I suppose we really need to know what you want to take pictures of?

The answer will greatly affect what we could recommend.

Hi carlsr and welcome. Big Smile [:D]

Might be best to look at a top end compact or bridge camera. This would cost about £150 - £300, but you don't need extra lenses, as you would with a DSLR. So Canon Powershot G9 compact or Fujifilm's new FinePix S1000fd bridge camera might be best. Surprise [:O]

In which case Carl you'll be lugging around a lot of kit. A camera such as the Canon 5D would be ideal for Landscape plus of course the 17-40 wide angle lens to go with it. Oh, and don't forget an aray of filters such as Polarising, UV and Grads etc. For portraits the Fuji S5 believe comes in at highly rated......and so the list goes on. All tongue in cheek of course. Big Smile [:D]

In reality I'd take OB's advice and possibly consider the Canon G9 - an excellent camera that will also greatly reduce the weight you'll be lugging around. I took an earlier model, the G5 to Oz a few years back and couldn't have been more pleased with the results. Well I could but that would have meant a few less Barbies and a lot less of the Fosters. You  have had some great advise but if the limitations of a compact/bridge camera worry you then the E-510 twin lens kit can be picked up for not that much more than the G9 and fuji mentioned, £365 at photosense at the moment and only weighs 490 grams including the two lenses a great little traveling kit and a huge leap in image quality compared to a compact..just a alternative suggestion. Keep on snapping and catch the moment if you can.
