Ok took this this morning really really on the hoof as the bus was coming down the road so it was very rushed just wondered what you all think though and I know it is not a brilliant shot from the technical point of view

This has the makings of a really interesting abstract, with the strong yellows in the water and in the leaves on the top right. Try to push the contrast a bit over the midranges using curves, and then burn in the green foliage a bit (limit to shadows). Then crop off most of the left side. If you don't mind (let me know if you do and I'll happily delete it), I've had a bit of a play and came up with the following:



As I said, it's got the makings of a really interesting abstract.

Vicky, the crop/composition is spot on, the B+W conversion really adds to the shot (for some reason in the colour version I'm drawn more to the dangling leg but not on the B+W), focus is spot on - a really good shot. The only improvement might be better eye contact, but these sorts of subjects tend not to be so cooperative.

That's a good sign that the photo is finished - time to print it off and hang it on the wall.

An art teacher of mine once commented that the difference between a child's drawing and an artist's drawing is the experience of knowing when to stop. A child will continue to add to the drawing (usually) and not know when to stop - an accomplished artist will know when additional mucking around won't improve the piece.

PS. It is a shot to be proud of...but I still don't like the selective colouring (personal preference) - the eye contact and expression alone are entirely sufficient.

I love photos like this, but I totally agree about the street sign in this photo as it is very distracting. I like the layout of the rest of this photo though.. It definately looks great in black and white too! Well done.

Hi,

In general I find the tones a bit flat. Some fill in on her face with a reflector would have helped some. I've played around a bit with the top shot (adjusted curves and burned in the graffitti to get a better contrast).  You can see the result here.

And in this one, some eye contact would really bring the emotions out. As before I played with the curves to bring up the contrast, dodged a bit  under the cheekbone to bring out the form of them and also over the background to deaccentuate it. Results are here.

Like the picture (though it is a little overexposed).  Would have been interesting to try this 5 paces to the right to see whether the overhanging branch adds a different perspective.
