I'm also going to say that I'm a bit fed up with the lack of any recognition I've had in POTD and I'm going to be honest and say that I am a bit p**sed off about it. I'm reasonably confident about my ability as a photographer; thats not to say I think I'm the best, a long way from it, but I think quite a few of my shots have been well within the ballpark of at least MPOTD. Yet nothing. Ever. In nearly 18 months of having a gallery. You'd think that by the law of averages one of mine would have slipped in by mistake by now.

I have to agree with your sentiment Veggie.  Same here.  I thought my gallery was quite good, with some 30 odd years as a photographer behind me. But it seems you and I miss the benchmark somehow.  It's all down to the pin factor I think, and strangely that seems to hit the same galleries time and time again. We've got more chance to win the lottery, mate, than get our pictures up there.

OldBoy, I just won't be looking at or commenting on the galleries that are chosen more than twice in future, no matter how good they are.  As I said before: the way the images are chosen seems nothing but the easiest way counts for the admin staff who, frankly, I don't think really give much of a toss whether it's there or not, and probably see the whole thing as a bit of a waste of time anyway.  I wouldn't actually be surprised if DCM wasn't having a bit of a cash flow problem as well as a staffing problem.  I see the mag has undergone yet another downsizing.  I personly feel the site has got too big for them to handle and they are burdened by its unexpected success.

This argument’s been great to follow as it see-saws wildly from accusations of bias and favouritism towards a few select galleries to howls of outrage as this is fixed and a wider choice of galleries results in people unknown in the forum gaining POTD which in turn causes furious postings by forumites who only want to see ‘active’ members rewarded with a front page shot and backwards and forwards ad infinitum!  Of the ‘current’ members chosen for today’s honour, Cathus has only been back a day after storming off in a huff and Tim’s only become regular again this week.  That’s fine though, hallelujah and rejoice, they’re people we know so it’s all ok.  Give it a week and a few more images chosen from their galleries and we can begin the grumping and moaning again.  I’m sure there are a few people now whose heart sinks when they see they’ve been passed the poison chalice that the POTD has become. 

 

I know, why don’t we get to vote on images we want to see on the front page……Oh yes, that’s right, the voting system was flawed so a popular uprising saw it removed.  Now, however, the apparent lack of respect shown by the magazine in its failure to appoint a 24/7 forum ‘gimp’ to work through the 1000’s of galleries every day and pick a selection of shots that everyone deems worthy of the POTD accolade is causing even more anger and frustration and the impartial and balanced arguments of “my shots are great, why not pick me?” begin in earnest.  Before long there will be calls for the reintroduction of the voting.

 

Why does anyone want it so bad?  If anyone here who’s put forward their own galleries gets chosen tomorrow will you be pleased?  Will it finally be recognition of your hard work and dedication or will it niggle at the back of your mind that you were only chosen because you complained so much?  And if that’s the case, will it really mean anything?  If you’re not chosen does it really matter that much? Is it so important in the grand scheme of things?

 

And then, if you do finally get on the front page, the comments section of your photo turns into a debate thread with argument and counter argument concerning whether or not you truly deserved it in the first place.  Wonderful!  A ‘prize’ well worth the winning!  I truly hope it never happens to me.

Personally I think the voting on gallery pictures should be re-introduced and POTD chosen from photos with an high star rating. :) Harry

I don't think that many people specifically demanded that voting was removed, most of us just wanted the troll who was manipulating the voting to get their pics into POTD to be dealt with. True to form this didn't happen and DCM just went for the easy option and stopped us voting. I'd be very happy for a voting system to be reinstated but it would have to be done alongside a banning of multiple profile owning.

I'm not saying by any means that the photos that do get there don't deserve to be. And if you look back a few pages I've posted to this effect. But if anybody tries to tell me that NONE of my pics have ever been good enough I will tell them they are talking horsesh*t.

But DCM is one of the biggest selling photo mags and throughout each issue they regularly refer readers to the website (heaven knows why seeing as how badly they run it) and I will be honest and admit that yes, I would like it if somebody logs on for the first time and sees one of my pics up there as POTD. But no, its not ruining my life that it doesn't happen, its just a bit annoying that I don't get the recognition that I think I occasionally deserve.

I had a MPOTD the other day, and it was the first time i had been near the front page. It usually does seem to be the same bunch who get up on there, and i thought they chose some of the most recently added work to the site, but some of the work has been on the galleries for some months.
I dont get many views on my work, as many of you probably dont, but i feel that many of us deserve more views, comments, and features on the front page.

I agree with edd. We both have gallerys and i do look forward to looking at potd and usually see same people up on front page like wayne and tim.Most of the time! They Are very good but some of us who have just started up gallerys would like a chance of some fame even if its a days worth!.

Me and edd have been had our dslrs for just under 12 months now and we both think we have improved afair bit. Please take a look at my gallery all comments are welcome. Cheers all

You could try what some others have done. Have a fall out with someone and spit your dummy out, then throw all your toys out of the pram, then leave and join another forum/gallery for a few weeks, then come back and "hey presto" you will have front page shots

To my mind the P'sOTD should be shots with some photographic merit in the opinion of the person choosing it. Now with literally thousands of gallerys to choose from it does seem the lazy route to go regularly to those few that you know contain quality stuff. But I don't think the choice should be limited to those who use the forum a lot. It should be a totally unbiased selection from the entire site, and with so many to choose from then yes, you should stand more chance of winning the lottery.

A sugestion!

There seems to be a degree of disatisfaction at the way that the POTD is chosen. Apparently, and before my time, the images were voted on and this apparently lead to disreputable and underhand practices. There now exists a system whereby some anonymous being at the magazine chooses the images. It seems from the gripes on this thread that that person is ignoring the vast numbers of images that exist on the site and concentrates on a narrow spectrum within the site.

OK, so how about one contibutor being chosen each day to select the four pictures. The mag can email a contributor a week in advance of the day to ask for his or her participation in the selection, with a deadline of a couple of days before the day offered to submit the selection. There maybe a way of registering to indicate your willingness to participate.

You can't be selected to choose more than once a quarter, you can't select your own pictures, and with a weeks notice you won't be able to select current images.

Of course you will not always agree with the selection but there is a wide range of photographic styles within the site and thus the selection process will reflect that.

It would take the responsibilty from the DCM staff, but initially it may require a bit more managment time to start with, but once up and running it should be no more onerous. I also think it would make contributors look in more detail at the galleries and unearth those gems that slip through the net.

Those that are rarely chosen, or if at all, can only then blame their fellow photographers, not some nameless and I think blameless individual in Bath.

One flaw in the plan, you are chosen as the selector, you then contact your mates to see what images of theirs they would like you to select. God forbid that would ever happen!!!    ;)
