Re: CHAT FOR THE WEEKEND COMPETITION 19th-20th JULY 2008

Wasn't planning an entry this weekend as I was participating the Dunwich Dynamo, a 120 mile bike ride which started at 8pm Saturday at a pub in Hackney and finished this morning on the beach at Dunwich in Suffolk.  It was fun but very tiring.  I spotted this duo sleeping it off in front of a beach hut amongst lots of knackered riders snoring on the beach this morning.

My legs are like jelly and I haven't slept since Friday so off to bed now!

Lovely image Alan - I like the details and the subtle colour treatment. Hope you have a good break - all the sweeter I expect because you managed to get out of doing the poll. Wink [;)]

No, no Eileen, the deal is when you've all voted for Tringle and he's had a runaway victory, I will return the compliment.Cool [H]

I've just realised I haven't posted my pic in the entry thread!

well bigger this for a game of soldiers.

this has taken 35 minutes to post,,,crappy godforsaken rural infrastrucure. slow is not the word.....wireless broadband my 4rse...couldn't even get one pic in the entries thread to open in that time, couldn't get to see any of them, ...so I'm sure as       not entering this week.

good luck to all who do....if I get to do a review it will be based on my biased preconceptions of your usual individual levels of imagination and skill, as I will not get to see any of your actual images. so I will have to make it up as I go along for a change.

OH, and I vote for number 46.

The review should be with you sometime before next January....by which time you won't know what I'm on about....which is good, I like a nice level playing field.

One thing I noticed whilst taking a shot for this competition, is the amount of street furniture that blocks a clear view of a nice door. What with lampposts, parking meters, traffic lights and road signs, it impossible to get a clear shot. Sad [:(]

Having had my dsl crash (yet again) on Saturday morning, I have only just now seen the entries; all I can say is that as mine is the only one that contains, to quote the rules set by Abers which I notice even he has breached 'NOTHING BUT A DOOR IN THE FRAME', so it must be the winner, lol.

I promised Abers that I would set up the poll for him as he is off somewhere  taking what I am sure is a well earned break. I'm borrowing a friend's connection for this sole purpose - if it doesn't work I won't be able to get back to fix it until some time tomorrow.

Sorry to hear that you continue to have problems shelfy - I share your pain (tm).

Good luck to everyone. As usual excellent efforts by all.

I'm hoping the poll will be up on time - just starting it now.

lol Sorry Howard, your shots out.Big Smile [:D] The actual line is 'Nothing but A DOOR within the frame'. Your shot only shows half a door which goes out the frame...so I think we all fit but you.Wink [;)] tee hee

Good turn out this weekend. I can see why Abers bottled out of doing the poll.

Kate1308, I like the postcard effect. It looks like you live in a nice place. My only comment would be I would love to have viewed it the same shape as a postcard.

Thanks :) Unfortunately, I don't live there any more. I was visiting my parents over the weekend and thought I would make the most of the nice houses. The postcard look was kind of accidental - I just wanted to do a montage type thing and it ended up looking like a postcard, which is why it's not really the right shape.

Some really great entries this week - it's more than usually difficult to decide who to vote for. Maybe David B because it's such an original take and it made me laugh? But there are some other really good pics too... Confused [8-)]

Very sorry to hear about your connection troubles Shelfy - hope normal service is restored soon. The comp just isn't so much fun without your reviews.

Where is that golden door Oldboy - I'm sure I should know but don't? It's very striking.

    thank you Eileen.

still hoping to do a review before close of play...connection holding up...some Grat work in this week...particularly liking byiyeo's entry at the moment.

apparently its "silage" day today...so all hands on deck to splice the mainbrace and erm...cut some silage.

whoopee. I love being a pretend farmer.

Re: CHAT FOR THE WEEKEND COMPETITION 19th-20th JULY 2008

ah, silage...rain stops play, oh joy of joys...

Good stuff this week…and praiseworthy for the absence of any kind  of homage to Welsh microscopic dwarf rock ‘n Roller…Shakin Stevens…not a Green Door in sight,

Also no “In Through The Outdoor” references to irrelevant over-rated rock Dinosaurs, Led Zeppelin. Old hippies never die…they just smell like it.

