Love it!  the sky is awesome - the clouds look like I could almost pick them up and eat them!

    Hi,

In general I find the tones a bit flat. Some fill in on her face with a reflector would have helped some. I've played around a bit with the top shot (adjusted curves and burned in the graffitti to get a better contrast).  You can see the result here.

Feedback appreciated (the whole shoot is visible in my gallery but here are just a couple)

    KTBW0003.jpg

And in this one, some eye contact would really bring the emotions out. As before I played with the curves to bring up the contrast, dodged a bit  under the cheekbone to bring out the form of them and also over the background to deaccentuate it. Results are here.

Agree about the flat tones on the first one.  The second link was dead when I tried it?!

Hear what your saying about the eye contact - guess I wanted it to be 'contemplative'.  Always nice to get other opinions though.

I mis-typed the URL for the 2nd, should be working now. I like the 2nd the most, and after the initial reaction think you've captured the contemplative aspect of the model.

PS. let me know if you want the versions I played with deleted - they're your photos after all Wink [;)]

Like the dodge on the background - it defintely improves the look and feel, but not sure about the cheekbones - but maybe that's because I know her and it doesn't look like her anymore!

Don't worry about the edits, I'm happy for them to sit there.

Thanks for taking the time to feed back.

    Hi Folks.

Comments on the below please, good or bad.

Like the picture (though it is a little overexposed).  Would have been interesting to try this 5 paces to the right to see whether the overhanging branch adds a different perspective.

Personally I think the sky and background is well overexposed - burning out both the blue of the sky and what was possibly a nice mountain in the background. If shot in RAW, try exposing twice in your RAW processing software, one underexposed, about 2-2.5 stops(?) for the sky and distant hills and another for the foreground at the current exposure; 0 stops. Then blend the two together in something like Photoshop.

A really nice and pleasing scene though :-) and the correctly exposed distant hills would have helped draw the eye from the top to the bottom nicely :-)

Don't know if you live near this view so you could take it again - if so you lucky person for living near such a beautiful area - if not another great example for shooting RAW.

Thanks for the comments appreciated. It was shot in raw but only just tried converting from raw using 4.1 and Elements, i will try your suggestion Neil. This is a spot i came across by luck about 60 miles from home, it was the changing leaves that drew me to it. Will re-post when converted.

Not posted for ages thought I'd give some feedback and post a pic!

Very much agree with Heavans conversion of the portrait shots they needed a little bit of punch adding a touch of contrast or burning achieved it really well and I think gave them a very modern look! Not bad shots all in all would've liked to have seen more poses tho!Smile [:)]

The little fella is very photogenic and you have captured his facial expression wonderfully. Where I think it falls down is that the light is from behind and this has left the shot a bit flat.

And why not? OK, the first has too much contrast between the water and the light house, but potentially is a great shot.

No 2 I like, it has tension and I can't see anything wrong with it.

No 3 is a nice comp but needs more colour and contrast.

This last one I really like but I agree with the previous comments that i'd like to see more vibrancy and contrast in the colours & shadows/highlights. For me at least, i'd like to see the tree standing out a bit more and less shadow in the corners.

As for my own, i'll submit this one

but i'd also be interested in comments on any of the 8 currently in the gallery. Regards this, the only thing i can think of myself is that I could maybe dodge the highlights on the waves lapping the bottom right shore, and perhaps if despite the overall haziness I could have brought out the far shoreline/horizon a bit more by masking it, that might have helped the overall composition a bit.

I only bought my first camera just over a month ago (fuji s9600) so tbh i'm still trying to work out how to use it let alone anything else so any general comments would also be welcomed. I do have a history of oil/watercolour painting and some basic photoshop (forum sigs etc) stuff hence some stuff seems to work, but i'm also a clanned gamer so I reckon my monitor probably needs recalibrating to something a bit more neutral than its current whacked up gamma and brightness Embarrassed [:$] Stick out tongue [:P]

Welcome to the forum. I like the desaturated look and the vignettes.

1 has wonderful water and colours but I agree the central cliffs are too dark for something that needs pushing to the distance. also all interest is in the right hand side. A better composition for me would be a bit closer to the rock at the front and have it in the bottom left corner.

2 This I like and I like the slight warm tones added too. My eye moves well through the shot up to the church and the clock.

3 I like this shot, good tones but I feel it just needs something else. Not sure what. It doesn't hold me in the shot after a glance at the tree. ( I am being very picky with this)Smile [:)] Maybe the tree isn't interesting enough to be the feature. So even though it's in a nice third it still doesn't hold the eye.

    Hi Ron.

No worries; still learning a lot of Photoshop stuff myself. Have seen through reading, and playing about myself, that such double processing and blending can work wonders and rescue some nice underlaying images like your example.

Watch out though, all can get a bit addictive and you can get dragged into spending hours, or even days, on your PC doing such post processing stuff ;-)

    Hi Simon.

Welcome to the forum, not been around long myself, either.

    Lighthouse shot. I really like,
though agree background and distant rocks are underexposed and let it down. Though looks like there are local areas that have been lightened. If the darker areas were bought up to the same level then would be much nicer. Also, I associate lighthouse's paintwork with being almost brilliant white. If you then put some drama in the clouds to contrast with the almost pure white lighthouse - well, I'd like it :-). Cropping out the tips of the rocks at the bottom might be more pleasing. A nice image and scene that I'd like to have taken and work from :-)

The church: this shot doesn't work for me, just a personal thing with the subject and me, not your image. The only church shots I like are when they're B&W, dark, imposing and real eerie.

The tree and the lock: I like, though would have preferred more contrast and drama in the clouds as opposed to the vignette - both, I think, won't work. And less foreground heather and more loch instead. Personally I think the desaturation is fine, just my opinion, and think it would work nice with the suggested darkened clouds. Again, a nice image that I'd be pleased to work from and the sort of scenes that I connect with :-).

    Cheers,
    Neil
