    Hi Moon.

I'm not that well up on Fuji camers. However, a friend had a top-end bridge one, model number escapes me, and he had same issues - sharp in viewfinder, but playback and downloads were outta focus. Appeared to be the camera in the end, and he ditched it. Not making any comment on whether his was a one-off issue or otherwise; I simply don't know.

Best thing, take a number of images; some close-up, mid distance and some landscape type. But do all these on a tripod with remote or timer release. If they're still soft, then must be the camera?

Mmmm... interesting  - I'm sure the auto-focus has deteriorated since I bought the camera - I thought it was just my poor skills and I was using that as an excuse - I'll try your suggestions during the week - thank you!

    Cheers

OK - I've done some test shots - your comments would be great (and anyone else's).  I put them in a journal page to make comparisons easier and not take up some much space here.

    Re: Photo of the Day

    Hi moonlustie

    Best tips;

    1. For close-up\macros - like Pooh. Always use a tripod to get sharp images! The very close distances involved gives minimal depth of field - that's in front of and behind the subject - in some cases measured in millimetres! On top of this any camera shake - up and down - is greatly exaggerated. You simply won't get anything sharp without one as the slightest camera movement registers blur! Also use remote shutter release as well; your finger pressing the camera shutter will cause enough movement to induce camera shake!

    2. If doing anything hand-held, ensure that your shutter speed is the same as the focal length that you are zooming to. i.e. if using 60mm, then 1/60th of a second minimum must be used! If 200mm then 250th of a sec or faster!

    3. For macro\close-ups, always use manual focus to focus on subject's eyes. Most auto-focus systems will struggle at these close distances and normally pic the wrong item to focus on if in some sort of inteligent mode!

Sorry if teaching to suck eggs?

    To your images.

The Pooh one you seem to have previously removed: His face and body are out of focus, buy the CE label is almost nice and sharp! You need to get his eyes as your area of focus. In this case, 'cos the label is sharp, camera shake is NOT the cause of blur, it's the area that your camera has selected to focus on! You should really be in manual mode for macros to keep control of it. If you were in manual, and you did focus on his eyes, then it's possible you have a camera fault?

The vase pictures seem to have good depth of field and focus - almost from front of room to rear.

The ISO Pooh tests: clearly as you increase ISO, they get sharper. As you're in aperture priority, your depth of focus is remaining constant - 'cos the aperture isn't changing, and neither are your focal lengths and subject distances. As you increase ISO in this AP mode, the camera will automatically increase your shutter speed to keep the same expouse - it'll get faster each time and that's progressively managing to overcome, what must in that case be - possible camera shake? Though if you were on a tripod this shouldn't be that much - unless you've been pressing the shutter release with your finger and not a cable release?

As you see with the highest ISOs, horrendous noise comes in! Simply don't go this high. Most people try to go no higher than ISO 400 and always 100 if possible.

    Hope this helps?

    Cheers,
    Neil

    Re: Photo of the Day

Neil, this is great, thank you so much - I need all the teaching I can get!

The original pooh was handheld but the others were taken the camera on a pile of books as I only have a monopod at the moment.  The camera doesn't have the facility to plug in a remote, so I was using continous shooting as I read if you took top 3 you would find the middle one would be the sharpest but obviously that still isn't steady enough.

Hadn't read nos 2 and 3 before, that's something to work on thanks.

Yes noise is my headache as the original intention of taking up more serious photography was to take pictures of a band I was following and taking pictures in pubs with no flash was a nightmare but managed to get a few good ones - and I obviously got the focussing on eyes right by accident in one of them.

    Cheers

moonlustie - You should have the option to take a timed photo with your camera, from 2 seconds to 10 seconds or more. Use this when taking photos indoors. Big Smile [:D]

Squeee! finally managed a sharp one!  Took it with less zoom and no macro (by accident) and I've cropped it - I used the timer and manual focus too.

Thank you and Neil so much for your help!

moonlustie - No problem with that photo. It's a sharp as a pin. Most lenses have a sweet-spot, and with your camera and fixed lens might work better without using the extreme ranges. Big Smile [:D]

    Re: Photo of the Day

As I use both an S9500 and an E900, might I add one extra comment on the focus issue? You probably have already thought of this, but try spot focus - it is just about the only focusing mode I ever use, no matter what the camera. Multizone focusing always some how manages to focus on something other than the thing I want it too Howard

    Re: Photo of the Day

    Hi moon.

    Pooh's looking much better :-)

Some good thinking there; you realised a wider shot - smaller focal length - would reduce camera shake and improve sharpness. Thing is, you've then had to crop the image and blow it up to get him to fill the frame - he looks that same size as previous pics? Enlarging images like this - and going too far - can in effect bring back some of the issues you were trying to avoid; by doing so you in effect sort of zoom into the image making any subtle focus issues and noise more obvious. Always best to get the image crop as close as possible - to what you eventually want - in camera.

If doing studio or still life subjects like this, you tend to do all you can to get as much light as possible onto the subject to help bring the shutter speed up higher to counter all the other settings. Things like placing your subject where bright daylight, through a window with a net curtain, can iluminate it, or a big bit of white card or silver reflector to bounce light back onto it.

Good work and keep practicing. No worries about the help; we're all leanring.

    Cheers,
    Neil
