    Re: Nikon D300 Users

I've just finished reading it and though useful and I'm glad I got the magazine I won't be buying any more. It did explane a few things I was unsure about so well done them.

Regarding the mag I dont think the DCM team have anything to worry about, I used to get this publication years ago and all thats changed are the pictures and prices. There was no DVD with PS tutorials and more pages of small ads than I cared to carry home with me.

PS, I'm experimenting with the D300s low ISO settings, for macro work low noise is very important and using the lowest setting is producing great images ( noise wise) I've a froglet in my galery that shows how good the sensor is, I've posted quite a big image so you can see for yourself. I'd appreciate any macro tips for D300 setting anyone has.

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

I read the article in AP magazine and while it was of some help my overall feeling is one of disappiontment. I was hoping for and expecting more than the 5 pages in the mag. I don't think the article really went much fiurther than the instruction manual.

Has anyone used the Magic Lantern guides? Is that any good for the D300?

    Cheers

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

Must say I was a bit disappointed with the article myself, sorry all.

Now, has anyone else noticed taht they can view their Nikon Raw files in windows folders as thumbnails?  I'm guessing this was something NX has popped in, but it was a nice surprise yesterday!  No longer need to open viewer software to flick through my images (unles they are from my olympus or pentax!).  Nice one Nikon Smile [:)]

    Hi Martin,

It (NX) will have added the RAW codec for Vista, most (if not all) of the major camera makers have their equivalent codecs available as a free download from their websites, Both Olympus and Pentax supply their codecs free, you simply download the file, run the exe and then re-boot. You should then be able to see all of your RAW's in Windows.

    Cheers, Peter.

    Nice one, thanks Peter!

I'm using XP but downloaded it anyway and it seems to have installed for the Olympus files Smile [:)]  (I don't actually have any Pentax Raw files, was having a blonde moment).  You learn something new everyday...but it's not always useful Stick out tongue [:P]

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

Actually, lets see if I can learn 2 things of use today Smile [:)]

When using NX I can view the camera details but cant actually alter them.  I set the white balance for indoor lighting but it's a touch too yellow.  I'm guessing that energy efficient light bulbs have thrown things awry and I should have left it on auto!

Anyway, the instructions say click on the triangle next to white balance in settings (I'm guessing tehse means camera settings) but there isn't one.  I am working on the RAW file.  I also can't alter the exposure, or any o the other in camera settings.  Help?

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

Ooh, one more tip also - try your lcd at +1 as I find this is giving far better results.  I know you shouldn't judge an image on the screen, and that's what the histogramme is for (hmm...) but at a glance, and for setting up flash lighting, I find this +1 to be giving pretty good representation.

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

And a tip from me too Martin. Wink [;)] The histogram that you see on the cameras LCD represents the embedded JPG thumbnail and is not a true representation of the full captured RAW data. This is one of the reasons why the principle of always 'shooting to the right' came into being.

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

Hi Alan, didn't know that you had swapped camps - the D300 just too tempting Stick out tongue [:P]

I know that and I can honestly say that I have never used the histogram, hence my (hmm..).  I don't use the LCD either much, having it switched off most of the time, but playing around with flash lighting I found it useful to use, especially for showing the spread of the light.  I prefer to trust my metering most of the time and find I usually get it right.

As you say, it's only the cameras interpretation of the scene which is often different to mine.  I've always liked to underexpose my images slightly, working towards the dark side.  That's the mood that I like.  I know, I know, with digital meter for the highlights blah, blah.  Fine if you want an evenly exposed image (which sometimes is needed).  But it would be a boring world if we all strived for that "smooth mountain in the middle" look!

I haven't used teh magic lantern guide but can highly recommend Thom Hogans guide.  It is fantastic, the only downside is it's an E-book and I'd rather have a printed book, but the whole package is about 900 pages so would have cost a lot more!  Seriously, buy it, it explains everything in the manual and more, giving you plenty of information, his personal preferences, and his reasons for those.  There's also some workflow videos and bits on the CD.

Hi, can anyone recommend a good user guide for the D300?

Has anyone found a particular one to be useful?

    Cheers

Live view mode - press the playback button and then move the red box around the scene, it will show you what the scene would look like metered from a different spot.  Cool Smile [:)]
