Someone say "Street photography"? Bring it on. Ah... sunny 16 rules... literally. Smile [:)]

Hi mate, great work and so glad to see you posting work in DC again after an absence.

This is a bull free thread at the moment and hopefully it will stay that way. I know that some people in particular have been to blame for people leaving but I'd like to think of myself as the guardian of this one, so in true Yorkshire style any shinannigans from the gossips and trouble makers will result in a 'YOUR BARED'! response from myself (for what its worth)...lol

    Hi Kev,

I think these are a great start and I'm really chuffed that you felt 'inspired'

If I have noticed anything it that the first shows you have stood in the middle of the street to take a view looking down and have not felt too intimidated to do so, 'great'

Second you have looked for a different viewpoint and noted what is happening around you.

'Your a natural mate, keep taking that compact out with you'

If anybody feels a little uncomfortable with a large SLR on the street then just maybe you should take an idea from Kev on the compact solution, certainly paid off here.

    Great photography

    Tim

Yep, one of those shots I posted was done with film. Anyone want to guess?

It's a shame the actual digital rangefinder cameras are so expensive, but DSLRs weren't cheap when they were first produced.

Erm, it wasn't Kev who took those, it was me Big Smile [:D]

Thank you anyway (I hope the comments still apply!) and thank you Kev as well. I must say I rather enjoyed just ambling around snapping, and not worrying about which lens to use etc.

Kev, (and any other Nottingham bods) its the Riverside festival this weekend, a top oportunity for taking pics of fireworks.

I agree mate, and without starting something here with some members there are possibly a great many people who miss film, but it is still there after all for all to use if they wish to and as digital is so common now you can pick up quite reasonable priced bodies and indeed lenses. In fact its a point to consider on the lens front for anybody who's interested. I use a couple of D2Xs bodies to work with most of the time and I recently bought a 85mm f1.4, its 20 years old, converted and solid glass. Its possibly one of the best lenses Nikon ever made and is as crisp and sharp as a Irishman on St Patrick's day morning.

Thanks for the feedback Dave and he is the last one from me for today as my little girl needs a story before bedtime and she's the boss....lol

This one is on film from my days of carrying a couple of well dented F3's around and developing Tri-X in the back of my car using a black bin bag and a old Patterson tank, some Kodak HC-110 for 90 secs at 22 degrees followed by a 1-4 splash with fix and then straight into the meths to get it to dry quicker...ahhhhh those were the days.

Still enough of that as this is 'Digital Camera' and not 'YesterYear Film Scratch Monthly'

    Joy

Another hint is to shoot with wide-angle lenses, or setting the zoom to wide as the camera will go. Crop the resulting photo down to the bare essentials. Convert to b+w if required.

Big Smile [:D] You can't beat a bit of confusion Big Smile [:D] The sentiment is much appreciated though Tim.

Unfortunately I don't have a compact camera and finances this month (and for the next several Indifferent [:|]) mean I won't be buying one. However, just spoken to a good friend who is letting me have use of his old 3.somthing mega-pixies Olympus something-or-other compact. He's just upgraded so I can have a play and see if I can do some of this street stuff with it. Gonna be a learning curve though because he hasn't got a manual for it Big Smile [:D]

The riverside festival sounds like a great idea for fireworks, also for lots of street stuff with all the crowds wandering around during the day.

Andy, if you or any of the other Nottinghamians want to meet up during the day for some street life or later on for the fireworks drop me a pm and we'll see if we can set something up and maybe even enjoy a pint or two afterwardsBeer [B].

    Kev.

Re: STREET LIFE - Post your street life work here

great thread - given me the impetus to go out tomorrow whatever the weather and take some piccies. At the moment i only have one pic suitable - i've already posted it in another thread a while back but here goes again!

I just really like the movement and the fact that the Girl is just so colourful! I did almost nothing to the image in Lightroom,, just boosted the contrast and a tad of sharpening, i guess she just has very colourful clothes. I was going to convert to grayscale since that is a popular technique for street photgraphy, but it just doesn't work with this pic.

Taken on the hoof in Paris.

Re: STREET LIFE - Post your street life work here

    Bootneck47:

I said before its really just like landscape photography, except urban in nature.

After re-reading this thread I've noticed a lot of comments like 'does this fit', 'Is this street life' etc. Something I think we would all benefit from would be a discription of what 'STREET LIFE' photos are? What is really expected to be seen in such a shot? Things to look out for. What are our own views of what really works and what doesn't. Is it candid or arranged or both. Should the shot say something about society or is it just a record of the moment. A shot of a street could just be landscape / architectural and not really fitting the bill etc.

To start, my own view is all the above have an area in this theme but a lot are just skirting the outside of the root of the subject. The ones that really work for me generally look Candid (though may not be). Also they include people reacting with the urban enviroment (preferably focused on an individual or small group). Portraits can work but generally look better when the person isn't looking at you. (When they look at you the shot generally seems to just say the persons portrait and not their place in the urban enviroment). Too much street and too many people can become unfocused...they still work, but the personnal glimpses into someones everyday life generally are the winners.

This is just my personnal view...Hope it helps.

I'm interested in everyone elses point of view on this. So please discuss, as it will help me focus on what I should look for.

Here's some past ones, that for me explain a bit of my waffle. I think this shot seems to fit OK...

But this one, is possibly just an architecture street shot.....(So to be kind to myself I'd say it's skirting the edge of the topic.) Do you agree?

    Cheers

    Dave

Re: STREET LIFE - Post your street life work here

I suppose I'd guess that the simplest way to define the theme would be 'any shot of an individual or a group interacting with an urban environment'. As you've said, some shots would appear not to conform to the idea but again, I think that applies to many aspects of photography in general... It's all about interpretation.

Take that shot of my neighbour for example... In my eyes, it's a typical example of someone acting within the confines of their environment but to others it may be nothing more than a candid portrait. I think that every picture should tell a story. If it's just a documentary image, then something's been lost from the parameters of the theme. Again, in the case of my neighbour, you could just say it's some bloke with a can of beer in his hand but if you place it in context with his posture and facial expression, to me it shows a sad and common state of affairs in this country...

I think the key to this theme is the word 'LIFE'...

Hmmm! I know what you mean. I was taking it be photographs of the urban environment and people/things in or interacting with the urban environment. Personally I think they both fit the bill though I do see the point you are making about the second one.

That's clarified it then Big Smile [:D]

    Hmmm Hmmmm

If you ask 10 photographs what is street photography you will probably get 10 different answers. Some may say that street life should somehow mirror human society, documenting life as you see it, include some human interaction and be in a public place.

Another view could be.......Street Life photography simply has no rules; it’s free, liberated and with no restrictions of normal photography.

    Cheers David

i will be one of 10 then Big Smile [:D]

i always thought it was to be candid or unexpected, like davids running boys, i know of photographers who have paid people to pose so it looks candid there was one in the big book of photos (i think thats its name) where some guy was paid $2 for looking into a diner window, the shot was superb and looked fairly un setup but to me its capturing a moment, like Tims shot of the people walking past the poster or perhaps an argument in the street or people working at the hand car was etc etc........