Sadly no pictures of Diana Dors either, much to my great chagrin.

Alan Ingham - 'a door plus a lot more'  WOW…erm, groovy. I’d say its hard to capture the essential “Doorness” of this door with a photo…you’d really need to be there. .maybe even walk in and out a few times to fully appreciate it.

Shamanic satanic obsessive compulsive, this door is a labour of love. Puts me in mind of Mother Shiptons cave in Knaresbrough…those familiar with the place will know what I mean.

Is that a small plastic banana I see below the Italian flag…erm, is that James brown’s pic on the door…erm, is that?

Etc etc. very interesting…Is it yours Alan?

martin_hurton - 'Stage Door Left' …Dunno about the title. The door is quite clearly in the photograph and hasn’t left at all…it’s still there, I can see it, plain as day. I think a figure, walking by or standing here would really add to the character of the shot, but dunno if that would interfere with the brief….Fantastic old hall type thing, wonderful texture in the brickwork, makes this shot.

Strange that it hasn’t been redeveloped as a place of worship, a themed bar or a bingo hall.

There’s a similar looking bar in Northwood near Harrow, I was in there once…there was all these topless women who kept falling over clumsily…it was only later I noticed the sign…EVERY AFTERNOON - - - ERRATIC DANCERS.

adesw - untitled … not much scope for self-portraits this week. Another entrant lying drunk on the floor pointing the camera skywards. Could be the new black…unlikely though. Interesting angle, just lacks some oomph.

MPelly - 'What Lies Beyond The Door? Very good composition, very well shot and edited…no question. I’m just not sure whats going on…I have many days in my life  like that actually. The colour is not quite sure what its doing…and I have many days like that too. Clever indeed but not making much sense to me, ...…must’ve been listening to David Byrne.

bsmith - untitled …Like Kates…this has that feel of the Collage / tourist posters of Irish Doors, I like the idea…plenty of colour and stuff to interest the viewer, perhaps less so than Kates…but I say that cos’ its her birthday soon and I’m trying to blag my way in to the party. There could be like, erm, babes and stuff.

A bit too busy overall but a good idea Bob, you’ve almost pulled it off but for me, not quite.

steve bedder - 'Safe and Sound'…aye, funky indeed. Good take on the theme, fun and colourful composition…and always handy to have the combination to the kids piggy bank . for me, one the unsung shots of the week...I like it.

filter99 -'all ye who enter . . '  Sure is a big b*gger of a door. I would imagine passers by who were not familiar with the door, would, on chancing upon it, comment on what a big b*gger of a door it is. Then they’d mumble something under their breath about really having wanted to go to Alton towers. For sure a strong entry, and erm…a very very strong door. Great sense of scale to the composition.

angus57 - 'The Search Room' …dunno why but the moment I saw this, I felt an instinctive contraction of my anal sphincter….hey, some pictures just affect me that way…must have been that last five-stretch. And yes, I woulda gotten away with it if it weren’t for those pesky kids.

Really captures the feel of “asylum and institution”…A stark image that makes you visualise more than you actually see…very very clever.

briyeo - 'The Stable Door'  Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of something resembling White Rum…any ways, that’s enough about my breakfast…what we have here, ladies and gentleman…is a door…but no ordinary door. This reminds me of a door and a composition I once saw at Exbury Gardens in Hampshire…wonderful gardens, designed by Capability Brown, featuring its own Steam Railway. Very popular during the summer months with elderly people which gives the air a faint aroma of stale urine.

Great composition…great textures…should have more votes. But hasn’t.

Ah…elderly people…they have all the answers…its just that no one asks them the questions anymore.

Eileen - 'Framed' . . . Charming, delightful and a joy to behold…but that’s enough about your esteemed reviewer. This is a charming study of a charming item, very subtle too. As usual from Eileen, a little grace and elegance

And I’m glad to see my flowers finally arrived.

tugmistress - 'Trawl Doors'  I like this, I took a few similar ones over in Killybegs a couple of weeks back for the Texture Comp. nice study, just a slight shame that the pier obstructs the view. Though they’re usually backed right up. Good idea, another shot with a lot of potential.

