    sue allen:
Er...don't we always have to eat? Down to the EU and it's Common Agricultural policy i assume. A country that can feed itself is surely more secure than one that relies on imports. Perhaps we need to get back to eating food when it's in season.

No, It's just that the government want to protect agriculture, and as british farmers cant keep up with foreign farmers to provide food and sell it on cheaper it means the cant compete with imports. To stop this the government limits imports and subsidises alot of money into english farming, which not only makes out food more expensive, but it means tax money gets sent away from where it is needed.

If it was left to the free market the british agricultural industry would most likely collapse, imports would be unrestricted so we would be able to choose where to get it from making it cheaper for the consumer.

The only reason not to let this happen is paranoia, and possibly for the balance of payments.

Re: Random thought of the day

But if the predictions are right then there could well be food shortages throughout the world and importing everything might not only be very expensive but progressively difficult in the long term. Just seems a bit stupid when we've got such good land for growing increasingly expensive crops like wheat - could end up like Zimbabwe! Food is too cheap - it must be or we would'nt throw millions of pounds worth away every year.

Re: Random thought of the day

I'd say its not a case of "It's too cheap" but its not valued highly enough. It is pretty cheap atm, but it is rising, and will continue to do so. The waste of it is more of a social problem and will happen no matter what the price is. What the supermarkets need to do is to reduce the prices and stop forcing "buy one get one free" offers down peoples throats.

Infact, Id suggest that supermarkets waste far too much food, because bread is so overpriced that the companies can afford to buy too much of it, sell it at a huge gain, and then throw away the waste. I cant prove this, but it must be whats happening, as Where I work a heck of alot of bread being thrown out each night, because we have a surplus 90% of the time, and this has been happening for years.

I think cabbages are also supposed to be one of the most wasted foods, as people buy whole ones, take off a bit then throw it away when it starts to go a bit crusty.

Fact is, no matter what we will run out of food, and there is not enough land or willing people in the country to feed the population. (How many people these days want to work in agriculture?) Eventually I reckon we'll get to a point where all of our food is imported, and in the long run we may end up with a situation similar to that of the oil problem (just without government tax) with global supply being short of global demand, and I dont think we'll ever be able to meet this demand, even if we do rejuvinate (sp?) our primary industries. So that leaves lowering demand, and the only way to do that is to shrink the population. Which is why we need a good old war Big Smile [:D]

Either that or those guys in white coats can make something to speed up food growth to a efficient rate to feed the population.

Now I think I shall go and get a drink, I've had 3 1/2 hours of economics exams (Which are like  essays) Writers cramp..

This is what they've been optimistically relying on for years. It's not a sustainable assumption for a solution to the problem of overpopulation. In the end there's the old conservation of energy and materials that you run up against: there's only so much space, and so much energy available, when you hit the limit, it hurts.

However if they could alter plants to absorb more energy from their surroundings then they might be able to speed up the process for growth. However as you have said, we shouldnt be relying on them.

I'm surprised you said this, considering that space is expanding everywhere! Wink [;)]

Anyone notice that there are 100 pages on the What Annoyed You Today thread against 71 pages on the What Made You Feel Good Today thread.  Can one surmise therefore that we are a lot of moaning, dissatisfied and grumpy so and so's? Big Smile [:D]
