    hevans:
    Hi TT.

While Nomadr was fairly blunt in his criticism of the photos, he did offer constructive criticism - giving the submitter something to think about and learn from. I wouldn't say that he'd panned the shots. He also admited in his original post that the short time period of the competition: knowing the topic on friday and then planning/taking the shot in just 2 days, while fitting in a non-photographic life around the activity makes it a real challenge - in my case, the family precluded the necessary combination to participate: simulataneous time and energy Sad [:(].

I agree this competition should be a fun activity, otherwise few would join in. For me, it's a learning experience and chance to think outside of my normal subject matter and attempt subjects I normally wouldn't think of. It also gives me an excuse to extract a bit more time for photography from the rigours of the weekend schedule.

I do like nomadr's idea of a monthly re-vote (not revolt!) on the winners from the previous weeks. Shall I set up a poll with the winning shots from October? Anyone interested?

    H.

I agree, Although Nomadr's reviews at first seem "picky" some of his comments make sense, I for one welcome any comments good or bad, it's how I learn. If I don't agree with them theres nothing lost but if I do then this can only improve my skill. Plus although this is for fun I like to see what others think and sometimes I find myself thinking the same as more experienced photographers which to me is a sign of my improvement.

    Allen

Don't judge me by my opinions, judge me by my photographs......there as bad as each other.

Re: Weekend competition - 28th-29th October - The best Photographer in the World

I've not got a lot of time at the moment to check the site I'm away at the moment and no internet access at night Sad [:(]  I am just glancing through when I get a chance.  I've not really fully understood how I can improve mine but I'll look at in more detail at the weekend. But I do agree that nomadr's comments were constructive.  I must admit that's the reason I put my attempt in.  I know its nowhere near the standard of the other shots but as I said we all start somewhere and I for one am very glad for any comments.

PS, for the record my favorites were the solitaire and golf shots!

Re: Weekend competition - 28th-29th October - The best Photographer in the World

I'd like to thank Nomadr for his comments. It's a tough thing to judge how to comment on a picture. Especially as people put photos on here for totally different reasons. Some people really do want constructive help and advise...others just want to be told 'Yes that's a great pic' whatever it's like. We have plenty of yes men/women here so the straight forward, tell it how it feels type stands out more. I found it quite a refreshing change. I'm not saying I agree with all of what he says but it's definitely food for thought.

I did wonder why 'when he doesn't agree with the winners' would he want them to be shown again and then one chosen from those? Personally this idea doesn't interest me....Orgies got enough awards.Big Smile [:D]...and I haven't won yet.Big Smile [:D]

Now...if you want blunt honesty. My favourites:

    1. MeWink [;)]...............please be cruel. I feel this is more about knowing your judges so please tell me what you didn't like about it. I've heard about the lack of movement in the club (I feel anymore blur and it would just disappear) which may be a good idea if it has distracting blue shadows. Is it just a dull idea...a golf ball, yawn! yawn! I'd love to know. Do you generally prefer shots with the human element in. I new I should have gone for the all female naked mud wrestling pit...but you try and find one in a weekend. Also I live in Wigan...they don't make wrestling pits that big.

    2. Ste Jones. Great colour. sharp and in focus. Personally I feel it didn't need the box. Just the pieces did it for me. Still you got my vote.....yup, however big headed I might sound I wont vote for myself.

    3. Kevip6. Good colour and a different idea. Eye catching.... A very small focal range that unfortunately I felt should have been on the head of the figure, not just his body. If you'd caught that I'd have voted for this one instead.

Keep the comments coming but try and keep it fun.

    Congratulations TT

Re: Weekend competition - 28th-29th October - The best Photographer in the World

TT - well done - these action shots can be tricky to catch.

On the comments front - both Orgie and Nomadr gave comments for which I am grateful - both from a different viewpoint - which is what is good in my view. It gives me ideas that i might not have though of that I can try in the future. I actually found having the picture attached to the comment easier to see what is meant - but if we all did it it would be a bit overpowering. I must make the effort to put some comments in myself.

On the competition - I am all for having a monthly Poll but am not so keen on the idea of a prize ( other than the title we already use). For me this comp is both a bit of fun and something to make me actually get out there and try something that i may not previuosly have done. making it a bit more serious may make it a less inviting to those of us who have a long way to go yet.

anyway - all the best to everyone for this weeks competition.

I like yours Dave, when I saw it I was sure that it was the one I would be voting for.  I loved the colours, they were bright and bold - the green of the grass, the yellow of the tee, the red lettering.  Images like this where the colours contrast each other just seem to do it for me.  I liekd the fact that the club was in the background as it gave the sense that the game was being played and not just photographed.  I didn't find it distracting.  The image was nice and sharp and, to my eye, was wonderfuly in-focus.  If one was to be a bit picky it seemed as if the highlights on the right hand side of the ball were blown and you had lost a little detail but with such a bright object to capture I imagine that something had to give somewhere.

As I said, I really thought that I was going to vote for you this week and then Richsarg34 posted his shot.  Sorry.

Thanks for the info guys. Just thought I'd add that the 'Golf' idea went against my grain too. I was given a set 10 years ago and I've never used it. Even that shot was done in the local park with the wife holding the bat, stick...whatever.

although i didnt enter this weeks comp, i voted for the golf ball as it seemed the most powerful shot, i dont agree with all nomadr said, but hats off to someone who will give honest feedback and not just, nice picture, or no comment. i believe the only way to improve is for people to tell you where you have gone wrong or where you could do better. if you want to look at my gallery and post any comments you think they deserve i would be grateful.

Methinks the lady doth protest too much. Probably out there with his Ping sun visor/hat, Lyle and Scott jumper, plus-fours, one glove and practising his approach shots as we speak. FORE!! Stick out tongue [:P]Big Smile [:D]

ok I'll hold my hand up and say perhaps I was a little harsh on the man, but he does have a camera that lets him delete bad pictures perhaps he should have pressed the button.

For me this weekly competition has been a steep learning curve, a couple of weeks ago I didn't have a clue how to convert to b/w, but because of this comp I do now:)

If it is to become so serious then less people will be joining in. At best it gets us out, using our brains and hopefully get good pictures.

No, Data Analyst - I have the misfortune to work with a lot of people (i.e. everyone but me) that play golf.  I did try a few years back but then my wife and I had our first child and spending 6 hours out on the golf course most weekends didn't seem practical Smile [:)]

Yup, I'm sure it's difficult to maintain concentration, a good swing and *** feed all at the same time.

I agree with both Jack2 statements, well done to TT for a good action shot.

I am also grateful for honest comments on my pics even if it's not complimentary. In fact i think constructive comments are more useful (if less enjoyable) then the good comments. Nomadr gave me a lot to think about that i wouldn't have even considered before, which is useful.  But then i guess there's a fine line between sugar coating a comment being overly blunt.

Monthly comps sound fun, i would definitely vote even if non of my pics ever make it into them Smile [:)]

Having said all that, please don't everyone go into my gallery and start ripping ALL my pics apart Wink [;)]
