Is this what you two are talking about perchance?

Well, I was thinking about how the ball is moving the slowest at the top of the swing, and stays there much longer than at the bottom, so the transparency of the ball in the swing will be least at the top of the swing and most at the bottom.

Hmmmm, now I want to get a strobe light with a reasonably high frequency, say 1/10th the oscillation period.....

Great pictures this time, my personal favourite is the canoe - real feel of motion. I also liked steve12's image ( what is it!) and Robs clock ( although I prefered the first version). Harry's apples I wasn't sure of - but looking at on my large monitor at work today really showed the image at its best - my laptop didn't do it justice. Really difficult to choose this time.

Thanks to those who voted for me - MY FIRST VOTES!!! I feel that I have actually won POTY!

Thanks for comments on my gallery also - nice to have some feed-back at last.

    Looking forward to Friday now!

    hevans:

Bluecabbage: nice car trails, it really needs to be viewed in full size so the road paint is visible, which improves the interest. but more is really needed, the picture lacks a focal point, or something in the foreground?

Spot on, have no idea what happened when posting this one, it seemed to scrunch up on the screen, Oh, Well such is life.

Foreground interest, well there's a thought. Picture the scene, 6'4" male, dressed in black stood on a road bridge taking photo's of passing traffic on an (as I thought) quitet side road, WRONG!, dozens of cars passed by when I was waiting for the light to calm down, most of which either hurled abuse, beeped their horn's or in several cases actually threw McDonnald's coffee cups, most nearly full, at me. I can only assume they thought I was part of the traffic safety (speeding) scheme.

It would have made a nice shot of me dodging flying coffee, definitely motion, unfortunately I had nobody else with me to capture the shot so had to make do with this poor excuse. I think I will stay indoors next time, no mater what the subject matter. lol.

Re: Weekend Competition: The Best Photographer in the world (14th-15th Oct 06)

Some excellent photo's posted again, so a big well done to the top three.

Hevans asked the question is it the same apple in my attempt. the short answer is yes.

The diameter of the apple is larger at the stalk end, so by placing the smaller end away from me, then giving it a slight push the apple moved in a circle, By firing my flash twice I was able to include the apple in two positions. The trails being achieved due to the ambient light.

Was quite a lot of fun getting the timing right and as Hevans mentioned with his excellent attempt I needed three hands, well actually in my case four. One to set the apple rolling, another to trigger the camera remote and then a flash gun in each hand to manually fire the guns.

As I said earlier in this post all good fun and a learning process at the same time.

Looking forward to the next assignment/competition. Hope it's something that can be done at home or in the garden, being a full time carer can be quite restrictive.

Well done to you all.  Some really clever shots uploaded again.

Unfortunately (due to other commitments) I couldn't enter this one, even though I chose the subject.  Looking forward to the next challenge though. Wink [;)]

Re: Weekend Competition: The Best Photographer in the world (14th-15th Oct 06)

    hevans:
kevip6: It's a nice shot of the wheel, but the motion is kind of lost. Try playing with the shutter speed so the wheel is only turning ~10 - 20 degrees (?) in the photo. I like the ghostly capture of the ball, but where did it go when the flash went off? Did you use a flash, or is it a superpositon of two shots? How did you get the ghostly ball, but clear numbers?

Thanks for the feedback hevans. The flash was a seperate flashgun bouncing off the ceiling, that gave the ghosting of the ball and then as it was continually moving after that it hasn't left any exposure anywhere. This flash also exposed the numbers on the wheel. I guess seen as the ball is wooden and the numbers a high contrast plastic that the flash produced a more vivid exposure of those. I tried playing around with and without flash, two seperate flash points and varying shutter speeds. I guess others i took convey motion better but lose the mixture of detail and motion combined. It's great to get feedback though so thanks for taking the time to provide your thoughts.

My first time in the weekend photo comp though and i really enjoyed it (dispite the zero votes Crying [:'(]) so only one way to go from here Smile [:)]

Thanks again, and great work from all the entries. I personally voted for Jack2 as i thought the sharpness of the bike and rider with the motion background was really striking.

    thanks

Re: Weekend Competition: The Best Photographer in the world (14th-15th Oct 06)

Thanks for the feedback Hevans - you are right in that I should have tried panning with the carousel and maybe even freezing some parts of the action with flash, but I didn't have long on Brighton peir as I was with some friends and instead spent most of my time trying not to over-expose the shot as it was so bright! As soon as I saw the other entries, good ol' hindsight kicked in and I started thinking aof 100 ways I could have improved the shot, but at least I know for next time. Actually knowing someone who was on the carousel may have given more incentive to take more shots too!

I really like the kayak shot, it stood out as an excellent example of motion capture; as did the shot of the child on the slide which gave a good sense of speed and fun too. I thought the shot of the mountain bike was technically very well taken and I was wondering if perhaps the frame could have been filled a little bit more to give even more of a sense of action? (Jonathan Ryan has some great bike shots on his site if I remember rightly).

All the shots were good and there were some really varied takes and great ideas on the subject of motion.

Looking forward to this weekends comp! Smile [:)]

    Well, the voting is over!

It looks like oRGie slipped through with another great victory with his Flying BMX.

Congrats, oRGie, well done, it's a shot that showed great technique, composition and exposure and bravery in the face of flying cyclists.

Now for the hard part, you have to think of another topic....

    H.

PS. I'm terribly disappointed with you all for not giving me more votes Crying [:'(], oh well, maybe next time.

Just an idea, having not read any rules or alterations, it might be beneficial if the winner (and subsequent subject chooser) does not enter the competition that he/she has set the challenge for.

The chances of the same person winning for a fortnight are slim, I know, but this would reduce those chances. Also, there's nothing to stop the challenger from choosing a subject he/she is quite adept at.

    Hi BD.

well, I don't think there'd be a genuine problem unless you won and set the subject of B+W antique photo gadgets, or Sue Allen set the subject of water fowl. Wink [;)]

As it's all for fun, personally, I'd vote for not excluding anyone.

Thoughts on this, though, are best expressed in this thread.

I wish, just once, I could be surprised by the number of lovely people in this world.Sad [:(] At least you got some free coffee?!

It'd be more amusing, a 6'4" male with long beard and dark muslim dress standing on a road bridge near heathrow taking photos.....Wink [;)]

I see you weren't taking the health and saftey issues seriously, wearing dark dress near a road at night....good on ya! Devil [6]

I'd pay to see that Big Smile [:D]!
