That reminds me I must try to get to one of the local steam rallies again - great subjects for photography. Nice quality.

Looks like a youngster demanding food - I find black birds much harder to get than white ones.

    Re: Olympus Users

Hi all, I have posted in a different thread but was recommended to ask here instead.

I'll introduce myself as an E-1 user, and have been since turning digital in January of this year.

I read in this months mag Olympus are going to be introducing a 70-300mm (with Macro) lens to their 4/3rds line-up.  Personally this lense is just what I'm after (I think) so I'll be waiting to get my hands on one to try but would like to hear any recommendations for a similar lense from anyone else using the 4/3rds system.

I'm hoping to improve my wildlife photography, not an area that I have explored much but something that I seem to be taking a lot more of lately.  Perhpas because I have turned digital, I can snap away at geese and swans all day and don't have to worry about the cost of my slow focusing or poor panning technique (which is improving each visit to the lake).

I did read the letter regarding the investment in 4/3rds lenses and it did get me thinking for a while.  Do I stick with the Oly and my two lenses or do I wait and change to a different manufacturer (I fancy the look of the Fuji S5 or SD14)?  Then I went and bought a 35mm Macro lense.  And now I'm considering the 70-300 when released so I guess that I'm stuck with it (that's a good thing).  My reasons for choosing the E-1 were the weather sealing, dust removal and robustness, and the compact lenses suit my usual photography (travel).

Cheers all, I'll keep popping in for some friendly Olympus chat.

PS I agree that you shouldn't have to defend your camera choice, it's the images that are important and even though my camera is "only" 5.1mp I'm VERY happy with it, and I was a digital skeptic!

    Re: Olympus Users

I'm waiting to see what the 70-300mm is like. Rumours seem to suggest it's based on the sigma APO lens which I've used and found to be pretty good. I use the 50-200mm f2.8/3.5 for birds - sharp but slow to focus. Having used a number of cameras and lenses I've personally found using a quality lens of a shorter length and cropping the results is often better than using a longer but less quality one. The 135-400mm Sigma is a good long lens but the 2x of the 4/3 system might make the 270mm at the short end a bit restrictive at times. I used a 135-400 on my Nikons and on occasion i did manage tro cut the heads off swans flying overhead! I've used an E-1 and agree it's a great camera. The Fuji S5 is perhaps the only current other make camera I fancy - having used an S3Pro - but I think the new Olympus models should ensure a bigger market share and hopefully the more users the more we're likely to get a good supply of 3rd party lenses - Sigma 100-300mm f4 would be nice.

Some time ago, when someone asked about the post rankings that used to be shown under the avatars, I checked the membership by number of posts and I was number one poster by about 3,000 posts. Your fingers must be working nineteen to the dozen! My posts have fallen to a very few now as I'm sticking to Olympus topics and the old codgers chat on the minolta 7i thread - a combination of boredom and avoiding the deadly serious lack of humour that tends to invade at times - who needs confrontation, I can get that elsewhere!

Hi Sue, i never really counted mine till you pointed out how many, i just tend to go on all sorts of galleries and post replies to shots i like, but have never really had a big input to the forums, as i consider myself not knowing enough about this fine hobby to join in as it were, but i'm very interested in the Olympus forum as this is what ive been using for a while now, so the info on them is quite good and great place for tips etc, so as i see now, most of my posts are of shots in galleries, maybe i should join in a bit more..? but i just like browsing the site for new shots etc. but still keeping my eye on the forums..lol. from now on, anyway..lol. Cheers Donny

Let's hope they're right about the price [unfortunately circumstances mean it's still too much for me]. It's got to be in the same sort of price range as the D200, Fuji S5 etc to stand any chance. Street price would drop to around 850.00/900.00 before too long - affordable for 'upgraders' and competitive for the enthisiast/semi pro market. I bet at that price it won't have quite the classic feel of the E-1.

JPEG v RAW - no, not the usual debate! But specifically in relation to Olympus cameras, do you always use one or the other? One thing I like about the Olympus range is the ability to get good JPEGs and, apart from a couple of months using a Canon 30D, I've just never got into RAW and processing - just tweaking JPEGs in PSP. So, if you prefer shooting RAW files, what's the best software you've found for Olympus?

    Hi folks.
I haven't been about for a while. Thought I'd pop in and woohoo....we have some Olympians!
Thought you might be interested in this on the new 'E-3', or whatever it's going to be called.... http://www.olympus-esystem.com/dea/special/passion/episode6_02.html
The last I heard was a date of 17 October for release, but I can;t vouch for the accuracy.
Incidentally, I have the Sigma 135-400mm so if anyone wants to know anything just ask away.

    Best wishes

    Mike
