Firstly, this is my first year submitting and I am new to Digital Photography. How oftern does the editor make a choice? and secondly, how do readers choice work. If it works on votes then how come I have tried voting and the photograph still shows no votes?

I'm a bit puzzled as to why voting will take place, why? In the FAQ's section there is an answer to the question about late entries, intimating that even if you enter an image the day before the closing date it will have the same chances as one that has been commented on and voted on, so why bother?

Still puzzled, no answer to my question is forthcoming. I see JD has posted a whole string of items, one for each category in the competition, asking for discussion about your photograph and your views on other entrants. Why?

Are we being asked to "sell" our pictures to the judges or influence other entrants hoping to garner votes, votes that are meaningless because the judges select both the shortlist and final selections.

If any picture needs any blurb to prop up it up it doesn't deserve to be considered as a viable entry, it has the inherent weakness of a failure to communicate, a title should suffice.

Can i just say something, i thought it PHOTOGRAPHER of the year not, photograph. This has been pointed out on another forum but maybe we should be able to send in say up to 15 pics at low resolution so they can see if the pictures are consistently good, instead of the odd one turning out good. Don't get me wrong, previous winners do deserve winning the catergory. But i think that if they are going to select indivdual photos it should be PHOTOGRAPH of the year.

The idea of a forum is to communicate; the thought behind the threads I created is that we'd like to encourage entrants of the competition who aren't registered here to discuss their entries and provide tips to others on how they took the photo and what, if any, post production was used.

As for the voting system, it's simply a way of showing your support; and while the Reader's Choice doesn't directly influence the Judges' decisions, the Reader's Choice page is the default that they'll see when they log on. There's no 'selling' involved, and no 'blurb' neccessary - this forum isn't part of the competition, and isn't monitored by the Judging panel. However, when last year's winners have come back and explained how they took the shot to the forum, it's been great for other members to get ideas. We'd just like to encourage a bit more crossover between the forum and POTY.

Well I'm gonna enter   Never thought I'd say that, but what the heck.  I've got a couple of suitable images already, but I'm going to try and submit 5 for every category.  I wanted a project and even if I don't get a prize atl least I'll have pushed myself

Never looked upon it that way but having read your post it's made me think and you're absolutely right. Either the format should be changed to read 'Photograph of the Year' or more of the photographers work should be submitted to represent his/her skills before a judgement can be made as to 'Photographer of the Year'.

One way of achieving this would be for all those interested to register their interest in the competition and to elect a 'Category(ies) to which they are interested. One image per month per category should then be submitted (max 12 in any category) within a certain time frame. The EXIF data should be complete showing the date the image was taken and confirmed where doubt exists by the submission of the original image. Points should then be awarded by nominated judges taking into account any criteria they themselves may wish to set e.g. composition and exposure etc etc. Following submission of the 12th and final images points can then be totalled up and it goes without saying that he/she with the most point would be announced 'Photographer of the Year: I'm sure DCM could come up with something creative in the event of a tie. This might not be the best solution but at least it sure beats the 'daft' idea (imho) of images being allowed to be entered that were taken anything up to 5 years ago. I would love to hear of a justifiable reason from whoever dreamt this one up.

Nice idea. Sadly though, as with most other forms of data, the time/date information (both "File date" and "Date/Time") in the EXIF data can be manipulated.

Sorry to appear negative about this but all these seperate discussion threads for this competition sitting in the unanswered column hidding earlier unanswered items, that may really have mattered to the users who entered them, seems daft to me. It's all too formal and Big Brother for my liking.

By all means have a section for the competition and if necessary all your seperate threads but please move this block of unanswered items on before they start getting nonsense entries just to get rid of them.

Bit confused by this 'Editor's Choice' thing. I looked at the Urban category yesterday evening and clicked on EC and was quite staggered to see I was second. I had a little look around the other categories for a bit and came back to urban and my pic was nowhere to be seen. I've noticed the EC order has changed 2-3 times today too.

Now if the Editor really is spending his Easter Sunday and BH Monday rating pics then that is only to be heartily commended. But it did occur to me that maybe its just a random thing set to rejig them every few hours or so...?

Hmm, not sure what's going on here. I was under the impression the Editor hadn't chosen any shots at all yet. It might be a glitch - will get back to you tomorrow.

So how does the readers choice work? It cant be on votes!

I agree, some of the photos on readers choice if you click on them do not have any votes at all!   so how can they be readers choice!!!

I will not be entering I did not agree with the winner last year, I also think it is not a photography comp, but a photograph, it should be done on rounds and category winners which should go on to do thier best work.  Choosing one photo and not any of thier other photos is wrong.  How can someone win on one photograph.

 Have you noticed also the editors choice has stopped running! I agree that it should be Photo of the year however, there should also be a photgrapher of the year . Sometimes you are in just the right place at the right time to capture the shot, but for those who wait for hours for the right shot and do it over and over again their needs to be something there as well. I know students 11-14 yrs, who have just been in the right place and taken the great shot, very lucky however, some of them take hours to set up the right pieces, wait for the right moment and understand how and why it works. I am still waiting to take a good shot for the dawn till dusk section. Have you looked at some of the kids shots? One question though, how come we cant leave comments on their efforts?
