Re: The grumpy old gits thread......
Camera clubs. If you fit in, you're landed. If you're slightly oddball, good luck.
It seems the local camera club doesn't quite know how to pigeon-hole a hybrid photographer. Digital? Nah... he uses film cameras... Leica as well. Film? Not quite, he has a DSLR. Erm... is he vocal? Only when asked... and then there seems to be no limit to his knowledge. He doesn't show prints, he says he's p*ssed off with "Blatently manipulated images winning". He's bought darkroom equipment from the camera club auctions, yet he scans his film negatives. Er... well, he's a b+w worker, so he fits in there. His work, although not outstanding, isn't bad. But... just what the hell is he? He's actually submitted work to the camera club website, but... ... well, there's some avid DSLR user. He's an annoying social dropout who takes his laptop wherever he goes. Get *him* on the comittee.
Camera clubs... have a two-fingered salute, and kma!

Pleasure - amazing what a bottle of wine will do .
Oh OldBoy I tried lying down afterwards and ended up getting about 2.5 hours sleep ... so you can imagine I'm extra grumpy today LOL!
Did you never watch CHEERS and FRASIER.
Maybe an odd one or two but I just don't find them funny, give me Billy Connolly any day!
Cheers Moon

"Cheers" was light entertainment. "Frasier" wasn't funny... at all. Billy Connolly... now he does get me laughing, as does Jack Dee.
No, I don't find "Peter Kay" funny. He's from Bolton y'know?

Re: The grumpy old gits thread......
I seem to be getting more and more annoyed by the BBC news being used as a platform for whatever incidents occur against their employees - or rather the lack of perspective shown in deciding how high a profile such reporting requires. BREAKING NEWS: Natashia Kaplinsky broke a nail! Live action reportage after the sports news. We had a non-stop series a few years ago with the Jill Dando murder. Sorry, but people are murdered on a regular basis, and, while they might not be celebrities, they are still people. Ok, this was special because she was murdered by a stalker and the evidence against the convicted was perhaps tenuous. But Why do we get/need hours of coverage of the murder of someone that reads the news/ does makeup for the BBC/etc? Admittedly, it's a personal tragedy and not to be trivialised by those that know the vicitim, but is it really significant to the rest of us? What started this off was a report of a make-up artist by her husband...and his arrest. Sorry, mr editor, but this happens all over the country on an unforutnately regular basis. There's nothing remarkable about this story, other than it's one of your people that was murdered, and for me that is not adequate justification for raising its profile above other similar cases. ARRGGGHH!! These people need a bit of perspective added to their thought processes! H.

Don't quite understand what this is all about.
I like the phrase "hybrid photographer", is it a euphemism for someone who desperateley seeks to be different?

I think it's about frustration with the human need to classify people, and the example is from camera club experiences. As an individual, it's nice not to be classified, but to be taken as is, which is usually an oddball collection of inconsistencies and contradictions. This is particularly true in a well established social group - everyone wants to know: where you fit in, how you'll affect their standing within the group, and how you can help them. Once they get to know you well, the threat you pose to their position is reduced (usually) and then you're judged more on your abilities than their perception of what you are. I was informed on a recent course that there are several stage of group dynamics: forming-storming-norming-performing. And the addition of any new member to such a group that's above the forming stage will usually result in ripples/altercations/readjustments in the group dynamics that can push the group right back to a previous stage even all the way back to the forming (starting out) stage. I think this is what BD has encountered, as it's particularly noticable by new members in well established groups, those groups that are in the norming stage and heavily into groupthink.I also like the term "Hybrid Photographer", but to me it's someone that's not seeking to be different, just open to new techniques and wants to blend them with the conventional ones. H.

moonlustie:Thanks Paul - but all the civil servants would leave if I became PM .... mmm maybe that would be a good idea, start afresh LOL!
Thanks Cairntoul *bows deeply*.
I'm a civil servant - we don't all sit round drinking tea and obstructing the good ideas.
I'd still vote for you.

Sports on News programmes are really annoying there a sports channels why cannot the sports news remain there. Sports reporting on a news programme really grips me as I hate football I could not care less about sport why waste my precious time in the morning reporting about it. I hate over payed football players being reported as they are really important people.
Vent over!!

ABERS:Don't quite understand what this is all about.
The camera club I attend seems to require members to be pigeon-holed before they'll readily accept you as normal. Then, once that's done, the competitions can be less anonymous, as your work is readily recognised.
... and voted on accordingly.

It's a term of phrase someone else came up with in another forum, to classify someone who uses film but scans the negatives in on a computer.