Adrian-A - 'Beach hut Door at Broadsands Devon'  good effort, I think it might be bolder shot face on showing the detail of the number and the padlock. The angle doesn’t work for me here. Plenty of potential though.

mirrorimage - 'KEEPERS COTTAGE'  a lovely rustic bit of erm…stuff. The subject is great, a fantastic old letterbox. The shot, I don’t think does it justice, too many mid-tones for me. Good composition though.

Kate1308 - 'Village Doors' …doors and more doors…has the feel of those Irish Tourist Board posters featuring …”Doors of Ireland”…there’s probably one in  a themed bar near YOU somewhere. Loads of colour, loads of detail, loads to look at. Whats not to like here…great work Kate, I can tell a lot of care and attention went into this

ps…don’t forget my invite for your birthday party next month.

bodsao - 'Doors' …Was it raining down your way…that’s why U never got further than lying on your back on your patio looking up at your patio doors this weekend? Good capture though…what you lack in motivation to leave the house, you more than make up for with a nice clean crisp detailed image…shot with one of them there contemporary jaunty angles. Fab. Also…from the internal framing, I would say these were Anglian windows…the little black bobbles in the seal are their trademark…(hey, I thought everyone knew that) though its hard to see from this angle.

Making the most of whats at your disposal…a lesson for us all. Good effort.

GUY1970 - 'Square Door'  this is well spotted, a superb door, a wonderful bit of antiquarian ironmongery. The pic doesn’t quite do it justice, I’m not sure why, maybe it needs more texture, shooting from a lower angle / face on, showing a little more of the beautiful stonework…I really don’t know and feel quite bad that I can’t be more helpful…this has potential.

On the other hand I feel quite good that cutting silage today has been postponed due to the p*ssing rain, hurrah. Lets hear it for p*ssing rain.

Guy Roberts - 'That great big door in the sky' ah. Good morning…Rene Maigreetings to you….hahaha. super image. I can’t believe this has a total so far of “ABSOLUTELY NO VOTES WHATSOEVER - - - NOT EVEN ANY”. It’s a corking bit of work, well done Guy.

    Bob Dylan…knocking on Heavens door…

Course you all know Bob Dylan…the poor mans Donovan.

Steve12 - 'The Garage Door' …not much to say really Love this……My kind of shot, I really like this sort of stuff , old, musty and ageing, a sense of decay and neglect, but with texture and a hidden beauty for those that care to look closer.

Great effort in my book. There’s probably an old BSA Bantam hidden in there, or a Hillman Husky.

ogga lily - 'Dozing After The Dynamo'  is the long distance bike-riding part of an anger management programme…its just that its now two weeks in a row where your children have been spared danger and imperilment for your competition entry…very good. Keep it up. I know you wuz knackered after the ride, well done…so this is more about the riders than a study of the door itself…though I like the angle whereby they are asleep outside and the door is padlocked, as if the two could be somehow related.

    Nice, whether intentional or not.

ABERS - 'Garden Shed Door'  super rustic tones in this …ace composition as usual. I kinda like the slight “painterly” effect too. The perfect place to while away an afternoon drinking tea and smoking me pipe, before attending to my compost and cloches. Lovely image. Another of this weeks entries that I think may be shot better if it was a little more “face-on”…could just be another phase in the life of shelf though.

DLS1 - 'Doorway' whoops…great texture in this shot and a great idea too, just falls a little short at the high hurdle of critical acclaim…its not sure what it wants to be…its not a picture of a big strong wall…or a shot of a big strong imposing castle door…its sort of lost somewhere in between I think….again, another entry with a lot of potential I think…just, not quite there. Close, but no cigar.

John Cooper-Clarke, Limbo baby, Limbo…it’s a DOORway in the rain.

Be4ch - 'Toilet' …Looks as cosy a cottage as I’ve ever visited, er, I mean seen for a while. It looks a little small to accommodate a man, woman, mother, incontinent child and disabled person all at once but it could be quite some party…though less extravagant and funky than Kate’s, to which my invite should be arriving shortly.

Nice effort indeed…\You caught the textures and contrasting materials really well, though the door / wall frame being out of shot spoils it a bit for me.

jimcq - 'The Tomb' aaaaargh…what is it this week with “NEARLY BUT NOT QUITE” sorry jim…the concentric squares drawing the eye in are superb. More so than most this week, this, for me has all the makings of a superb piece. It just lacks contrast for me and the colour is , I dunno how to describe it, not quite there. But there’s a really bold strong image here trying to bust out. Maybe concentrate more on the lines of the squares rather than the whole room?

David Bracher - 'Open space doors HAL ! or 'The red sock' …ah science fiction…love it…2001, a Door Odyssey….what about “Star Doors” … oozing socks appeal, this one…In space, no one can hear your door…

Ah, David Bracher, man of mystery and contrast…one minute he’s driving an Aston Martin, the next minute he’s a James Bond lookalike,

Later, he is seen lurking menacingly in a monochrome shadow…

then he’s got a gun to his head and blowing his brains out in a gesture of defiance to an uncaring world…

And then…well, he’s drying his socks.

It’s kinda humbling folks, don’t you find.

    (oh yes. Terrific image btw)

veggiesosage - 'Castle Doors' …my door my door, my Kingdom for a door. And SPANDREL…great word, something to do with the space beneath an arch. The Spandrel in this shot seems to be an empty space rather than filled with a curvy bit of actual door so I’m lobbying to have this removed on the grounds that its a gate masquerading as a door.

Having said that, the strong colour, irresistible texture and great perspective necessitated it getting my vote this week…I love it. (ah, 10-20mm?..funky lens) Shame that I have to pursue its banishment. Hahaha.

JKVision - untitled . hmm, I shoulda used a template…this has wonderful potential, can I get a prize for the most overused use of an over used word in this weeks review.

I like the composition and the grittiness of the dirty walls, the bare floor and the lines of the radiator…it almost works superbly but the lack of contrast and texture lets it down badly  for me. It looks a bit blurry and unfocused, though its possibly my monitor.

DuckPrints by Rebecca - 'Red Door' …Wow…how funky and retro is this?  in a sort of Chrome and cosseted shiny kind of way. That’s a gorgeous bit of chrome that has been attended to with love and respectful wonderment…Cool, colourful and very funky.

I think a nice close-up detail shot of just the handle and window lever would make a great shot too…great stuff.

moonlustie - 'Bath House' ah, bath, I had one of them once. Another shot that could be bigger and bolder, potentially a bit better. I guess the light didn’t help you, a bit gloomy. Using the “warp- correction” to level the bottom step with the top of the door might add to the strength of the composition.

OldBoy - 'The Golden Doors' here we go again…hahaha. This is one beautiful door for sure Oldboy. The oldest Masonic temple in town…are you a member.

Again, I’d prefer a more direct face-on shot to emphasise some of the essential doorness of the door in question…and again, maybe some correction to align the horizontals and verticals would bring out the strength and character…could just be me craving a little symmetry though…its not as if I’m some self appointed door expert or anything. Great subject matter here, for sure.

Tringle WP - 'Wine Museum Door'  Well, I always like to save the best til’ last…but this week it’s Howard instead…. Phnaar phnaar.…wine museum?…did you mistake it for the off-license then? Then wondered why it was thirty five thousand euro for the Chateau Neuf? Good grain and detail and a great door again. Would it be better with the whole door in the shot?…Only Smarties have the answer.

Is the light just a little harsh…dunno, is Salman Rushdie ex-directory. Did Jackie Kennedy have a black dress in her wardrobe?

Thanks Shelfy me ol mate, I don't like it either I was toiling for inspiration this week, did you see my first endevour the windmill door, its still in my gallery I should have stuck with that but thought it was a bit far outside the brief. When I saw Kates I thought " now that's what I really had in mind" Smile [:)], great Smith's think alike.
