Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.
Stinkyfinger: mattharrisuk: Stinkyfinger:Just looked at your pics Matt and "oi know those railings", you live near me and they are of the foreshore down at Titchfield Haven, I think I've taken some similar shots (non HDR) :-)
They are indeed. Lovely little place. I go down there whenever I can to shoot, especially down the cliff path towards the caravan site, my new shots were taken down there. I'm assuming you live inthe Titchfield, Stubbington area then?
No, down the cheaper end of Rowner road in Hardway, Gosport, but that's only 3- 4 miles away and I often go down there looking for a bit of photographic inspiration, I also do a bit of the causeway between Warsash and Hamble (reccomended for summer evening with tripod and wide), I've been thinking about getting around to Hythe to try and get the refinery from a better angle, wouldn't mind using HDR for that to attempt a post apocalyptic sort of look, I've got some nice night time pics of Holy Rood in Stubbington too, I must get a gallery sorted on here.
Ah, Gosport, what a heavenly place. Its like the Bronx, but without the style, plus more crack addicts and babies with earings. I'm gonna try to get over to Warsash soon and maybe go up the Hamble. I wanna go down to the Hovercraft Museum in Lee, I went as a kid, granted I didnt shoot a D200 then, but I fondly remember takin' pics of every hovercraft. I'd love to shoot them in HDR. I'll be upping a few photos in the next few hours from experiments the other evening, I've toned them so they look less HDR and more standard photo, but still with the increased range, so watch this space. Matt.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.
Steve12:Matt yes used Photmatix I borrowed a copy from a guy at work , will buy my own copy shortly if all goes well , you said earlier in the thread about movement in the full size version you can see movement in the bushes top right and the rock formation looks a little, well how can I describe it a little stepped so to speak.
For a first attempt I am quite pleased, thanks again for your info on this thread.
I noticed the movement with the bushes at the top. Did you turn on Photomatix's movement ghosting reduction doohicky? Cause to me, it looks like its tried to make 3 copies of it, and thats what it normally does. If you did, try to make another version of it, but leave the blur reduction off, so you just get a sort of motion blur effect. The rest of the shot looks crackin' to me, the waters come up beautifully. Matt.

Yep, that's the place :-), the Monks Causeway starts at the car park at the furthest end of Warsash (straight on past the clocktower), runs for about 3 miles and is pretty photogenic though I've never been able to squeeze out the picture I know is to the right of the causeway where the kelp is cut into gulleys with water snaking between in at high tide. I didn't think the Hovercraft museum was still open (you might be right). I tried uploading a couple of pictures that will be familiar to you to a gallery but it hasn't worked (unless there is a period where they are vetted), maybe there is a file size I'm supposed to adhere to.

I might head down that way sometime when the weathers nicer, fire off some test shots. I normally shoot around Hillhead and Titchfield, or up in my area around stubbington, but farmers have a habit of chasing me. You'll probably recognise most of the shots that I'm gonna be uploading later, they're all around Titchfield Haven.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.
Guys I've just given photomatix a whirl and after a few dodgy tries with the same raw at different exposures which looked rubbish, I came up with this a proper HDR using 6 exposures. I'm well chuffed as it seems to be a lot clearer than by just choosing the best raw and doing the photoshopping as usual. I still need a better tripod as it's softer than I would want.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.
Thats a great shot mate. I've tried the different exposures from one RAW thing before, I hate it, the shots get noisy and the colours look even more false. You've got some good results there. I'd love to see more. Matt.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.
Cheers. That's all I have for the moment. I just dug out some RAWs that I took over the weekend. I've messed about with Artizen HDR software in the past and the results were not so good this was my very first attempt using the one RAW file it's an old one from Feb a couple of weeks after I'd got the camera. In fact I'd forgotten I had it. I've moved on a bit since then. :D

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.
That is a belter of a shot Vinson as are the beach photos Matt.
I took this last night of a cruise ship leaving the island. Like David I have done this from one RAW shot and produced 3: sky, sunset and sea, then merged them as per issue 52 of the mag and finally played with the levels on the merged image, all on cs2. The sky started to come apart though.

Great thread also Matt.

Thats a crackin' sunset there. thats the problem with taking multiple exposures from 1 RAW. The results to begin to degrade more noticably as you edit them, unlike from multiple RAW's, where they're made into one file. I havent tried masking and layering from different exposures yet, but I think I will, see if I can get results close to my HDR stuff. Matt.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.
Am I mistaken in thinking HDR is simply digital blending by another name. If so, I realise I have been doing this already for some time, so I might have been getting a bit confused. After trying the CS2 way, I was disappointed with the end result and googled for a better way to do it on the web. I found it, and the method I use (very sparingly I might add) is called the Layer Mask Technique and is absolute child's play to do. Details on how to do it can be found at Luminous Landscape HERE. There are three ways to approach it: The Painted Mask technique; The Layer Mask technique, or you can spend money buying software to do it for you. but I use the easiest Layer Mask method which costs nothing and gives the same results. I printed off the instructions and keep the hard copy in a folder just to refresh my ailing memory when I do it.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.
Followed your link to the Luminous Landscape tutorial Keith and all in all it was quite interesting. I must say though, that the examples used by Michael in demonstrating this technique pale into insignificance by comparison with some of the images posted in this thread although in fairness to Michael he did say that they were only rough examples and that further editing (curves etc) needed to be applied. I must say that I find this entire subject intriguing, and taking into consideration that over 90% of images shot by me are landscapes may now have to consider looking further into the application first mentioned by the OP. Oh Lordy-do, when will the expense of digital photography ever end?

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.
I feel the same way, Alan, and as you know, I mainly shoot landscapes myself. However, I think there is a danger of overdoing this a bit, relying too much on PS technique to get the desired effect when perhaps some attention to detail would be better at the shooting stage. Having said that, I don't think it is a bad idea to practice getting this technique down to perfection and using it for certain projects. I will certainly be considering it for my coastal project near to the end of this year and through next. As I say, I use the Layer Mask technique and find that you get varying results with it from shot to shot when altering exposure in PS. Best results will come when you actually shoot several images at varying exposures for the scene I suppose. So shoot for HDR. I think Michael only used two exposures for his example and I think for results as seen in this thread up to 7 exposures might give better results. So don't waste your money yet, experiment first. Here's a short, but interesting article on using HDR: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/high-dynamic-range.htm

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.
Keith I agree totally with your view. I borrwed a copy of the software from a guy at work, just to try it out as I did want to try the 30day trail due to the watermark feature.
Anyway here is one that I did this morning the orig I was very pleased with and while on site I took 4 shots, put them together and I am more than pleased.
My Orignal which I am very proud of by the way.

HDR - 4 images
