    Re: Forum choice RPOTD!!

    Si,

I think you may be being a bit harsh to the Ant and Dev show. They find photos they like and take time to comment on them  and they do it on a daily basis. Not all the photos are what I would choose and I would prefer if they chose older photos at times, but on the whole things are far better then they used to be.

    Just my thoughts...

    Re: Forum choice RPOTD!!

I can't see anything wrong with POTD being chosen from a picture posted on the day. Firstly it must make the task a bit less daunting than having to trawl through thousands of photos; secondly it ensures that the same photo isn't chosen twice by mistake; and thirdly it stops it from becoming stale.

As for the choice not being one I would have made, well so be it. I don't like every painting in a gallery but that doesn't stop someone else seeing something in it I don't.

Guy has crystalised it well and I agree with him 100% — For the reasons he gives I think the selection process gives a broader spectrum of people an opportunity – in so much that it all depends on the 'level of competition' 'on the day'. This in itself provides a big incentive for people to get out there and keep shooting! Its a no brainer that the choice its always going to be subjective but I think that the ability of DCM to be objective when viewing such a diverse range of subjects and styles is to be applauded and should encourage all of us to get out there and try something different.

Thought I'd leave a comment on today's excellent choice of RPOTD. There was much discussion of Dragan's winning portrait in the DCM photographer of the year competition and the statement it was/wasn't making. Contained in Chrissie White' Gallery here and especially in her flickr gallery are a collection of infinitely more powerful images that get there message across without relying on the overt shock tactics of the DCM photographer of the year. All the more meaningful considering the photgrapher is 14 years old. Surprise [:O] Well done DCM staff on a superb choice.

    Re: Forum choice RPOTD!!

DCM.. you were doing so well.. what happened with today's selection?

The top slot and the one next to it are far inferior to the other two MPOTD's and I notice that neither Ant nor JD have commented. I can only assume that the office gerbil was having it's turn today. This POTD is a classic one hit wonder, which isn't so bad when it's a quality shot, but it's got more defects than qualities.

Please, please justify this selection: You've got hundreds, if not thousands of discerning readers who look forward to POTD and this is beyond an April 1st gag.

Well, it is from a gallery with just one photo and it was posted on 1st April. Maybe the gag is being stretched and they are still winding us up . . or maybe we just don't get it. I know I don't, but live and let live.

Hmm. Whilst not defending what the system chooses, I'd challenge anyone to choose 4 photos/images that *everyone* thinks are worthy of being (M)POTD.

... repeatedly... and not choosing the same images twice.

    I'd certainly not manage that.

Well, I've seen the offerings the system's spat out for the current (M)POTD. All I can say is that the script has got to misfire every now and again.

You are completely right in what you say Dave, if you could please all the people all the time you'd be in line for a sainthood. It was rather novel today to read comments that were'nt as benign as usual, perhaps the members should be more forthright in what they say.

There was a lack of justification from the usual selectors, which is a little puzzling.

Considering the comments this photo has provoked, it'll be nice to see a response from DCM  - tomorrow perhaps?

On a slightly different note - you've got to feel a bit sorry for the photographer in question - this thread could not of made easy reading today.

Having been on a few months I do not understand references to recently updated. Occasionally I have changed the albums or added new pics  - does this constitute updating? If not how do you update your gallery as I cannot see any obvious buttons to do so. I am not desperate or even deserving of POTD but do wonder how you get your pics looked at if you wanted to be considered.

That's called taking the rough with the smooth I think. We are all open to critism, that's what this is all about. Everybody tries to criticise constructively but sometimes you are left wondering why a picture is posted in the first place.

From the way I understand it I believe the selectors of POTD go through the galleries that were updated the previous day. If they don't find a worthy contender then they go through the day before. I'm sure I've read that in a thread here - if not then maybe I should start taking medication
