    [Discussion] Action & Movement

    Action & Movement Category
Photographs that dramatically capture a single moment.

This thread is for discussion of your entries (there's nothing wrong with giving yourself a little exposure - post a link!), the techniques you used to create your shot, and to point out your favourite entries from other entrants so far.

    Hi

Just wanted to get people's opinion about the entries for action and movement, i seen quite a few photographs that seem total irrelevant to this category. there are some really good photographs i worry that they wont get noticed under the seas of photographs that don’t seem to capture the essences of this category i.e. photos "that dramatically capture a single moment".

here are some photos which i think are very good.

How long is a 'sinlge moment' and how many photos can you take in that time? You see I like sequences and composites and the single photo doesn't always capture the moment. I understand that there is an alternate category for these images but  its not Action and Movement which I think my images are about.

    Hi Dave

Some sequences and composites shots work and some appear rather odd or without umph! I guess it is down to personal taste as with most works of Art

    Hi

Please confirm that "multiple exposure" shot is a single moment, or not. Is not it adding significant element of photograph.. current exposure to prior one? The first exposure already constitutes a photograph or not?

Like Andy, i would appreciate any comments, criticism.. any things, on my works. Thank you.

Wish i could browse a few more photographs, give comments and vote.. but really gotta go, see you later.

    Regards,
    Merry

    Re: [Discussion] Action & Movement

I wish to use the remaining time to think of the last 2 pictures i should put in Creative Vision category.. but get stuck with only 3 pics that show me rather than having additional 2 pics that show me imitating someone else's idea after browsing many portfolios.

Who am i to share my less than a year experience in front of world photography masters? Please forgive my arrogance.

When i made Far Away, the ship was moving and the car i was in was too.. the ship is sharp but the bush by the road is warpy. Ever look out the window from in the moving train? Then i think of the airplane.. it moves at great speed in the sky, but from i am on the ground it seems like crawling midair and i could use far low shutter speed to freeze it than to freeze a few people running 1 meter in front of me at far low speed compared to the airplane. The i think of the a plank of wood rotating in the middle.. the middle perspective shift speed is always slower than its outer ends.

There i have the convergent panning.. to have a crawling airplane effect in short range.

Good luck with the competition everyone. :-)

    roundabout way

I took this of my daughter on a roundabout in a local park.

Chose shutter priority to get a slow shutter speed then spun the roundabout whilst sitting in the middle and tried to hold the camera as steady as possible to keep my daughter clear whilst blurring the background.

    Hi

What do you call this technique? i call it divergent panning.. as the spinning roundabout does the panning for you, but it is only a personal call. I do not know the real photographic word for this technique, i google around and there is only panning. I think i begin to melt before your pic. :)

I like the sharpness against the background rushing by, very effective.

I think it's a great technique. I added a picture of my friend drumming:
