forgot the iso was set really high for the previous work, really bad lighting, even worse dof. no wonder it scored nil ,lol. cheers martyn

nice shot, the dof is perfect, i felt the blue thing in the BG was distracting from the bright ball and tee, my mind and eyes kept wandering to the BG trying to work out what it was. i think a white ball, yellow tee, green grass and red writing is enough colour ,the blurred blue just distracts from an otherwise suberb shot. cheers martyn

    Here's mine for this week

    cards.jpg

i dont know what to say about this pic steve, i think a tighter crop may have helped, the focus is good, the picture is well thought out, i am dying to know what the card is . the copyright is a little distracting on a white against black (use transparency to make it less conspicuous),the only thing i can come up with to improve it is that the BG should be green instead of black, cheers martyn

Here's my entry for this week

    Games

    Good luck all

nice composition, love the way the board jutts out in the middle, my only (small) gripes are the bright light in top left corner is distracting, the black background players are too in focus and the dead king is too centred (if it was a little to the right it wouldnt take your eyes off the screen), i know it sounds alot but it isnt, the good points are black and white abstract, light point of interest (and in focus) ,good use of light and shadows.thanks martyn

    My entry this weekend

    Super Cup Football

nice colourful pic kev, it just doesnt quite work for me tho, the centre of attention is in focus but i feel  you should have use the rule of thirds on this pic, stepping back a little would have put the 2 blue players on the outer thirds line and then positioned the red goalie to take centre stage, your leading lines are great, nothing is pushing you out of the picture but the blue players are too near the edges for a good balance. as far as storytelling goes i would have liked to see the ball away from the keeper slightly, it would suggest  "anybodies ball"  and the viewer can make up their own mind who wins/saves/scores etc. cheers martyn

Here's my entry for this weekend's - Elbow in the back. Good luck everyone.

great action pic, everything except number 9 is in focus, but it leaves  you to hunt round the picture for the story, in my view a close crop of the 3 players (and the ball) would have been superb. it would make you feel like your part of it instead of a bystander on the touchline.even getting rid of the empty spaces at both sides would make a big difference, never be afraid to crop if it adds to the drama. cheers martyn

Here's mine, bit of a struggle to think up what to do this time round

its a nice picture , my only problem would be that the blue chips are falling off the edge and the composition is a little jumbled, you have the technical ability but you need more vision. i would read some info on composition techniques,  you should lead a viewer into your picture , allow them to browse around (always heading for your centre of attention) but never allow their eyes to wander of the page. cheers martyn

well this has got to be one of the best pictures so far, bang on with the rule of thirds, there is nothing to take your eyes out of the picture, curves and colours are good, i would have liked to see more dart tip showing and maybe part of a flight (only because some people might not recognise the picture) .cheers maryn

    My entry

    racing on loch ard

Not as good as the entries so far, but we all need to start somewhere!

your right we all need to start somewhere. its a pleasing picture but everything is spaced so far apart, try a tight crop on just the 3 boats on the rhs(use the rule of thirds and place the 2 outer boats on those lines)  watercraft are a great photo opportunity , always take them sailing into the picture rather than out of the picture, reflections are great always keep them in the shot. cheers martyn

ok then, Im ready to enter my 1st comp, Been watching for few weeks now and Im starting to think creatively, Been ill in bed all weekend and time is running out, here is my effort......

nothing much to add to this photo, colourful and well taken, personally i would have cropped so that the outside edge of the box is not visible or moved the camera to left slightly  but thats just me. cheers martyn

    elusive:

My first attempt in the competition. I used my new compact and I am new to how it works. I don't think there was enough light in the room and I didn't want to use the flash because it gave too many shadows. I wasn't going to enter but I spent a couple of hours trying! So hope you don't think it's that bad.

its a great effort , there is just too much going on , sometimes a little can mean a lot, even the 3 dice strategically placed could make a great photo, glad you decided against the flash, cheers martyn

Great shots everyone, this was all i could think of with about 5 minutes to go before midnight, (been away this weekend) that hadn't been done before. Luckily i had remembered to put my clock backSmile [:)]

Heres mine, called "whats the score?"

Nikon D50, ISO 1600, 1/25 @f5.6, Flash Fired, Aperture Priority Mode, slight contrast boost in Photofiltre to get over the bleaching casued by High ISO and flash.

    Good luck everybody

    Rob.

hi rob as soon as i saw this pic i though why didnt i think of that, i just wish you had angled it so that the words ran top left to bottom right, and if you had added some  letters to spell out a few chosen words then i think it would have won hands down (in my opinion anyway), nice colours. cheers martyn

Feel I have to answer to namadr here. You have panned almost every persons picture this week in great detail even going so far as to add the pictures with your comments. Why do you feel this necessary? This competition started out as a weekend fun thing, and then you come along!!

You say my shot is not good, well that coming from the person who submitted possibly the worst shot is rich!!. You have a digital camera in your hands so it is possible to actually look at the picture before you submit. Before I forget don't think the photo needed post editing.

Re: Weekend competition - 28th-29th October - The best Photographer in the World

    Hi TT.

While Nomadr was fairly blunt in his criticism of the photos, he did offer constructive criticism - giving the submitter something to think about and learn from. I wouldn't say that he'd panned the shots. He also admited in his original post that the short time period of the competition: knowing the topic on friday and then planning/taking the shot in just 2 days, while fitting in a non-photographic life around the activity makes it a real challenge - in my case, the family precluded the necessary combination to participate: simulataneous time and energy Sad [:(].

I agree this competition should be a fun activity, otherwise few would join in. For me, it's a learning experience and chance to think outside of my normal subject matter and attempt subjects I normally wouldn't think of. It also gives me an excuse to extract a bit more time for photography from the rigours of the weekend schedule.

I do like nomadr's idea of a monthly re-vote (not revolt!) on the winners from the previous weeks. Shall I set up a poll with the winning shots from October? Anyone interested?
