Have you noticed also the editors choice has stopped running! I agree that it should be Photo of the year however, there should also be a photgrapher of the year . Sometimes you are in just the right place at the right time to capture the shot, but for those who wait for hours for the right shot and do it over and over again their needs to be something there as well. I know students 11-14 yrs, who have just been in the right place and taken the great shot, very lucky however, some of them take hours to set up the right pieces, wait for the right moment and understand how and why it works. I am still waiting to take a good shot for the dawn till dusk section. Have you looked at some of the kids shots? One question though, how come we cant leave comments on their efforts?

Maybe someone out there knows the answer to this. Why is the  readers choice section  filled with all recent photos? There doesn't seem to be a reader's choice this year. It just seems to be filled with the most recent photos as they come in to the comp. Is there a problem with the site?

The reader's choice system currently uses a decay algorithm, so new photos will appear there. Each photo then begins to be replaced with new shots and move its way onto the 2nd page, 3rd and so on. If one of these photos is voted up, it will move up one. At the moment, as large numbers of entries are still coming in, it's a bit confusing - we're hoping as the focus turns more to voting later on in the competition, this order will be more obviously based on highest voted shots. Of course, we're constantly checking to see whether this is working, and may change the system if we decide it isn't.

Hi JD,

I take it from this post that you want to encourage people to vote on the pictures. I'm fine with that in principle - and have in fact voted for a number already. I just want to draw your attention to the fact that the procedure is not very user-friendly. It would be really good if it could be made to work better (or maybe I just need to understand how to make it work).

In particular once you've voted on a picture and want to get out of the photographer's gallery you have to go back to the start of the section again, or go somewhere else entirely - you can't go back to the page you were in. This means that if you've gone through 20 or so pages of portraits it takes 5 or 6 clicks (each one taking some time to take effect) just to get back to where you left off. Stepping backwards erases the vote or comment. I persevered for some time on Sunday but got very fed up and the drudgery will put me off doing more than looking at images again. I think that's a pity as there are some very good images that deserve to be celebrated.

There may be a clever trick that I'm missing: if so, grateful to be told what it is. I could just randomly look at a few front pages, but like going through a selection of portraits, etc., and deciding which I like best in each group.

OK i got a probably stupid question....
I've got a couple of shots of ships that i am really pleased with (ferries to be precise) but if i wanted to enter them what category would they go under?? I keep coming back to the 'hidden briatain' category in my own head as no one has ever heard of where they were taken lol
any help fully appreciated on this
