Ok here goes. This one was taken on my honeymoon a couple of months ago. I like it, but no-one else seems to like it. :(

I like it a lotBig Smile [:D]!  It captures a moment and has a real 'sea' feeling, if you know what I mean. I suppose it has been passed by because it lacks contrast, but I think it is a great shot. Well done.

This photo was taken on xmas day of my friends open fire - i like it but im not sure it has much technical merit what do you think????

Toothie I like this a lot, the picture is nicely framed by the fireplace, the highlights are not clipped and it has a lot of detail. Well done!Big Smile [:D]

You are crafty indeed as this isn't on your gallery so I couldn't see it full size.Smile [:)] I would crop in from the left (sod rule of thirds) to get rid of the grass bottom left. Apart from that I think it's wonderful - the lighting is magic and the colours are rich.

All good and valid comments as are filters Smile [:)]

Guy this is as big as I would have posted it any way but I really do not like the way DCM compresses the original and they sometimes appear artifacted when veiwed because most people do not veiw the original, so I just post from my own personal gallery now and have stopped using DCM's Smile [:)]

Ok, adding my own. I really like this shot, but it has failed to elicit any response in my gallery - no comments, no star votes. I presume it is a tad too dark, or just needs something. It was taken on a very dark day handheld (left the tripod at home by accident) with a higher ISO than normal (bit of noise in the darker areas). How do I get rid of the noise, and generally give it more of a "WOW" factor?

Feel free to edit and post examples.

Great composition and light , now all it needs is a little lightroom work to bring out the potential..for your consideration bearing in mind I am working with a low res image.

How was it achieved but making a rough feathered selection around the foreground highlights and using a levels adjustment layer and then painting on the mask with a soft edged brush to fine tune it. Then reselct and reverse the selection and again levels adjustment layer and working on the layer mask to get a smooth transission between the tones. Then on the final image again a rough selection to the sky area and apply a gradiant adjustment layer to the selection change blend mode to soft light and alter the opacity tp suit. Finally used the shadow/highlight tool to fine tune it and apllied noise reduction (noise ninja) If it had been a full res image I would have applied it first but last works better on low res...a lot longer to write than to do. My intent was to make the tree more of a focal point and to enhance the feeling of recession in the mist I hope this helps and you like it..all done in Elements 5 and I have included the layers pallet to give you a visual idea of what was doneSmile [:)]

    Hi Crafty,

Many thanks for the very detailed tutorial! I'll have a further play and see what I can come up with based on your advice. I did shoot this in raw, so some preliminary noise reduction would probably help. My principle lesson from this, though: don't leave the tripod at home.

Re: post your pics for critique

Well I thought I should throw in my lot here too.  Back after the NY break, I have a lot to catch up on.  I resolved to comment on todays and possibly yesterdays shots only since otherwise i'd be here forever. - Only yours in that category Hugh.

I thought it was a good shot but like you found it too dark primarily around the edges - the trees etc.  I love the sky, and the grey tones are fantastic and there is movement in the water however Crafty's deft touch has brought that out so much more it has really made the picture - I wouldn't have known where to begin to do any of that.  So I would say well done on taking this lovely shot but blimey there are some folk who know what they are doing out there!  I need to study the tut.

This one is mine - taken on the beach in Kirkudbrightshire on a stormy New Year's Day.

JAStewart. I like the subtle tones of the background and the blurring. It's definatley got movement but it would have been better with the dogs head sharper/ clearer and with this type of panning shot it's best to leave space where the dog will be running into on the left. It helps your mind play out the rest of the movement. You could also try a bit of fill in flash to freeze the detail on the dog while still having the leg movement. Hope this helps.

yeah, i agree with David, you should leave some space for the dog to run into. It is a little to dark maybe a little play arround with the levels or something.

I would have to agree with everyone here. I just love this shot, really well taken shot.

You guys might have seen this shot before but i was just wondering if there is anymore to be added. I do realise that the shadow areas maybe to dark but it seems to be ok when i print it.

There's a lack of contrast in the photo. I'm also left a bit puzzled, when looking at the photo... what, or why.

    Hey

I have to agree with OldBoy there is a lack of detail, and it is begging for color, maybe in sepia it would give it a lot more oph because it could be a very good photo. deffinatly needs a decent sky shot.

Thanks David - I knew about the focus but understand the point about the space - would the flash reach that far to make a difference?  I have a Speedlite for my 20D but have to admit I haven't really got to grips with it but wouldn't have thought to put it on here.

I like the mood, the lack of clouds adds to the gloom, maybe a closer crop to exclude the bush and smaller boat, If you could of captured a clear reflection.
