This 'weekend' competition must be a first for here - a photo contest where no-one moans about the result!Wink [;)]

Congratulations lurkalot, excellent competition, some inspiring shots.

The competition is so good because you are being judged by fellow photographers and the prize is recognition of your art. the surprising thing is so many good shots received no votes probably because you are only allowed one.

Is there a voting system for 1st 2nd 3rd ?or would that just be too complicated.

    Looking forward to the weekend.

Well done Lurkalot ( and all others too!) - a really enjoyable and challanging contest - much better than the Magazine ones where for us learners it sometimes feels futile.

No votes for me - but at least I have learnt something! Roll on the next one.

Lurkalot, How did you focus for the drops?

    Thanks for the comments.

I posted my how too on the previous page, but here it is again. Wink [;)]

    Lurkalot:

Here's how my shot was done

Well this shot was done in a real hurry, and not a lot of thought went into it, I was late for work Embarrassed [:$]

    Setup as follows

1: Canon 30D with Tamron SP 90mm macro lens
2: Glass of water standing on (empty) beer can in kitchen sink.  Frying pan behind to provide background lol... Embarrassed [:$]
3: Turned on tap to a slow trickle, and fired a few shots hand held.   Onboard flash was used, and manual focus.

Shot from about 5" and cropped the shot.  Lens stayed dry. Wink [;)]

    Sorry Lurkalot, expressed myself badly!

What I meant to ask was did you focus on the stream of water using the viewfinder or did you measure the distance and set on the lens.

    Jack, no problem.

I just used the viewfinder to roughly focus (Manual focus), and moved the camera back and forth, until I got a in focus beep. Then took the shot.   Pot luck really. Wink [;)]   I guess it would have been easier on a tripod though.

    Lurkalot,

Have you been selling your votes off on e-bay or similar, last night when I looked you had 19, now your only showing 16, I could understand how the counter is still going up, but not down.

What's the going rate in any case as I need at least 1 for this week-end, as long as its not too expensive. lol

Yup, congratulations LaL! Well done, your's was my wife's favourite shot (she even thought it was better than mine!).

I was personally quite amazed at the quality and quantity of the shots presented. I had great difficulty in deciding which to vote for.

    Lurkalot:
The subject for this weekend has to be posted by 21:00 British time (BST currently), 22:00 CET, 20:00 GMT on FRIDAY. It's nice, though if it can be posted earlier, to give those antipodians as much chance as the rest of us.

Good luck, this is the second subject I've chosen and am glad to not have to chose again. Some considerations, though:
    • don't make it too specific
    • don't pick something that requires specialist equipment, e.g. macro lens; if you can't take it with a standard kit zoom, it'll exclude some people.
    • think about the world-wide audience, don't want to exclude people because it's not autumn there Wink [;)], or those of us with no access to hills/mountains/general views.
    • could pick a technique, e.g. slow shutter speed/motion.
I think it's quite nice if everyone contributes ideas for the winner to consider, so how about posting some ideas?

    Thanks H,

Not until you have to decide do you realise how difficult this really is.   Now it's funny you should mention motion, that was going to be top of my list. (Might still be) Wink [;)]

    I'll get something posted ASAP.

PS, your wife can spot a good pic, when she See's one. Stick out tongue [:P] lol...

Re: Weekend Competition: The Best Photographer in the World 7th - 8th Oct, 2006

    Hi all,

Way back in the darker ages of September, when this whole competition kicked off, it was decided that the voting would end on the Wed. midnight (UK time), giving several days to get the voting in and a reasonable length of time for the winner to be notified and to come up with a new subject for the following weekend.

Unfortunately, this was not clearly stated in the original rules and its copies for following weekends, this is something that should be amended for the next competition [Lurkalot...I'll leave that as your task Smile [:)]).

The new polling system available in the forum permits us to specify a date after which the poll will close, making it much less ambiguous.

As we're still ironing out the wrinkles in the weekend competition, please bear with us.

Another wrinkle that was identified: what do we do when we have a draw (tie)? Suggestions to this thread, please.

    Ta.
