    Reader's / Editor's Choice

    I have been keenly watching the 2008 entries coming in and voting on images I enjoy.  However, I am interested to know from the competition organisers;

What is the purpose of the "Reader's Choice"?  Will there be a prize or acknowledgement of some sort or is it merely a means for readers to sort the images?  I actually like the idea of this function as it gives me an idea of how popular some images are (including my own of course).

What is the purpose of  the "Editor's Choice"?  Same questions, replace "reader" with "editor".  Oh, and when will the "Editor's Choice" start to work?

    Demosthien,

the thread called POTY 'General' discussed the points you raised. Below is JD's comment on the Reader's Choice.

"As for the voting system, it's simply a way of showing your support; and while the Reader's Choice doesn't directly influence the Judges' decisions, the Reader's Choice page is the default that they'll see when they log on."

All this means is those with the greatest number of friends & aliases on DCMag get their pictures on the front page. Put another way, it enables those for whom the term 'fair play' means nothing more than a ride on the dodgems, to push their portfolio in front of the simple, honest photographer.

I have to say that im in favour of Darley's comment. This system does not neccessarily reward the best photographer but the photographer with the most contacts. I've searched through many photos in this competition so far and many amazing shots have failed to make 1 vote.

Then why not start the ball rolling and vote for them!

I guess it will come down to market forces: if it's felt that those with an (artificially-generated or otherwise) large fan base are deriving an unfair advantage, then the judges' sense of fair play will be called into question and many people will question the wisdom of bothering to submit in future. DCMag and the sponsors will be well aware of this.

Let's see what happens before we start pointing fingers and jumping to conclusions.

What a bummer... I have no friends!!!!!

Would one of you talanted people do me a favor and just take a glance at my portfolio and let me know what you think???  I would appreciate any direction given and would be happy to return the favor.

I am very impressed with the quality of work submitted to this site!

    Re: Reader's / Editor's Choice

Can you still comment and vote after the closing deadline? Maybe then the most popular pictures will move up a bit and not be pushed away by new entries.

By the way, I do not know anyone who participates in this competition and my friends are not registered so they cannot vote, BUT, I have regularly looked at the entries and commented/voted on pictures that 'did' something for me. A lot of people, but by no means all, have 'returned the favour' and looked at my photographs. In this way I have collected quite a few comments and votes and got to 'know' some of the other photographers.

I can recommend this 'strategy' to everyone.

(I am by no means a 'real' photographer, just a housewife who is trying to teach herself digital photography.)

    Re: Reader's / Editor's Choice

I can fully understand this comment. I have never entered an online photography competition before, but I have enjoyed looking at, and voting for other peoples work. As a result of this, I have been delighted to earn a few votes for myself, and I have hopefully picked up a few ideas on the way as to how I can improve my own shots

    Re: Reader's / Editor's Choice

I have just been looking at your portfolio for the competition, and enjoyed what I saw. There is no way I could comment on technicalities (I have a bog standard digital compact that I keep in my handbag) Because I have the opportunity to log on and vote three or four times a day, I have found that many people have responded in kind by looking at my portfolio, and I suspect this is how the majority of votes are generated
