Ok, here goes, no offence meant, any critism is meant to be constructive ![Big Smile [:D]](/emoticons/emotion-2.gif)
Georgina, I like the modern take on games and the treament is striking. Richsarg34, classic, cracking shot. Top Totty, great shot, this is where a picture tells a thousand words. Kevip6, I like this, combined a lot of the options for the comp. Jack, Nice idea, but a bit busy and let down only by the quality of the glass marbles. Nomadr, Good pic, reminds me of a sunday paper advertising illustration. Oldboy, great action shot, but no faces and maybe a crop into the action would have helped. David, love the detail of the ball, shame you couldnt get the club blurred to show its motion, a tad dangerous for that I guess. Steve, good pic, only missing some atmosphere for me. Veggiesosage, same as with Steve's imho, but I think you got a bit more atmosphere in yours. Allenh, nice shot, you can tell who's young and who's a bit older by the games we choose ;) nduffy, nice try, good subject, I personelly can't leave a pic with the dreaded digital fringes, so maybe if you'd posted a resized version a bit bigger in the thread and not linked to the full size. Ste Jones, love this photo, as I said above, it reminded me of smarties soon as I saw it, comp, colours and dof all say great photo to me. elusive, interesting shot, what lens did you use or is the pack of cards like that ? Rob, nice idea, shame about the marks on the board and a bit flat if you know what I mean.
Now the hard part, who to vote for, its between Top Totty, Richsarge and Ste Jones ............

None taken I know my entries the last couple of weeks haven't been great, but will try harder next time. Last night i had just got back from being away all weekend and decided to have a go anyway, the shot is flat as you say, i was originaly going to have some tiles on the board and light it a bit better, but with 3 minutes to midnight i could find the board but not the tiles , so just stuck it on anyway.
Great shots from everyone this week, will comment on them later on, have to go now.
Looking foward to next weeks competition,
Rob

Re: Weekend competition - 28th-29th October - The best Photographer in the World
i really dont know how to put this nicely, the winning photo was not good, if this picture had come up on a critique site it would have been panned for having leg/foot missing. (no disrespect to top totty because it was the best picture after all)
if the crop was changed then yes it would be a good picure (but it should have been changed before submission) . i felt that the quality of the pictures posted was not great, my own effort was half hearted and rushed due to time constraints/ work schedules (my excuse anyway) and by the looks of things so were many others, i agree that the picture should be shot at the weekend (makes you go out and use your camera) but i think you should know your assignment by thursday at the latest in order to plan and organise .what i would like to see is the winning pictures from each week go into a "photo of the month" competition and the prize being your picture posted in DCmag, this would a) give us a worthwhile goal, b)get loads of free publicity for the forum in DCmag
In my view let us not forget that this site has a worldwide audience with over 52,000 registered members and only 46 actually voted. cheers martyn

hmm, i thought that if you had angled the board it would have been a winning picture, even a diagonal line would have been sufficient. composition helps .cheers martyn

Re: Weekend competition - 28th-29th October - The best Photographer in the World
oRGie:
To start of the proceedings, here's "Rats & Mice"

Canon 400D, Canon 18-55mm @ 31mm, Manual, f25, 1.0sec, 1st curtain flash (second curtain was rhubarb for this, although that was my intention) One layer added with high pass filter 10 ish %, blend mode soft light 70% opacity. Flash caught the movement, the long exposure got the rats & mice stationary.
hi orgie this picture is full of noise ,the movement is frozen (even at 1 sec due to the flash) so the bottom layer is fused with the top layer thus creating a lot of dice and no composition, i know the white dice are in focus and the darker dice are not but it doesnt make any diference, it still looks like the white dice are placed. no flash would have shown the movement and blur of the top dice thus creating a more dynamic and creative picture . cheers martyn

georgeaye:
i quite like your picture georgeaye but the highlights are too overwhelming , the competition was about weekend games ? always remember that a photo is viewed from left to right , top corner first (because thats how we read) , EXCEPT when there are bright spots and dark spots, our eyes are conditioned to look at bright spots first, so the last place i would look is the darkest place on your image (and thats the point of intrerest ) , always try and make the point of interest your brightest part (and stop blowing out the highlights, lol). cheers martyn

Hi Martyn, thanks for the feedback.. I was hoping to get trails from the movement, I did sort of get that on a couple of attempts, but in the end I preffered this one, you know its only 5 die, the white ones are them rolling around in a bowl and the dark ones are the same die, but caught still by the long exposure, so I liked that it created an illusion, sort of like they are on a mirror, but when you look carefully you see thats not possible, angles are wrong. I didnt think it was noisy, thats a rough black cloth covering a large bowl, you see the texture through the dark die. (the posted pic is 100% so you cant magnify) lol, I sound like I'm protecting my pic, dont mean to and do appreciate the feedback ![Smile [:)]](/emoticons/emotion-1.gif)
I think TT's pic was a good photo, the expression and clear determination provide plenty of composition, well done and better get thinking of next weekends topic ![Big Smile [:D]](/emoticons/emotion-2.gif)

top totty:

Please disregard the chess shot, this is my entry, it wouldn't let me delete it, sorry
nice facial expression,a shorter focal length would have got the whole person in shot, the clone tool would come in handy for getting rid of distracting shadows on left hand side. cheers martyn

Re: Weekend competition - 28th-29th October - The best Photographer in the World
Jack2:
Here's mine for this week.

Glass solitaire set on a glass table - Nikon d50 with kit lens, 3+ close up lens and star burst filter. Camera flash & slave flash under table.
Jack
a worthy entry with dof just right, i felt the crop should have been closer and without the ball missing from its place, the filter adds that little extra but the explanation is not needed,if you have to explain something then you have failed. a picture can be anything you want it to be, by explaining what it actually is spoils that illusion. i find it much more intriguing when viewers ask themselves how they think the picture was achieved. cheers martyn
