Re: Chat for Weekend Competition 6-7th Jan 2007

Hi all, and thank you very much.

I guess a special thanks must go to Cedar for the idea of the Weekend Competition and also to Hugh for all the hard work he puts in on the organistional side of the competition. Then we have the members who go to great lengths to post comments/critique, so a special thanks to them.

However without the members who take the time and effort, plus a great deal of thought and skill in producing the photographs,  the competition would be a non starter, so a big well done to all the participants of the Weekend Competition.

Quite a few members have asked the question of how I produced my photo of the bottle of "Fizz".

Well I had to leave the answer to this question until the voting had finished, otherwise I doubt if I would have recieved any votes at all.

Last weekend I had just one hour on Sunday in which to produce my effort. Fortunately for me I had a very sleepless Saturday night.
It was then when I came up with the idea of the bottle of plonk and how to achieve the effect.

I was always taught Prioritise, Prioritise, Prioritise. So first on the agenda was open the bottle of wine and drink it.

Second was to drill a hole in the bottle so as to fit an hose pipe. Turning on the water gave me the fountain effect (as suggested by Hevans)

The cork was very simple to do, I took a photo of the cork then isolated it from the background with the intention of pasting it in an appropriate position above the bottle.(This would have been the better way)

Unfortunately time was running out on me so I used  a short piece of wire which I stuck into the cork and then onto the back of the bottle with  a little "blue tack"

That's all there was to it. Sorry if it spoils the illusion for some folks.

Have been giving some thought for this weekend and at the moment top of my list is colours with the emphasis on the colour black. Not a combination of B&W and colour, so idealy produced within the camera.

???Huh? [:^)] Don't understand this. Black and white arn't really colours so are you looking for a shot that's mainly black or of something black or a very colourful shot with a lot of black in it? Sorry I'm a bit confused with this.

    Congrats Harry! Great pic.

I'd just like to say that as a newcomer to the site, well as new to the site as I am to photography (1st SLR at christmas) that what a great site it seems to be that I've found. With a great community.

I've already learned lots from the site and the weekend competition is great. It gives me a chance to be creative. To try and get to know my camera. Gives me a goal and target and makes me think.

Its also great to see other people's interpretations of subject matter and what ideas develop. Its good to see how others approach the same subject.

The banter on here also seems fun. So thanks for helping me on what I hope is a learning curve!
