    Re: Automotive Photography

I've just spent the last 30 mins browsing this thread and your site Tim. Truely inpirational photography, especially for an aspiring automotive photographer like myself. I must speak to you regarding your work etc at some point.

So, this is my first post and I should therefore introduce myself. My name is Dean, I have a very keen interest in automotive photography and I hope to soon make more of a career out of it. Currently I juggle my photography work around a full time IT job, which isn't ideal but I try and make the most of it. I have a number of clients, the latest being a supercar club based in Hampshire called 'Club Velocita', it has been immense fun shooting for this club.

Here are a couple of examples of my latest work, not all of them brilliant..

There are plenty more on my flickr, and also on my website. Any feedback, be it good, or bad is welcomed.

    Hi Dean.

    They're AWESOME!

The Lambo and 430 images - in motion - are simply outstanding and brilliantly done!

Will look forward to browsing through the rest of your stuff on Flickr.

    Cheers,
    Neil

    Re: Automotive Photography

Tim asked for a side lit shot so thought i would do some practicing, purely studio lighting for a change as i'm trying to get the hang of using them, I have found it more difficult than i thought to try and control stobe lights and this is the nearest i've got to a satisfying result, a second light to the left of the bike as a highlight. Both lights had large soft boxes fitted. Constructive criticism on the lighting welcomed

This second pic is back to good 'ol daylight, by chance the early morning sun in the right place with the door partially open high lighting the front of the bike.

1an, great work mate and glad you gave it a go, looks well.

Here's some shots from the first of my seminars for Jaguar UK for anybody thats interested, the whole day went well and apart from some early power issues it was a huge sucess and Jaguar, Hassleblad and Nikon where all more than happy so a good result all round.

Hi 1an, yes I hope so, Jag are really impressed with what we've done so far, especially as its an industry first and not been done by a manifacturer before, we are looking at another series in Liverpool hopefully but this time outside with car rigs and the enviroment. Shooting will most likely be blad and nikon again.

    I'll keep you posted.

    Re: Automotive Photography

Great images as usual Tim.  Many very cool images in this thread.  Well, this will be my last post in this one...seems girls apparently can't like or take car pics.  Every time I post one I get no response...but then again, perhaps no one likes them...that could be it too!  So...I've self-published some of my abstract-like classic car photos through www.blurb.com.

    Have fun guys!

    Re: Automotive Photography

    Tim.

    Brilliant Jag night time shot!

    Rebecca.

Sorry to hear about your disappointment and lack of response from the forum.

Personally, I don't remember seeing many of your images previously posted, so visited your gallery - especially At The Car Show.

I'm still relatively new to this, so may know nothing, but I  thought there were some brilliant compositions, brilliant use of colours and I noticed they all worked even better together as a collection because you could see a style then running through them. Personally I'm not an American car lover - especially their classics - but thought you picked out and identified the best features for each to create some superb abstract images - my favourite is the E-type though; rear corner with taillight partially cropped and long chrome bumper.

I suppose there are just as many differing tastes in automotive images\style as there are photography subjects? Maybe yours aren't "connecting" with the majority of viewers in this forum - the majority of postings appear to be modern sports or super cars captured in a way that may appeal more readily to "blokes"? Possibly these come from the direction that first and foremost the car is "tasty or desirable", then it's captured with photography skill? Whereas your images, IMHO, appear to come from the opposite direction - brilliant photography skills, understanding of colour and composition etc - first and foremost - then it's applied to a car?

It may seem daft, but could it be the case that your images are not appealing in a strict "automotive" way, but in their undoubted skilled use of colour and form instead? Then again, maybe I'm talking rubbish?

Anyway, I'd certainly like to attain your photography skills - you clearly have them!

    Cheers,
    Neil
