How do i get rid of the light streaks, is it an exposure thing or do i need a filter? It was only on a Fuji E550 point and shoot, but it will help when i start to use my new camera, cheer's.

Re: post your pics for critique

I for one am disappointed that this thread has slipped off the front page through lack of use. Feedback is a great way to improve and lots of the other threads now focus on showcasing shots rather than giving feedback so how about getting this started again?

Nomadr set this thread up as follows:

" the idea behind this thread  is to gain a better understanding of how other people percieve our pride and joy and how we can then learn from it and take better pictures,

    only 2 rules are

genuine constructive ciritiques (no bitchin just for the sake of it and no downright rudeness)

you cannot post a new picture until you have made a critique (1 critique equalls 1 new picture you can post)

and thats it, just remember that you can argue your case (if you think your pic is great then you justify your reasons, ) this is not a slagging off thread its a place where you can gain some real insight into better photography. have fun but above all tell the truth and dont be offended by crucial comments on your work"

Still sounds relevant to me so I'll resurrect the thread with a resurrected shot, used the advice from this months magazine to reduce the noise in a shot taken at a high ISO, what do you think?

Re: post your pics for critique

Hi. I agree completely. This is a great idea for a topic and it definitely needs to be on the front page.

I feel like a bit of a hipocrite making critiques as I'm a newbie at this but here goes.

Overall I really like this picture. The lighting is incredible. I'm not entirely sure about the silhouettes in the foreground, I like them but for some reason I just think they don't need to be there. (Don't ask me to justify this, just going on gut feel really there) There is a lot of noise in the image when viewed at a larger size, which I think would prevent the picture from being printable any anything above 6"x4". I would love to suggest some neat ways of improving it, but I really don't think I know anything that would help.

Here's an example of a picture that I've taken recently.

    Thanks

    Guy

    Hi Adam,

You've got an interesting shot here that looks like an oil painting effect when viewed at full resolution - not sure if that was the intension. Noise is still a bit prominent in the dark regions - it'd be interesting to see the original for comparison.

Composition is good and balanced (at least to me).

However, with the oil painting effect, I quite like a version that's cropped down heavily to the following. It has a 50's pulp fiction cover type of feel to it.

Don't let anyone on this forum tell you you're not entitled to your own opinion! that's all a critique is, do you like it or not, and then think about why....

Good job on critiquing Wink [;)]

You should try to burn out the light background, crop some off the left side. Next time, try to get a darker background/less cluttered background for the subject. It's a bit busy and detracts from the subject. The reason to do this is that the eye is naturally drawn to the brighter areas of a picture and if that's in the background then it takes the eye off the subject in question.

If you've got the time (and someone else to keep the dog occupied) you could also try to get a shot with eye contact (but this is not needed for this shot...just something to try for in the future).

    Hope this helps...

    Regards,
    Hugh

    PS welcome to the forums!

Re: post your pics for critique

Hevans, Guy, Thanks for the feedback, agree entirely with Hevans "that's all a critique is, do you like it or not, and then think about why...." - spot on!!

Really like the feedback on the shot and like the tight crop. It is very noisy, the result of playing with a new camera and forgetting to reset thingsEmbarrassed [:$] I've learned a lesson at least.

Guy, similar to Hevans, there's just too much else going on in this shot, foreground and background, cropping to at least remove the hand might work and return attention to the dog although his head is a funny angle. Could you have another go now and try the things suggested?

To keep us going here's another shot I've trawled up and worked on a bit, click the image for full size. For background I've desaturated it and then boosted the contrast in the castle wall only, to try and bring out some texture. Tell me what you think:

Adam I like the image of the castle. The water wheel being very dark works for me. If  I could make a comment at all, I would say that the sky could be made darker to frame the walls.

The only thing I don't like about this one are the blown highlights in the sky. Might try to replace the sky with another - that's always a fun and instructive editing exercise, or if the blown highlights are from the processing, maybe try to recover them.

I submit this picture as I love it and so does my daughter. She has an A3 copy on her bedroom wall as she thinks it makes her look like Laura Croft. I have edited it to remove some faint cloud and I have boosted the colour. It could be sharper but I was on holiday so I would have been drunk.

The colour on this one is fantastic and I can imagine your daughter is very happy with it. I've had a look at the larger size and to be honest it looks pretty sharp to me.
One thing I maybe would do is have a look at the levels. I'm not sure if they could do with a slight lift.

This is my critique of the frozen lake.  I really like your photo.  I like the way the light reflects off the ice.  I like the way that you cropped the photo.  Very nice composition and the sky also really adds to it.  Great job!

Here is my shot of these bar glasses already lined up on the bar at a wedding shoot that I was working.  I just couldn't resist the fact that maybe someone was playing musical glasses and I just had to take a shot!

    Hugh, Adam,

Thanks very much for the feedback. I agree completely about the busy background. It is very busy. On the other hand, I actually really like the hand in the foreground, and the fact that the dog's head is at a funny angle. I will have a go at cropping the image and burning out the background (or simply taking the shot again with a less busy background) and see how it turns out. Smile [:)]

I feel cheeky asking but if you wouldn't mind giving me feedback on some of my other pictures I would really appreciate it. Embarrassed [:$]

    Thanks again

Re: post your pics for critique

GhostlyFour, this is quite a nice idea.. technically very good, well focussed and the exposure looks pritty much bang on. The colour is nice, the goldy yellow in the wine is a really nice tone. The only thing that is a bit distracting are the blurred highlights in the background, would be nice to see a similar shot up against a plain background maybe? i dunoo though i dont know alot, this is just my opinion Smile [:)]
