I dunno what rear curtain sync is, but thats a great shot Harry.

    Thanks shelfy

    front cutain sync

Generally, the flash sync fires at the moment when the front curtain is at the beginning of its peak opening. This is called front curtain sync, and it is used to freeze motion at the beginning of the exposure. Front curtain sync is adequate for most flash-photography.

Some cameras offer the ability to fire the flash sync when the shutter is at the end of it's peak opening. This is called rear curtain sync and is used to freeze motion at the end of the exposure.

If you look carefully at the photo you will see quite plainly the effect. I used a couple of old photo floods, these detected the initial splash going upwards, then the flash fired, so you also see them coming back down.

    Hope that makes sense.

    Harry

Hevans, I must have been typing my reply more or less at the same time as you. Getting the "Crown of Water" is no more difficult than getting the splash at any other point, as you say, it's just a case of getting the timing right.

Good idea for the thread - Shaun, I think you made the right decision - really like the web.

Here is my second choice - others are on my gallery; please let me know what you think.

Like the shots especially no2, the one of moving water, every time i try something like that i end up with an overexposed screen.

This is my rejected one, actually this was the intended one, but I uploaded the wrong one to the comp :)

Top Totty, IMO that would have been a very strong contender if the duck had been in sharp focus. That's how most of my flying bird photo's come out.

Forgot to add, the flower is a very late flowering huneysuckle

Harry, you can still change the entry by going to your post, there should be an "Edit" button above it. Click this one and you can change the URL to the photo.

The honeysuckle is definitely the better of the two, and a most impressive feat. Some might even consider it showing off - I know I do!Smile [:)]

Thanks H. Just someone with loads of time on their hands.

Yes I realise I can change it, but it's all a bit of fun, so I'll leave them as they are.

Thanks oRGie. It's really quite simple, but you do need a macro type lens and extension tubes, not forgetting of course the props. Grass with dewdrops and a flower head.
As I have great difficulty at working at ground level (arthritis) I bring the props inside

You do need a solid work surface and preferably a Tripod.
As all the dewdrops had fallen of the grass when I brought it inside, I used an hypodermic to place a droplet on the grass.

I focussed on the droplet, then handheld the flower in a suitable position at the rear of water droplet, approx 10-15 mm away from the droplet.

The big problem is a shortage of hands and getting the lighting right. So idealy flash with a softbox and some method of holding the props in place.

As a picture is worth a thousand words, I will later on today take a photo of the setup and attache it to this post.
