cheers fizzio, much appreciated. spot on as usual.

I thought about removing the speckles from the wall with either a boost of curves or using magic wand. but then decided I kinda liked the texture, but I think UR right...and yes, that was 4 entries in your top three..

that could fan the flames for any conspiracy theorists.Smile [:)]

jeez Fiona, you're up early .

Hey Guys, just to add to shelfy's (a)musings.....Big Smile [:D]

GM0KDC - Good spot and a good interpretaton of the theme. The frame is a little too busy which takes the focus away from the flowers and I feel a little tidying of the scene would have allowed the flowers to stand out.  A combination of High ISO with a large aperature and fast shutter speed have introduced a lot of noise into the image as well. You did not realy need such a high shutter speed and so could have lowered the ISO to cut out the noise. I personally feel that a lower f stop would have created a more creative DOF.

Fizzio, now that you point out the problems they are obvious, I must say that for someone to take the time to do a review is great, but for the reviewer to take the time to look at settings is fantastic. I was being lazy and had auto ISO on, I will set the upper limit to 400 I think, again thanks for the feedback hopefully I will see these things myself soon.

Thanks for both reviews and quite chuffed for a first time entrant. Big Smile [:D]

The Sign is actually just up the road from where I live. It's at the crossroads of New Road, Broomhill Road, Lyndhurst Road and Forest Road in Landford village.

We as a village have just voted to keep all the surrounding signs in wood instead of the councils offereing to change them to the ugly standard metal ones Big Smile [:D]

shelfy, fizzio, thanks for the reviews - for mine, which were encouraging, but also for reviewing generally, which is a real help to learning how to take a better shot or process it afterwards (I know this has been said before, but it's true!)

I notice GM0KDC's comment about fizzio looking at the exif data - what do I need to do to ensure that gets uploaded with my images after they've been processed?

You need to make sure the data is preserved in the JPG that you upload to the site. Some imaging editors (Photoshop) strip this data out when "saving for web". Otherwise, if you upload an image straight from the camera it should be preserved in the image file.

Thanks for that - I'll experiment with different methods of saving it. I'm using Elements 5 and have used save for web as final export.

Re: CHAT for weekend competition 10/11 May 2008

"stevebedder - Great painting with light example and spot on - I wonder how many takes this took???  I agree with shelfy on the poor background - needed something a little more 'aesthetic' - again, no offence intended. Clever though and well executed."

Too be honest, the shot I entered was one of the first ones I took which I think was more luck than judgement.

I did spend quite a bit of time playing around 'painting' cars and people and things afterwards but decided to go with the 'light' version.

And I also agree with you and Shelfy about the background but was hoping to try and get some light from the planes flying over.......if they had been flying over at that time of the early hours! I thought it quite inconsiderate that planes stop flying in the early hours whilst I'm taking pictures in the garden. No offence taken btw.

At least I've got a few votes this week, thanks Big Smile [:D]

'Save for web' always strips the EXIF data - use 'save as' instead if you want to preseve the EXIF - you will still have as much control over the save options (well nearly). Also make sure that the 'original' image is the bottom layer if you are using layers on your image as I found that occasionally (why occasionally??) having something below this in the layer stack confused the hell out of photoshop.

The EXIF info is really useful to me when doing reviews, especially when I'm being the techy one whilst shelfy is being the arty-farty one, like good cop, bad cop I suppose?

jinky - unlikely I'll be entering this weekend as I'm at work all weekend - boooo. Please feel free to vote for me anywaySmile [:)]

Thanks for the vote Bob. I think it's the second vote I've ever got since entering!

Thanks also for the reviews by the two regular reviewers. I don't know how you both find the time. It's great to get constructive feedback, and hopefully try to put some of the suggestions into practice over coming weekends.

    fizzio:

Dave Cornwell - I hardly noticed the mono conversion on the right of the image and although this is well done, I don't personally feel that it adds to the image as the comp is not quite strong enough to demonstrate the stark contrast between an old shop (T-Mobile is not really retro!) and the spangly new.

Thanks for the comments. You're quite correct with your reference to T-Moble, I'll proably go back and reshoot this sometime as there are plenty of other 'old' shops to choose from to make it more of a contrast.

Congratulations to Jinky and TringleWP for a close fought battle! Both are excellent shots, but Jinky just nudges through with a win! Congratulations also to for afidler and stevebedder for a joint 3rd.

There was some very well developed imagination on offer for the voters this week.

Well done jinky - well deserved win. Once again there were lots of great shots this week; I particularly liked stevebedder's opening shot.

    So well done everyone.

Unfortunately I still have no internet connection - and after visits from two engineers and half a kilometer of replaced wiring I am not too optimistic about getting back on soon. So I may not be able to have a go at whatever challenge jinky comes up with.
