Blinking migrain started around 4 just before going back to work. Then ended up having to do everything for everyone because half of my colleagues are either incapable or cant be bothered to get on with it.

Took my "new" (to me anyway) car to the "You can't get better than a K..K F.. F.....ER" place last week for a brake check (they do them free) They phoned my wife and advised that the "spring clips" that hold the brakes in place had all broken the brakes were shot drums were knackered etc and would cost £395.00 to put right (the car cost me £650.00)...

So after a brief panic phoned me best mate who said get new drums, shoes, springs etc from a car parts supplier and we'd fit them at the weekend, shoes, drums etc approx £120.00 springs main dealer part only £30.00. Took brakes apart at the weekend SWEET F.A. wrong with them. The drums nearside drum slightly worn offside absolutely fine, shoes did need replacing (fair enough they were about £12.00) and all the springs were in place.....Nothing in writing so can't take any action against the K..K F.T outfit but really bloody annoyed with them....at least I have brand new brakes but if I hadn't had a mate to help me do them......Super Angry [8o|]

Over the years I've become more than suspicious of car workshops, the frustrating aspect being so many things on modern cars have become non-DIY items.  My previous car was a Cavalier, which I always took to the local Vauxhall dealer; for some reason they started commenting on how I'd buckled/damaged a couple of my alloys (never the same wheels either!), but a local independent garage could see nothing wrong.  Eventually on one occasion the Vauxhall dealer stated two wheels were so badly damaged they were dangerous, and even had me sign a dsiclaimer before I drove the car away; 6 weeks later the same mechanic passed the same wheels thru an MOT without any comment - I guess I must have had self-repairing alloys!

5th gear did an MOT cheaper than sending it to the dealer, just did it themselves

"whos running frozen tomorrow? Pauls off and nicks doing grocery?"

    "you are"

    "no, Im only working 11-4"

"russ phoned up and he was sure that you were running it"

    ...

*sigh "I'll see you at 7 then"

If I didnt want the money so much..

Cant wait untill i have an actual day off. Whenever that happens!

Friend of mine owns a wrecking yard (don't know what you guys call them, its where binned cars end up)
He did a thriving business selling used parts, but you knew they were because it was a wreckers and you saved even more money if you were willing to pull the parts yourself. Anyway, the manager of a rather large chain of car repair centres used to come to my friends yard and buy used parts. He'd take them back to his shop, clean them, paint them, then sell them as refurbished parts. Same chain allegedly repaired the entire brake system on my Dad's car about a month before he died. Had to get the car MOT'd to change the title after he died and took it to another place who said needed a complete brake job. I said, how can that be? So 'n' so company just did them. The mechanic then takes me to the car and shows me all the old rusty parts still attached to dad's car.

    Re: What annoyed you today?

Weeeeellllll......as I work for a garage that's been in business for 50 years and gets most of it's work through recommendation, and has customers who are on probably their tenth car we've sold them I'd ask you not to tar all garages with the same brush! We usually have at least one car we're breaking for spares - a handy way of getting cheaper parts for older cars to keep them on the road.....and no, that does'nt include brakes parts!! Trouble is we're a dying breed. Although we have the best software we can get for fault diagnosis, the makers are good at tightening procedures so much it's impossible to do all jobs so people are forced to pay over the odds at main dealers. EU law says they must share information but does'nt say it must be affordable and even that might end soon.
The unfortunate thing these days is that so many people simply have no mechanical knowledge - and i mean none. They phone up to say their oil warning light is on and you ask if they've checked their oil  ....'no, but you serviced the car nine months ago..the oil must be ok surely'....and the number of times a car comes in with the correct tyre pressures is pretty small....good for the tyre retailers as they tend to wear more quickly! Ooh customers...love themWink [;)]

    Re: What annoyed you today?

Sue I would NEVER tar all garages with the same brush, there are two places we use for our car(s) both pretty good and reliable and we went by word of mouth, but one of them has been in business for donkeys years (and will remain so I suspect as sports cars are their speciality) I took the toyota to K F because they do the free brake check and there was a lot of travel on the brake pedal also previously this branch had put right a mistake another branch had made and gave us a discount (basically we got really good service so we very happy with them). I have my suspicions that they didn't even take the drums off, it's approx 5 miles from me, when me and mate did the brakes at the weekend we had to use a hammer to gently tap all over both drums to get them off they had in my and his opinion not been taken off at all in which case how did they conclude that the brakes were shot, and all the springs were broke, and this is a national outfit....give me the independant garage anyday

    Re: What annoyed you today?

Having spent most of my working life in the tyre industry I'm well aware of the "sales techniques" that are employed to bolster turnover by the service arm of the industry.

Getting a car on the lift for a check is the first step to finding at least one "defect" that needs adjustment or replacement, if you don't that's your bonus for the month up the Swanee. If you go in for a replacement exhaust, pound to a pinch of salt you'll be put into a state of extreme concern that your shock absorbers are about to disintegrate and you will end up in a ditch or some thing more horrendous.

The founder of a large service chain had the  avowed intent to get every car in the UK through the door just once, and then he'd make his millions. Whether he achieved it I don't know, but he retired a multi millionaire.

Sue is York, Ward and Rowlatt still going?
