E3 users review please...
Right then, who's got an E-3 and how have you been getting on with it?
Things seem to have swung with the E-3, or should I say, the recent lens releases that surrounded it (I'm thinking the Sigma line up more than the Oly, but also the drop in prices and availability of 2nd hand oly lenses that seem to be on the market).
But I'm interested to hear some honest, real life experiences of people using the camera.
Do you miss the PASM dial?
How quickly can you select priority modes?
Can you use the camera without the LCD screen for all of the basics, such as changing priority modes, CSM modes? Or do you have to access this for most everyday functions?
I haven't heared of any firmware or technical issues (and wouldn't expect to with Olympus), so I'm guessing all is well?
How does it compare to the E-1 in terms of battery life and again, ease of use?
I'd appreciate honest opinions, so good & bad. I know I am all set for buying a D300 (shh, don't let anyone know I might be swaying!) but I read a couple of articles recently that suggest it's not actually weatherproof which is a hugely important factor for me.
Cheers,
Martin.

Re: E3 users review please...
Sorry about that, hadn't finished before posting..
I had the and still do have the e510 which was very easy to use, since my E3 arrived i have spent hours getting to grips with it, and very pleased indeed with the results for the most part,
I dont miss the PASM dial and i mainly use M now on the E3, infact i hav'nt changed it for some months now since xmas infact. i only use the lcd screen for awkward postitions etc, but i have changed setting using it so no probs there, no problems to date with the body at all, Sorry cant reply about the E1 but my two cheaper batteries i bought from ebay are lasting very well iondeed, get a days shoot no probs of about 200 plus raws and have done over 300 on occasion, not often though. only gripe i have is the noise at times, but im still getting to grips with, hope this helps a wee bit.

Re: E3 users review please...
Thanks for your reply Donny.
You say that you leave it in M mostly, but is it easy to switch between the priority modes? How is this done?
I don't mind if it's a simple button press and dial turn, but am not keen about having to trawl through the menu on the LCD to change it. Does it display the mode on the top info screen? I always like to switch the camera back to P mode before putting it down/walking around, just so I don't miss those one-off shots. The E-1 is handy in that the on/off switch combined with the same as the PASM dial.
Also, can you switch between focus mode (CSM) and metering (ESP, Centre, Spot) and focus points (single, wide, 50 point etc) by button presses and the top screen for info? Or is this all through the LCD?
I would appreciate it if you could have a try for me, or see what the manual says about this as it still seems to be an "unkown", even at the Olympus stand! One sales guy finally told me it could be done, but I'm still unsure as to how.
I hear that it is a learning curve even for Olympus users, so I'm not surprised that it has received a few bad reviews where the handling is concerned. But like anything, once you get the hang of it I'm sure it's great. And look on the bright side, it'll be at least three more years before the E4, when you'll no doubt have to learn a whole new set-up ![Stick out tongue [:P]](/emoticons/emotion-4.gif)
Many thanks, Martin.

Re: E3 users review please...
Holding the mode button down and rotating the rear command wheel allows you to scroll through the PSAM modes, if you want to do it one handed you can assign the function button on the rear and press that and rotate the rear command wheel.

Re: E3 users review please...
Thanks Paul. Hoping to get my hands on one again this-afternoon And see what sort of deal I can come to on a flash, camera, 50-200mm (or 90-250 even!).
Oldboy, I was stood next to someone recently, I was firing off quite a few shots of a parade with the E-1. Eventually the guy next to me pulled out his camera (didn't know he had one at first, guess he was nervous about using it) and when he started shooting both me and the missus stopped and looked. It was really loud compared to my camera which had gone unoticed to that point. The camera? A rather noisy D40 The E-1 was a whisper by comparison.
Saying that, we used the Minolta Dynax the other day to finish off some old film and boy is THAT noisy! The focusing sounds awful and when the film wound on...it scared of the birds ![Stick out tongue [:P]](/emoticons/emotion-4.gif)

Re: E3 users review please...
For the money the 50-200 SWD seems a good buy.
There is no way I could possibly afford the 300mm f2.8 though! I did consider the 150mm f2 with a TC, it's not to big and with the 1.4 and 2x TC's would give a good set-up for both wildlife and travel. I am still looking for some user reviews on this though. The lens gets great recommendations but I can't seem to find anyone using it with a TC.
Sigma are bringing out a new lens soon, a 70-200 f2.8 I think. That could be worth waiting for if the price is right. Also, I'm happy with the 2 Macro lenses introduced recently (the 105 and 150mm) poviding they perform I'll be having the 150mm Macro.
Am I right in thinking that a 150mm f2.8 Macro will be heavier and slower than a 150mm f2.8 non-macro lens? So it's not really in the same league as the 150mm f2 from Olympus?

Re: E3 users review please...
Thanks Donny, Paul, Sue and all for your help and info. I had equall amounts from the Nikon side and I've decided to go for the D300 as per my original thinking. I was swayed back to the Olympus briefly, but then I got them both in my hands with a selection of lenses and for me the Nikon was perfect. It feels right and the DX format will meet my needs for many years to come (I hope!)
It was mostly a personal/feel thing so I won't go into a comparison of the two cameras. Both are excellent in their own way I'm sure and I know that E3 users will be very happy with their choice and I'll continue to recommend and admire Olympus cameras. As I say, the D300 just felt too good in my hand, and when added to my other reasonings/future photographic career, it just had to be the Nikon.
I'm working crazy hours/nights from tomorrow for 4 weeks, but I will eventually be getting everything on ebay. If your interested in any of my Olympus kit drop me a PM before then. It won't be a quick sale as I won't have the boxes or a day off for 12 days (I'm away from home). They will be going on Ebay in 4 weeks time.
I have an E-1 (scratched plastic LCD cover, but other than that no marks). Spare Hahnel battery, charger, manual, box, cheap ebay remote, leads etc included.
Olympus 17-55 f2.8-3.5mm lens with Kood filter fitted since new. This is as new, used for a few hundred shots only, bought in February. Boxed, with unregistered warranty card.
Olympus 40-150 f3.5-4.5 lens. A cracking lens as you'll know. This one is in good condition with a Kood UV filter fitted. Boxed, bought in March or April last year.
Olympus 35mm Macro. Bought maybe 6 months ago. With pouch but no box. Mint condition.
Like I say, make me an offer. No hard feelings, if I don't accept you can try your luck on ebay in 4 weeks ![Big Smile [:D]](/emoticons/emotion-2.gif)
Cheers all.
