Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

thanks for that Sue. I read an article in a mag last year where they compared Canon,Sigma and I think maybe Kenko 2x against each other. I remember that the conclusion was that better results were obtained when sticking to the same manufacturer as the lens. The Sigma one also came out better overall, and its cheaper. Still paying off the new 5d, but I'll def be getting one when funds allow. I'm hoping it will also save me "needing" anything longer! Smile [:)]

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

    • Sigma APO 70-300mm
    • Nikon 55-200mm VR
    • Nikon 18-70mm
    • Nikon 55mm 3.5 macro
    • Nikon 50mm 1.8
    • Nikon 85mm 1.8

Hardly use the 70-300 - not long enough for real long shots, doesn't focus close enough for portraits, macro is only at the long end. Very slow. Bought it as it had such good reviews, but I didn't really think it through.

Took the 55-200 to Wales and forced myself to leave it on the camera for a few days, as I just wasn't getting the use from it that I thought I would. It turned out lots of very sharp images, and really persuaded me that zooms have their uses. The VR really does make a difference in low light. I'm going to use it a lot more.

18-70 doesn't get the use it did since I bought the primes, but still useful.

55mm macro is superb, even though it doesn't even meter with my D50, but that's not really a problem for me when shooting macro stuff.

50mm and 85mm I use for about 90% of my photography. Really fast for low light - a real plus during our dark winters. Very light, so I can take my camera with me when I go to client visits in London. Very small, so I don't look like a 'terrorist' when I take pictures around the city - the 85mm is the 35mm equivalent of a 135, but is smaller than my kit lens. I like having so much control over depth of field using primes - with zooms, I find I have to go to the longer end in order to get narrow DOF. Also, primes give such a bright viewfinder image.

However, primes are luxury used by amateurs like me - if I were a professional, I doubt if I'd have the time to keep switching lenses without missing shots.

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

Ah a thread guarantee'd to get many replies, including from myself. It appears that I have an average number of lenses.

Nikon 18 to 70 kit (because i still have uses for it)

    Sigma 24 to 70 f2.8

Nikon 35 to 70 usually fitted to my old film camera.

    Nikon 50mm f1.8

    Sigma 70mm f2.8 Macro

    Sigma 70 to 200 f2.8

I've also got a couple of teleconverters.

It was when she said 'put the camera down and come to bed' that I knew I'd finally gone too far.

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

I have a wish list to work towards:

    Canon 24-70mm 2.8L

    Canon 16-35mm 2.8L

    Canon 70-200mm L IS

    Canon 50mm 1.2L

    Canon 85mm 1.2L

Expensive tastes i know, you gotta make your dreams come true.

I have acquired a few lenses over the last few years but here's the list:

Sigma 30mm 1.4 (my main & most used lens)

    Canon 50mm 1.4 (Popular favorite)

    Tamron 90mm Macro 2.8

    Canon EFS 10 - 22mm 3.5 - 5.6

    Canon 70 - 200mm F4

    Canon 1.4 Extender

    Canon 70 - 300mm 4 -5.6 (a little too cheap & cheerful for me now)

Canon 35 to 105mm 4.5 - 5.6 (another cheap and cheerful but quite handy)

Canon 17 to 85mm IS EFS 4.5 to 5.6 (not bad - still trying it out)

    Big Smile [:D]

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

    I've got:

Canon 18-55mm (I think) it's the kit lens that came with my 400D

       Canon 35-80mm

Canon 90-300mm that I bought yesterday,

they are all about f4-5.6 I think - it's certainly enough for me for now and even if it wasn't the boyfriend wouldn't let me buy another 1 anyway (think my camera budget money has run out till birthday and xmas comes around again!) Although have had to buy a new camera bag this morning off ebay so I can get all the lenses and other bits and pieces I got in!

Not sure what else I need yet as I've only just started

Wow.... I'm feeling a bit inadequate now! Embarrassed [:$]

    • Nikon 18-55 kit lens (on my 'old') D50.  [not too bad]
    • Nikon 18-135 kit lens (on my new D80), [okay] although that seems to have given out to the...
    • Nikon 18-200 VR [good]
    • Sigma 10-20 EX [best lens ever]
    • Sigma 70-300 APO [a bit of a let down] (on it's way out)!

    Cheers, Steve.

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

Got to agree with Filter here. My collection Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro Canon 70-200 f/2.8 Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS Canon 2 x extender Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 Sigma 180mm f/3.5 macro Filter I'm sure you'll love the Sigma 24-70 my most used lens. I sold my 10-20mm on Ebay as it very rarely came out of my camera bag, I find 24mm plenty wide enough for me when using full frame. Harry Edited. I wish DCM would sort out the formatting for people using Vista and firefox. all the above text was nicely formatted before posting

I decided to give IE a go to see if the formatting problem was down to Firefox. Harry Edited. Still the same, so obviously DCM need to up their game for Vista users. Harry

Yes I agree most have too many -including YOU Andy - I have only 2 lenses !!!

Both are LIECA  DC VARIO - ELMARIT Zooms  - and both firmly attached to their cameras. Wink [;)]

    35 - 420 mm  on the  Panasonic DMC-FZ30

    28 - 280 mm  on the  Panasonic DMC-TZ3

If I could buy a camera with a 10-24mm - I probably would be interested  - then I would have 3 lenses - but it hasn't been released yet - so I wont - and I ain't gonna take out a 2nd motgage to pay for it when it does hit the market - any way - suffer from back problems so not intending to start on the DSLR Band Wagon - carrying enough  excess baggage - on holidays as it is - lol. Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

Thank you to Sue and Ian for their posts.

After much Internet research I have just bought the Canon 200mm f2.8 L USM II and had pencilled in the Canon 2x as my next purchase.  Will now go ahead and get it.

My other lens is a Canon 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM.  I find that it is almost always at 85mm for sport, wildlife, portraits and landscapes - hence the longer lens purchase which was the best quality, sharpest, longest lens I could afford at this stage.

I have made a vow to myself that I will buy only professional quality glass from now on.

Time for a shameless plug!  Big Smile [:D]

If any of you nikon users want to up your collection to include a nice sharp sigma 24-60mm f2.8 then you can bid on mine on ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130216261674&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=003

I managed to get my hands on a 18-50mm f2.8 for an outstanding price and now the 24-60mm is never used
