    Just Curious.... how many lenses?

As a matter of interest, how many lenses do people have and do they think they have everything they need?

I am about to put a couple of lenses on Ebay and leave myself with 3 which I think pretty much cover it all, but I have noticed that some people (oldboy Stick out tongue [:P]) have every lens going.

I'm going to be left with:

    Sigma 18-50 f2.8 Macro
    Nikon 50mm f1.8
    Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR

    Am I missing something?

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

Whether or not you are missing something is more down to you than anyone else. If you are taking photos at long range then yes but you will know if your range is lacking for what you want.

I am not lucky enough to have a huge budget but over a few years I have managed to get a few although one or two may go soon.

Sigma 18-200 (which will probably go)

    Sigma 12-24

    Sigma 24-70 F2.8

    Canon 50mm F1.8

    Sigma 70-200 F2.8

    Canon 70-300 is

    Sigma 170-500

So as you can see I have it pretty well covered without going in to all pro lenses. I rarely use the 170-500 but have ued it more in the last few weeks at polo matches than I have in the last two years before that.

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

    I have the (all Canon):

    • 17 -40L - on the camera most of the time
    • 28 - 135 - most of the remainder of the time, and
    • 100 macro - seldom used but very much appreciated when it is needed/used

These have filled and satisfied all my requirements for several years and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. That said, I may consider purchasing (if the rental option is too expensive) the 100 - 400 or something of that order for a trip next year to Lundy Island where I feel sure the Puffins won't be obliging and step up in front of my other lenses. I am a great believer in quality over quantity. Wink [;)]

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

Err one the one that's stuck on my Fuji S6500fd it's a 28-300.....allegedly, I don't reckon it's QUITE that good, but if I were to upgrade I would start of with a 17/18-50ish range then a 70-300ish and see how I got on with those and then save some money for some better glass along the way....and eventually go up to a 100-400 or even 500 IF the price was right.....

Forseti if you are going to Lundy Island you also need to consider the following spots (am in Bideford for the first May bank holiday been going there for 8 years now as my in-laws are from there)

Hartland Point (mind your footing though)

Hartland Quay (FANTASTIC rock formations in the sea but check the tides)

Clovelly (privately owned village that is VERY photogenic YUP really)

    Exmoor......speaks for itself....

Just some ideas for you depending on how long you're there for etc...

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

It depends on what kind of photography you do, but i don't think you really need the 50mm f/1.8 but is up to you.

    I have:

    18-55mm f/3.5 - 5.6

    55-200mm f/4-5.6

    70-300mm APO Macro f/4-5.6

Only young so not after anymore and i think i have got it pretty well covered.

Thanks for the recommended places to visit - I know them all well. Lundy and the Puffins have been a life-long wish of my wife but somehow or other something else has always come up. A problem of having far too many interests and hobbies. So next year I'm going to surprise here - now I just hope I nail down the right time when the little blighter's will be there. Wink [;)]

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

Hmm OK. Remember this is all from memory and I'll be sticking my head in the toy cupboard this afternoon.....

    10.5 fisheye
    30 / 1.4 Sigma
    50 / 1.4 & 50 / 1.8 Nikon
    18 - 55 Sigma (maybe 3.5 - 5.6?)
    18- 50 2.8 Siggy (broken)
    18 - 50 2.8 "macro" Sigma
    24 - 70 2.8 Nikon
    14 - 24 2.8 Nikon
    Lensbaby 2.0
    Teles - Nikon 2X, Sigma 1.4 and 2
    85 / 1.8
    105 / 2.8 micro
    35 - 70 2.8
    70 - 200 2.8 VR
    120 - 300 2.8 Sigma (actually in a different cupboard because it's so big)
    18 - 200 VR

    I think that's it.

Do I have enough? Yep, can't think of anything else I really need though if I was going on Safari I might rent something longer.

    For a wedding I used to take 5 lenses with me (30, 50, 18-50, 70 - 200 and 10.5) plus maybe the 12 - 24 (recently swapped for 14 -24) or the 85 / 1.8.

I might actually reduce that if I get another D3 to just 24 - 70, 14 - 24 and 70 - 200. When everyone else is moving towards them I find I'm moving away from primes. The new zooms are awesome and the D3 doesn't absolutely need the primes like the D2s do.
Kidography. It's like photography. But more fun.

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

Having just switched back to Canon -

Canon 50mm f1.8 - cheapest way to get a small, light fast prime for low light  - and a handy walkaround lens.

Canon 200mm f2.8L - super sharp and fast focussing

    Canon 2x extender to make the 200mm a 400mmf5.6

Still pondering what to get in the way of an all purpose zooom. I try to buy second hand where possible and if it does'nt get used it gets re-sold.

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

Just sold off some to help fund my D300.
    Left with,
Sigma 18-50 F2.8 macro (lives on the camera)
Nikkor 18-135 (my "going to the zoo" etc lens)
    Nikkor 50mm AFD F1.8

I'd happily trade the Nikkors in on a Sigma 50-150 F2.8 and may well do so soon, that'd be all the lenses I really need.

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

Jonathan... you have far too many lenses! I'm jealous (even though they're Nikon). Wink [;)]

I have the following (from widest to longest):

    Sigma EX 10-20mm

    Sigma EX 18-50mm f2.8

    Canon EF 50mm f1.8

    Canon EF-S 18-55mm Image Stabilised

    Sigma EX 50-150mm f2.8

    Canon EF-S 55-250mm Image Stabilised

Jessops AF Extension Tubes (I know it's not strictly a lens)

I just got rid of my Sigma EX 105mm Macro 'cos I hardly ever used it and I can get in close with the 50mm and the extension tubes - My Powershot A640 has a 1cm Macro mode if push comes to shove and it works brilliantly!

Still on the wishlist: - The new Sigma 150-500 image stabilised (I need to save up a fair bit of cigarette money for that one yet though).

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

    This could be interesting!

    18-55mm (Loaned out)

50mmf/1.8 (On loan from someone else)

    60mm f/2.8 macro

    85mm f/1.8

    400mmf/5.6L

    17-40mm f/4 L

    24-105 F/4L

    70-200F/4L

I do fancy the 135 f/2 L and 300 f/4 L, but having got the MkIII this year, don't think it will happen for a bit. Sad [:(]

Re: Just Curious.... how many lenses?

I've been feeling secretly guilty about having too many lenses - reading this thread makes me feel so much better. Big Smile [:D] I have:

    Sigma EX 18-50 f/2.8

    Sigma EX 30mm f/1.4

    Nikon 50mm f/1.4

    Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8

I'm thinking about getting a Lensbaby also... Smile [:)]
