Little effort of mine from today

Ooo I like that....I'm adding to my knowledgebase all the time. It's starting to look like "if you can't get to the beach then include wood in the picture because it looks lovely - especially if it's curved"

Sonic - I reckon that pushing the luminance slider to far to the right causes a lot of haloing - maybe wind it back a bit. You'll probably want to nudge the gamma right to compensate but this can make the mid tones a bit muddy....

Anyway, today's piece of learning was that stone can sometimes look almost as good as wood....

That's a nice effect on the stone JR, the flags have a good look to them as well.

You'll always want to get some texture into a HDR shot, as it really comes to life during processing.
The tones come out beautifully.
Also, woodgrain comes out amazingly when processed properly, I had a go with that the other day.


p.s. I got that pano made up into a 10x30". Its come out gorgeous.

p.s.s. Jonathan, I got a print made upto 24x16", and it looks better then my normal 15x10... so I think I'll try even bigger

For what its worth I think I prefer the first.

The foreground in the colour version seems a little washed out for me. But I'm far from being an expert!

I think this one is much better - all the interest is in the composition and tones and the bw effect makes the most of them. Great pic!

Just shows how people see different things. I'm a great lover of B/W but this colour version is better to me. The b/w seems to be roughly done...clouds with burn't out whites etc. A little more control of the conversion and some dodge and burning and I'd go with the b/w....but as is I like the colour version here. Subtle tones and hues and nice detail through hdr. Maybe a bit of dodging to bring the light back into the horizon would help though.

Still not sure on it, I like the contrast of the bw one, but the detail of the colour.

 

Anyhow, I went out for a bit today after college, though the clouds decided to go before I got to my location.

Hi all,

I placed this question in the how to editing, but realised that actually I'd be better asking it hear as your all doing this regularly.

I'm having a go for the first time at HDR. I'm following a set of instructions from the website Stuck In Customs. I've found that I do not know how to import files as layers. He says to import 3 images to make 3 layers - the HDR made with Photomatix as the top layer, the darkest as the middle layer, and the middle exposure as the bottom layer.

I have no idea how to open the three as layers... HELP!

EDIT:
I worked it out using duplicate layers I was able to transfer all three into one image as different layers.

I keep noticing, that hdr seems to greatly increase Chrom abs. Has anyone else noticed this? or is it just me and my kit/technique.

HDR works with the Luminescence data from the files, not the colour. CA and flare is just light, so luminescence.
Most lenses have a wee bit of CA, so when you run it though HDR, it magnifies it, like noise, and flare.
Are you using a kit lens?

Best thing to do is just tone it down when tonemapping, leave it a bit blander, then do the contrast adjustments in Photoshop.
Easier to handle that way.
