Where do we stand as regards manipulation of shots, e.g. do we prefer "as shot" or allow a reasonable amont of editing so long as parts aren't added or removed?.

I know some editing is required, e.g. to remove dust/sharpen/do b+w conversions.

should this be added to the rules or left up to the theme chooser as to whether manipulation is allowed.

    Just a thought.

Personally, I think this is something best left up to the person setting the topic. I don't like excessive editing, such as in the combination of more than one photo (although two shots of the same scene combined for exposure purposes - one of foreground other of sky). However, basic tidying up, such as you mention I have no problems with. If someone does come up with a gloriously edited shot, then it'd be nice if they enlightened the rest of us with how they did it...for the sake of educating us.

having observed the competition (and voted for) 2 weeks and taken part the last 2 weeks I think you've put together the rules pretty much as I understood them.  Well done and thanks.

Re: Weekend Competition: Rules and FAQ (for discussion)

H - I am happy with the rules you posted and really believe most are in agreement on the fundamentals of the comp.

Your post is clear and precise and keeps in spirit of what I think Cedar wanted to achieve.  The competition is a huge learning forum for me, as I have previously stated I have only been doing "Photography" for 4-5 (I think??) months now and I have learned more here than in all the books I have bought.

I think we should have a year end competition, whether we invite DC Mag or not is irrelevant to me I believe a final challenge for the year would be the dog's B****ks and in that Competiton we could then go for a first second and third place giving it more of an incentive and each place would earn a "cheasier" title to add to their signature.  Hell with the winners forum we could have our own CalendarBig Smile [:D]  and beat the "Calendar Girls" anytime. lol

At the end of the day the prize for me is the comments I recieve on my pictures (pos or neg) and the acknowledgement that people are viewing my images.Smile [:)]

Re: Weekend Competition: Rules and FAQ (for discussion)

    Hi Guys,

A couple of additions to the rules, but nothing dramatic:
    1. I've specified that any discussions/arguments/modification proposals, etc to the rules should take place in this thread. This will keep it all together in one place.
    2. a little niggle, but I also specified that the summary post and POLL should list the entries in the order in which they were submitted.
    That's it.

I have no problem with manipulation of shots being entered. They can be great fun.....but I've found that within this forum the it's generally frowned upon, so If you're going for votes it's not advised.Big Smile [:D]  .....now due to this I've learnt more about my camera and getting it right first time, in camera which in the end makes the tweeking later easier if it's needed.

First of all "Congrats on the Win" Dave, my vote went to Veggie but you are a worthy winner.

I don't think that the odd tweek, crop etc matters too much, however I believe that within this comp the whole idea is to understand our cameras and to get the best shot we can, not just press the shutter and then create a masterpiece in what ever software we have.  As said before, the quality of submissions is growing and getting better, proof that having someone else choose the subject, inspires us to get out and look.

can someone explain why the use of photoshop or any other computer program is frowned upon. in my view, photography is an art, the camera is a tool as is the computer in generating the image you wish to show the world. is it wrong to use the tools you have to the best of your ability? most of my photos are as is or slight tweaks to levels etc. but for fireworks i thought combining several pictures gave a better effect. [ my first attempt i posted was pretty bad as i didn't understand layer properties and how to merge properly] but this was picked up in this forum, i quickly learnt something new and reposted.

It's a personal thing, whether you're a "purist" and believe the shot coming out of the camera should be the only one used, to the anti-purist(?) that feels anything goes.

Personally, I can see the point of view of both, and would consider myself somewhere in the middle ground. This is one reason I believe that this shouldn't be in the "rules", and should be left to the weekend topic setter, if they feel passionate about it.

It's hard enough for the participants to get one good shot over a short weekend with only a few days warning of the subject, even harder to get two and then merge them - hence, I don't think this is a problem. But what if one of the shots was from the summer, when the sky was nice and that was merged in? How would that fit in with the time frame shooting criteria? By limiting it to simple editing, we keep the competition simpler and avoid the greyer areas.

I was thinking that you could just post the subject, and a link to the rules listed at the beginning of this thread? That would give sufficient info for the participants without the potential confusion of which rules to follow.

The rules in this thread are still under debate, but as no-one seems to have raised any serious objections or contentions, then I think we could consider them relatively stable (beta release??).

More of a suggestion than a rule, but it would be nice if voters left comments on the image they voted for in the portfolio section.

I agree, but to make it easier, if when posting your entry you add a link through to your gallery, then it'd take them straight to the page where they can add the comments. In a lot of cases, currently, you have to search for their gallery, then find their entry then start to add comments - a tad tedious and user antagonistic.

An entry like the following is ideal, as by clicking on the photo, you go straight to the gallery (feel free to add comments, btw Wink [;)])

Re: Weekend Competition: Rules and FAQ (for discussion)

how do you post your picture in this way, i copy and paste mine, but this doesn't seem to add a link.

as to the response earlier the rules clearly state that the picture must be taken between midnight fri and sunday so any sky from last summer would make the picture or composition ineligible.

    Hi

Please forgive if this is a really dumb post but it's my first and there's so many threads that it's hard to keep track. Ummm - what's the theme (or even IS there a theme?!)  Soz...  Thanks....dave.
