Weekend Competition: The Best Photographer in the World (8th-10th Sep 06)

Welcome one and all to the first of many weekend photo competitions.

Having been tasked to set the first subject of this most glorious competition, I've been thinking long and hard about what on god's green earth we could all find to photograph this weekend. Of paramount importance is that the subject be one that is readily accessible to us all, and yet still provide sufficient scope for us to let the creative juices flow. Jelly babies had been one thought, the moon another, but these have been covered in other threads.Other ideas included the daily routine, but BoltonDave is already ahead of the game on that one (but only by a close shave).

I'd considered many options, both tangible and intangible and come to the conclusion that this weeks subject is:

    (insert sound of drum roll......)

Your favourite subject, BUT you MUST include your camera in the shot in the most creative manner, without resorting to doing it in photoshop(*)!

So, if you like shooting mirrors, you're ahead of the game (but a tad boring). If you like macros of flowers, then you'll probably have to think long and hard about depth of field. If you like shooting the moon, then ... well... good luck. If you like landscapes, then...well...you're on your own. If you like animals, steer clear of rays, they can kill. If you like water, think reflections. I suppose the long and short of it is: you'll probably need to include something shiny in the photo! But remember: if the camera or lens isn't recognizable, then it doesn't qualify. The photographer need not be in the frame.

I hope this provides sufficient scope for creativity, while still providing for an interesting subject. Now go out and start reflecting on what to shoot!

And remember, comments and chatter goes into this thread. Only entries are to be included in this thread.

(*) please don't make us resort to asking for RAW files Smile [:)]

Re: Weekend Competition: The Best Photographer in the World (8th-10th Sep 06)

    RULES!

First of all, please do not chat in this thread. If you have any questions please email me at phil@spirituk.net. This thread is for photographs only.

Hopefully you have read the above message, this is what you need for the competition. These are your instrucions for the competition.

You must stick to the instructions. If your picture looks like it has not been taken by following rules and you win, you will be asked for a RAW original. The winner will be asked for a JPEG version of the file so we can check the time and date it was taken.

You have from Friday night/Saturday morning 00:00 until Sunday 23:59 to take your photo and post it up. Your photo must be on this site before Monday morning 00:00. No photo will be accepted if it is not on by this time.

At this time I will make a poll available as the last message on the thread. Anybody can vote, whether you have submitted a photo or not. You can only vote once as you polls remember IP addresses. You may also vote for yourself but I would hate to be the idiot that won off their own vote!

When the votes are counted I will ask the winner to supply me with a small original version so I can check the time and date on the properties. ALL SHOTS MUST BE TAKEN ON THAT WEEKEND FROM MIDNIGHT FRIDAY - MIDNIGHT SUNDAY. This makes it fair as the winner may have a good pic he took 2 years ago, making his life easy for the following weekend.

I will then officially post the Winners name. They must then add their Winning title "The Best Photographer in the World 8th-10th Sep 2006" (Weekend date you win) and start a new thread called:

Weekend Competition: The Best Photographer in the world (15th-17th Sep 06) and post your instructions. Your instructions can be anything, however easy or hard. Make your instructions fully clear.

Even though we may get all this done by Thurday 7pm, you can only start the comp in the given time. That makes it more interesting and fair.

I hope this is clear and I really hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend! Goodluck!

    Cedar

OK, I guess someone has to kick this thing off.  A tough task set by hevans - you must include your camera in the shot....mmmm.  Crap weather for photography all weekend where I am in Australia, and this is the best I could manage in between torrential rain:

Re: Weekend Competition: The Best Photographer in the World (8th-10th Sep 06)

Ok. I may have had a head start by setting the task for this weekend, but I can certainly say that I didn't think of this shot until lunchtime on Sunday (between assembling Ikea kitchen cabinets and tidying out the shed).

Taken today with the trusty old Coolpix 775 down the barrel of my Nikon F90. Unfortunately I haven't a macro lens for my glorious and lovely D70, so had to resort to the macro function of the Coolpix. I think it did a great job for "just" a point & shoot camera.

Oh yes, and so much for anti-reflective coatings! Wink [;)]

Picture taken of a bubble with the camera and lens in the background. Took me ages to make sure I was not in the shot! Hevans, class choice mate, had me thinking all weekend.

Just a thought, as there is a seperate poll page, why not let peeps comment on the photo's in this thread after the closing date, otherwise the original thread will get to be huge and it would be nice to have any feedback on the shots in the same thread as the shots ?

Thanks to everybody who took part in this weeks competition.

I did not take part, mainly because it was my birthday this week-end and not even my autofocus could compensate for by visual problems (Hick). (I did vote though)

I would however like to offer some advice on how to make this competition far more appealing to the photographic masses that are just waiting for a new challenge:

    1.    Make certain that Asia is mentioned at least twice in the header.

    2.   Make certain that Asia is mentioned as the subject matter.

    3.   Make it clear that any photo's taken from outside of Asia will not be elligable for judging.whatever the subject matter is.

This will then bring you into line with every other competition related to DCmag, don't forget to ignore photoshop cloning and other PS enhancements that render photography irrelevant, after all what has photography got to do with winning a photography competition anyway.

No offence to any Asians, Asia, or any part of ther world that considers itself Asian, I am merely attempting to have a pop at the DCmag judges, who never read the forums so I don't really know why I am bothering. I do hope I am sober by the week-end.
