Is this some sort of quiz? I mean - what is it, which rock did it crawl out from under - is it even a living thing? With a tighter zoom it would have fitted in well with the 'Moths' thread along with the other macro shots of evil looking things. Macro junkie, are you monitoring this thread? What's your take on it - ever spotted something like this whilst crawling around in the garden?

My friend described it as something from jurrassic park.

True...

 

Trying to get something similar with someone else. But I didnt have any lightstands on me, and the ones I employed kept on moving! (hence the murdered highlights)

 

The left moved for some reason to be too close, the one on the right moved the flash away from the subject. The only one that came out correctly exposed was the one I was holding!

I think that this is extremely good and remeniscent of a Norman Rockwell painting. You must have done more than just the lighting (and excuse my ignorance, but what is wrap lighting?)

The self portrait looks like it's had more than a touch of Lucis applied to it, or possibly image skill, or maybe even LCE and levels. I hope you're not getting yourself into too much hock for all this extra flash gear and software lol. Howard.

PS I would love to take part, but I've only got one flashgun and it's so old that the buttons on it have labels written in Latin . . .

Wrap lighting is where you have 3 or more light sources surrounding the subject (usually from a higher angle) to rim the edges and add specular highlights wherever possible. I want more flashguns so I can get even more highlights, but for the moment Im happy with 3.

 

The post processing is a mixture of selective high pass sharpening, and a small amount of dodging around the front (I underexposed the front light) followed by a highradius unsharp mask layer applying the "lighter colour" blend mode.

 

I've been toying it with a few months, and the post processing doesnt work whatsoever if the lighting isnt right! so Its a 70% capture 30% photoshop kind of technique.

 

As for the armpit comment, no I dont. When i was 13 hair started growing there, then it got bored. Dont ask me why..
