I've finaly decided after much dithering, here's my entry

Take your pic which door/gate/window etc counts, I think there's at least 4 in there.

Oh and check the toms growing in the front garden, this really was a bizarre little place.

Allen, if you use IE the easy way is to use copy and paste from your album.

Re: Weekend competition - The Best Photographer in the World (21st and 22nd October 2006)

Ok, we've all had a chance to view the shots, now how about some comments? Too many to comment on individually, but I'll throw a few out there to start it off (Wife's already complaining about time spent internetting...Sad [:(]). Remember the usual disclaimer about the comments: they reflect my own personal tastes, and by all means feel free to ignore them Smile [:)]. If you're happy with the shot, then that's all that counts!

bluecabbage: your's was my wife's favourite. I would have liked the verticals a bit more parallel, and vertical. Maybe play a bit with photoshop/GIMP/paintshoppro?

Richsarg34: your's was one of my top two favourites, but the full sized version seems to be a bit oversharpened, or something. Very nice framing, though.

georgeaye: I preferred the colour version as well. Maybe play with the B+W conversion a little?

jack2: Liked it, but...did you get one of all the arches down the alley as well? While not a gate, I think a shot of the concentric framed arches might be amusing.

AnthonyMiller: A good subject and nice shot, like the pipes, et al., but maybe a diffferent time of day? I find the shadow's a bit too horizontal. Maybe a tighter crop to loose the grating and curb at the bottom?

Boltondave: good gate! It should keep the horses out, and aquatic motorcycles, and anyone without wellingtons. Shame about the sign in the top left, I find it distracting. Nice B+W conversion, as usual Wink [;)]

john175bramley: Also one of my top two favourites! Wouldn't change a thing.

David Bracher: Really like the originality of this, nice high-lights in the face - almost traces the contours of her face, which isn't the slightest weathered.Wink [;)]

Kevip6: Very nice door, nicely framed with the hollyhocks, maybe crop a little off the bottom?

oRGie: as last week, and the week before, a nice shot (beginning to get tedious, innit?Stick out tongue [:P]). Have you tried to get more of a harsh silhouette of the people with a bit more mucking about in the editor?

Chris West: Nice shot, I like the highlights around the ladder, really makes it stand out.

Time's up, gotta go get the baby its bottle! Everyone else: Great shots, all very interesting with the different takes on the subject. Hope you enjoyed the weekend!

PS. Any chance of someone out there giving me a sympathy vote??? Big Smile [:D]

Hevans, thanks for the feed back ( I did take some through the arches - my favorite below - though again prefer it in Colour) - I have to admit that I have only just realised what your photo was!  Orgie - yours is my favorite this week - although I also like Chris Wests - I lightened it a bit and the hatch showed up well.

    Best of luck to all.

Heavans I'd like to say thanks for the feedback as well. As far as your picture goes I don't know if you've got your monitor set to some other colourspace? On my PC your image is literally black and white (ie. just black and white pixels). I didn't like saying anything before as I thought you were going for some arty effect but it seems like Jack2 sees the same image as I do.

Appologies if the image is supposed to be like that and I just 'don't get it'.

I don't really feel qualified enough to comment on other peoples shots yet but I'd just like to say my vote went to Orgie because I just loved the atmosphere of the picture and could almost smell the sea air!

I feel the same John, there's so many very good photographers and so much experience on these forums.

I liked so many of the shots it was really hard to choose only 1 to vote on, went for Steve's in the end, really liked the mood of the shot and (dont tell her mum) but your niece looks really quite spooky :) My fav's are Richsarge34's, Georgeaye's, Jack2's, John's, David's, Top Totty's, hevans, love the imagination, Harry's, Sue's, Veggiesosage's and Haley's so many to choose from and that was after much deliberation on all the other shots posted. Thanks for the comments and votes for mine, I'm truly amazed and so glad it was such a popular subject. Anyway, another day for voting, good luck all Big Smile [:D]

Yup, it's supposed to be like that. It was the only shot I was able to rattle off at the weekend, and was taken with the compact camera. There wasn't a lot to play with, it was a very dull, lifeless grey day (see original shot here). When converting to B+W, this was the only version that even began to appeal to me - and is a tad artsy-fartsy. (No apologies necessary).

Re: Weekend competition - The Best Photographer in the World (21st and 22nd October 2006)

    Thanks H.

I did actually straighten up the gates in one or two of my many variants but it just seemed to look better like this, to me, perhaps a trip to the opticians is in order. I have to say I did enjoy this weeks comp, I have read quite a bit recently on B&W conversions but this is the first time I have every really had a go at it - nice to be made to try something new.

Well done to everyone - great quality images this week.

    H. I did get yours straight away, 3 1/2 hours on the ground in Newark recently waiting for a backlog in immigration to clear before they let us off the plane has burn't the image of a gantry into my mind.

Re: Weekend competition - The Best Photographer in the World (21st and 22nd October 2006)

Hevans : Thanks for the comments. It's good to see someone brave enough to do that. I find I'll only comment if somebody actually asks for comments or help. Knowbody really seems to like negatives. I still dish them out now and again but only when I think' Wow that's a great shot...if only you'd just....'

Now I see what your B/w shot was, I like the idea...Though I'm not too keen on the pure black and white effect. With a crop and a bit of dodge and burning I feel it could have worked fine the other way.. It all takes time though and a weekend with our partners wanting company too makes this tough. I've never had to do photography to a time limit before and this is what I also find interesting about everyones shots. We all know with time we could do better. It just makes you say ' ahh what the hell we're all under the same time limit...what can they expect for a weekend shot. Considering some haven't done B/W conversions before I think they've all done well and hope they go on and do some more. There's something timeless about a good B/W and they look great blown up big on the wall, where colour shots can be too overpowering for most rooms.

I've taken shots with long exposures before, mainly fixed objects without people in but this comp gave me a chance try something different I wouldn't normally have thought of. So thanks Orgie. I never realised how low the light from a fridge was. 4 second exposure...that's a long time to keep the missus still.Big Smile [:D]

You'll probably hate me for getting all Arty Farty but ever since seeing this shot by Roy DeCarava 1951 I've always wanted to shoot some thing with this low light sillouette feel.

Not that my 'Missus in the Fridge' quite cuts it.Big Smile [:D]

Looking forward to seeing all your shots in the next challenge.
