Re: What made you feel good today?

I tend to side with hevans on this one, assuming of course I'm correctly interpreting his WMMFG today post. People have seen all manner of rights eroded over the years but for goodness sake if there's one value we should cling onto until the bitter end is the right of being innocent until proven guilty. DNA databases, fingerprints, cameras on every street corner and ID cards where will it all end? Before we know where we are we'll all be having to report to our local cop shop every morning to explain our actions over the previous 24 hours. It shouldn't come down to thoughts of guilt or innocence, the need to worry or not, but more a question of 'principle'.

Or those who are misidentified by "matching" DNA tests.

Skip over the one about identical twins (they have very very similar DNA but differ if you look at enough of it) - DNA "fingerprinting" is far from an exact science.

Unlike fingerprints it's not known whether two people can have identical DNA. What they can have is close enough to match for the purposes of a forensic test. In 2000 Jeffrey Crawford was sentenced to "life + 60 years" in prison because the jury were instructed that his DNA matched that found on the victim of a crime 2 years previously. The odds of a random "African American" matching the DNA found is about 1 in 970. Pick a thousand black guys at random and you could prove one of them did it (yes, I know that isn't how probabilities work).

And that's disregarding the possibility of contamination and chance transfer (bump into somebody in the street and you can leave trace DNA on them - if they are later murdered you'd hope there was a chance they could see it wasn't you). Or even of planting DNA. It's a lot easier to scatter somebody's hair at a scene than to leave their fingerprints.

If it was safe reliable and accurate I'd be all for a database. But it's not - so I'm not. It's a great tool to narrow the field of suspects or focus investigation but it's currently shown by the press to be infallible - and it ain't.

WMMFGT? Getting off the rower, walking outside and seeing the steam come off me. No feeling like it.
Kidography. It's like photography. But more fun.

My point is that if you have never been found guilty, then your legal position should be EXACTLY as it was prior to your arrest, i.e. innocent with no record. If the DNA is kept, then there's a presumption of guilt that tarnishes your record. To make it a fair system: everyone should be systematically included so the entire population (except of course for those illegal immigrants that don't exist in society as...well...they just don't exist)  or ONLY those whose guilt has been established should have their data kept.

It's all down to the presumption of innocence. Otherwise it's a punishment for nothing other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. So no, it has nothing to do with political correctness.

Hands up those that think DNA evidence is perfect? I don't, but the courts and juries like to believe that it's infallible - just like with fingerprints (and don't get me started on the pseudoscience of lie detectors). If there's a 1 in a million chance that the DNA is matched with yours....and there are 70 million people in the country...that implies that there are 70 other suspects in the country (assuming that the system is  working perfectly - a complete and accurate reading is usually not available, so 1:1000000 is probably very optimistic).

Re: What made you feel good today?

With a good sample, or multiple samples, DNA can be pretty accurate, and reliable.
But like everything else, theres bound to be mistakes here and there.

I wouldnt mind a DNA database.
    Have it taken at birth.
I reckon it'd probably deter crime.
What with shows like Bones and CSI, which are pretty accurate, and as we've seen on Crimewatch and such, 99.9% of the time, no matter how careful you are, you're goin' to leave a trace, normally something carrying DNA.

Its like whole ID cards thing over again.
Granted, I wouldnt pay for one, but if I was issued one, I'd be fine with it.
The people that are all up in arms against it are normally the people with something to hide, or having nothing better to do then cause a fuss about something thats not going to make much of a difference to their life.
We carry credit cards, debit cards, NI cards, phone cards, drivers license.
Its like because it has lots of info about us, its going to be bigger. We wont have to buy new wallets or handbags, not that I have a handbag. Although I do have a manbag.
    I'm rambling now.

Oh, Andy, I've been getting the best spam emails recently.
Do they think that cause its nearly Christmas, our Christmas spirits kicked in and we'll help them shift $57,000,000 (57 MILLION US DOLLARS) via multiple accounts?
