So high fuel costs drive UK hauliers off the road and we get more and more foreign lorries full of European bought fuel in their double tanks - those lorries paying nothing to use our roads and often not up to UK standards .....that's a good idea is'nt it?!

Rest assured Sue we are suffering too. Fuel prices in the UK are based upon what the fuel in the delivery tanker actually cost so resale prices can vary every week, or a couple of times a week depending on how busy a garage it is. Here in Germany the resale price is based upon world market prices so the pump prices can change daily more often than you can shake a stick at. I was also in France over the weekend and whilst in previous years it has always been cheaper that also seems to be at an end with fuel costing more or less the same. Another plus factor you have in the UK is that Supermarkets can sell fuel which is often cheaper. This is also the case in France with Super U being the biggie for cheaper fuel but not here in Germany darn and blast it. With the usual German efficiency, petrol can only be sold in petrol stations. Re: Random thought of the day

I think one thing that's really not helping is the big influx of foreign lorries - perfectly legal I know due to our membership of the wonderful EU. There's been an upsurge of accidents involving these lorries and the perception is that many don't meet the rigorous standards our lorries have to meet and that they get away with things UK drivers can't, as well as coming over filled to the brim with cheaper fuel.  We seem incapable of coming up with or enforcing any kind of law which would level the playing field - can't see the French putting up with their government falling over backwards not to infringe any EU law even if their own workers lose out!

And, of course, in his zeal to appear 'green' Gordon Bean, in his last budget, decided to increase the road tax on many cars seen to be 'gas guzzling' or more polluting. Good in principle i'm sure, but retrospective. Many of these cars are not luxury models but simply the sort of thing you can get a family in. Tax will in some cases double from around £200 to £400. Not only will this hit many low earners who bought these cars second hand and are struggling to keep them going, but will also render many cars almost worthless because dealers just won't want them. So it will have a big impact on the car trade too - and believe me we're really struggling! Fine to bring in taxes on new vehicles to encourage people to buy the least polluting and most economical cars possible but, at a time where many people are having great cash difficulties it's just another blow for the less well off. I can understand why to many 'green' just means an excuse for taxing. Still not sure if GB is totally incompetent or just does'nt care - he's certainly looking more and more delusional these days!!

Since a large proportion of MP's have a background in the law, do you think that when they frame new legislation they build in loopholes for them and their bretheren to exploit at some later date? A sort of  milch cow for the future. After reading the expenses scandal it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest!

Re: Random thought of the day

LOL Sue - good thing you don't live over here then otherwise the air would be blue from morning until night.

    1. Lorries are not allowed to travel on Sundays or Public Holidays except by special license limited to such things as fresh foods etc. Result, every lay-bye that ever there was, every service station on the motorway and every border crossing e.g. France > Germany is crammed full with poor lorry drivers attempting only to deliver what we the consumer are forever demanding in our insatiable greed. We treat these guys with such disdain in order that the roads are quite for us on these days in order that we can go out and burn yet more fuel. Last Thursday - Bank Holiday for us - lorries park up. Sunday - rest day - lorries park up. Monday - lorries on the move - absolute chocker block chaos.

    2. Approx 6 months ago we introduced the Unwelt Zone sticker requirement - we're now going greener than green. Or so the Government would have you believe at least. In reality it's yet another money making exercise. On the approach road to many towns (expanding daily as more Town Halls find this is a good money spinner) you will find a shield containing either a Red, Green or Yellow circle under which is Frei, meaning free. Our cars now have to have one or other of these same stickers displayed on the front screen with the colour being determined by the type of exhaust fitted (found on the registration document). Cost for sticker, €7. Result - on approach to town look for sign and sticker. If it says Green Frei and your car has only a Yellow sticker then turn round and go home - you aint entering this town. Result - lots of relatively new cars, even Mercedes, banned from towns and cities. Effect - general uproar amongst the population. My car, a Golf V Diesel - no particle filter fitted and not worth it for €750. Result - I am a very bad boy - pay extra €30 per year road tax. At the same time however, the exhaust from my car is excellent  - pay €7, get Green sticker and am allowed to drive everywhere.

