I think they've started removing them for the weekend.

    Re: POTD etc

I've been reading this thread for a couple of weeks now thinking about the views expressed but not posting because maybe it looks a bit arrogant to be moaning about your own shots not appearing on the front page. Some of the comments made in the last day or two though have 'hit the spot' in my opinion.

I'm sure, looking at the choices recently we can all see the 'spat the dummy out but just come back to see some old friends' thing going on. I like Abers suggestion though and whilst it may have some limitations there must be a sophisticated way of seeing what people are looking at/commenting on/discussing and therefore what's popular on the day, NOT voting though, that just really was about egos!

Agree with eddo and dominic whole heartedly as well, it shouldn't be an ego thing, but a recognition and perhaps a way of bringing some new members into the discussion threads a little more.

    Will anything change though?

    Re: POTD etc

Havng already expressed my opinion on the value of POTD to the members, I guess the other side of the coin would be to look at its value to DC Mag. The community is a vehicle to stimulate interest in the mag and having the same few faces popping up all the time doesnt sound likely to attract new people so much as a system where anyone might get it. For me the problem with picking photos that nobody has seen is that it undermines the value for those people who post regularly. The two appear to work against each other. Perhaps it would be fairer if each person who wins one is promoted to a "Winners category" that only winners can be in an from which a second photo is taken. Winners then not being eligable for the standard category.

If the issue is really one of time and effort this would just make things worse of course. Its not our decision how to run the mag, but the current situation is clearly causing some dissatisfaction amongs the readers/members.

My feeling is that the site is not so busy as it was year ago, but its just a feeling.

    Re: POTD etc

I totallly agree with most of the comments regarding POTD. There is no doubt that there are a few outstanding photographers and their work is regularly featured which to me is fair enough.

It's up to everyone else to attain their standard to get the same recognition. Having said that, there are plenty of other readers whose work is excellent and who have never achieved a POTD. It's all a question of balance and I think that not enough of these other photographers get a POTD when their work is well worth it. It's not really an ego thing to get a POTD but it must give you a boost ... I wouldn't know !

I personally think that there are too many readers' portfolioos (That'll stir up a hornet's nest !). Can we honestly expect someone to go through over three and a half thousand portfolios ? I would suggest that there should be a minimum of ten pictures to a reader's portfolio (can you have a portfolio of just one or two pictures ?) This would make people make more effort to post their portfolio and vastly cut down the number of portfolios to make it easier for everybody. I have to say that I get quite fed up clicking on to a portfolio only to find just one or two shots.

I know that plenty of people will disagree but it's just a personal opinion !

Hang on, we've only just lost Red Valencia after having it up for the entire Christmas period, then we get lumbered with weekend photo of the day and now we've got Red Valencia up again!!  It's a good photo but for pity's sake, find another good photo, please.

couldn't agree more, i used to religiously visit the front page to congratulate those that had made it. Over the months the honour of reaching the front page has been lost and it is now obvious that shots are just thrown up to fill the space, certainly not the kudos it once had and i doubt ever will again