    3. The A8 which runs close to us is the main artery for traffic heading from Northern Europe to all points south. Want to go from England to Austria - use the A8. Need to travel from Paris to Prague - use the A8. You're getting the picture yes? Enter the Government who think this is a good way of making money let's introduce a Motorway Toll for lorries. Only lorries of course because lorries and their drivers are such nasty things and people aren't they by delivering goods that we demand? Result - haulage firms now purchase mass quantities of GPS devices, fit them to all the lorries in their fleet and programme them to avoid motorways. End result - monster juggernauts now diverting off motorways and cutting through housing estates, children's play streets and in fact all over the place. Now whose fault is this? People blame the lorry drivers but it is the Government who have forced up delivery costs with high fuel prices and now the motorway tolls. If the costs of goods in the shops increased to reflect the higher delivery charges then people would still complain so the poor old lorry driver/firm is in a no win situation.

So don't be too hard on 'Gordon Bean' Sue - each country has their own version and I think that they all originate from the same school for politicians.

Re: Random thought of the day

Problem with Gordon Bean is that he was hailed for so long as this brilliant chancellor - now it's all starting to unravel and we can see what he's really like. Years when we had it fairly good - world economy good - but in this country, put down to Gordon's great skills - now things are getting bad - world economy bad - nothing to do with Gordon!

What might be a good idea with regard to lorry miles, would be actually buying locally produced fare/food thus reducing the need for some long distance travel - but with everything produced in China and green beans being flown in from Africa that ain't gonna happen! If politicians seriously wanted to do something then it would be a matter of restrictions we'd have to put up with for our own good. As it is we keep on polluting and getting gridlock but as long as we pay then that's OK  I still struggle to believe their 'green credentials' when they start talking about the necessity for more and more airport expansion - now that is something we could do without. Sorry, flying should be more expensive.

Re: Random thought of the day

Can't tell you how often I've had this same discussion with my wife Sue. Me - well I'd make a terrible Prime Minister or Chancellor and would probably end up being assassinated within the first two weeks because I don't suffer fools too gladly and also I'm not one for making too many compromises. The wife - she'd also make a terrible Chancellor (as in German Chancellor) because she is far too compromising, soft hearted and believes in live and let live.

Yes I'm all for a strong Government - now where shall we start. No Mrs Jones you can't have your green beans today, in fact you can't have them next week either. They are not in season over here yet and I have banned them from being imported. Now now, don't cry you'll soon get used to it. Oh yes, I forgot to mention, you won't be able to drive your car next week either because the country hasn't got any oil. Yes, it's a tit for tat arrangement - you know the sort of thing, you've banned the import of our beans and so we're not selling you our oil. And you are right Mrs Jones, customer freedom of choice doesn't enter into the equation and the car issue won't last long because I've also decided to ban cars being manufactured that are over 1 litre in capacity, don't do at least 100 mpg and carry 16 people - this is to allow for car sharing in case you were wondering. What's that Mrs Jones, if BMW where your beloved hubby works are not allowed to produce cars over and above this specification then this will cut down on their exports and your hubby will be made redundant. Oh, and all the subsidiary firms that supply BMW with parts and others such as catering - my oh my the list goes on. Yes well don't worry Mrs Jones he'll be well taken of with unemployment benefit. Please don't tell me my job Mrs Jones - I know full well that taxes will have to go up to meet these extra unemployment benefits and that the Government will have to raise the Pension age because there won't actually be enough people in work to meet the extra financial demands. Yes I agree Mrs Jones, it's a bl**dy nightmare trying to balance the books and in fact I'm giving up. Why don't you take up my position Mrs Jones as you seem to have all the answers.

No, not for me Sue - I wouldn't know where to start with the running of a country and it's finances. You know what they say - 'you can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time. Big Smile [:D]

Re: Random thought of the day

Agreed, balancing the books must be a nightmare, but you do sort of think that those with all that experience and talent should have the foresight to see what will happen when they do things like bring in tax changes that will hurt the poorest. Another u turn seems in the offing because all those labour mps in marginal seats know they'll lose their jobs at the next election - everything is done for political reasons and the need to retain power at all costs. And the galling thing is that they think we'll fall for it. Next year will be interesting because we'd normally expect a big bribe to convince us to vote for this government in a 2010 election - not much money for that. This is all probably a ploy to ensure they lose that election so that the next government have to deal with the mess they've made and things get even worse!

Repossessions set to reach another high - housing market in the doldrums - why the hell don't they get rid of HIPs?? Might be a slight help - no-one seems interested in them - they were told it was a bad idea by housing experts, but as usual, they knew best. Glad I moved last year and got a 10year interest fix!!
