    Re: The Greatest....

Don't listen to much in the way of rock 60s/70s stuff any more. After a big sell on ebay I've still got around 1000 CDs of many genres.....sort of depends a lot on the mood and the time...

Got into jazz a bit late...perhaps it takes time....like the cool stuff of the classic 1950s period.......John Coltrane - excluding the late stuff which is 'difficult' to say the least, the man was a genius......Thelonius Monk ...eccentric ......Miles Davis ...'Kind of Blue' best chill out album ever......Dave Brubeck.......Chet Baker...the vocal stuff, the epitome of cool......and, of course the sheer class of Ella Fitzgerald.......makes a lot of rock stuff seem so simple and samey......

Folk, roots, country and blues.......Dylan, Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Kate Rusby, Norma Waterson, Maggie Holland, Lal Waterson, Natalie Merchant, Iris Dement, Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, Michell Shocked, Hank Williams, Ramblin'Jack ElliottMemphis Minnie.....the banjo genius of Tony Furtado and the eccentricity of the late great John Hartford......the awesome sound of Whirling Pope Joan - the hurdy gurdy is so sinister somehow........

Obscure 1950s rockabilly...the more obscure the better....and the sheer fun of genuine  black 'doo wop'.....and of course 1930s British dance bands and crooners...Al Bowlly rules....Geeked [8-|]

These are the bands and type of music I listen to mainly.

Queen for sheer energy and performance

Dire Straits  for Mark Knopfler's guitar playing and gritty voice

Eric Clapton for his guitar playing

Jean Michel Jarre for sheer energy

    Mike Oldfield for background music

Celtish (Irish) dance etc to stir the spirit

Miles Davis for the real modern Jazz experience and especially "In a silent way' and 'Aura' albums

    Enya for her beautiful voice

Light to medium Classical of all kinds for relaxation

    Re: The Greatest....

yes Eric Clapton is brilliant, especially the song 'Layla', bloody brilliant.

One man who i think is amazing is Martin Simpson. If you like folk music you will probably know who he is, but he is absolutely amazing live. I went to one of his gigs at a local pub, i had got all the permission for the taking of photos 2 weeks before hand and ended up only taking a mere 4 photos because i was just so amazed at how good and skilled he was.

    Re: The Greatest....

Yes Martin Simpson is one of that wonderful group of musicians who emerged during the folk rock era - he did some superb stuff with June Tabor, who should have been on my list of greats. I shall get out my 6 disc Electric Muse collection and have another listen!

Ooh - I also missed Waterson Carthy off my list of greats! Have to get their albums out to play now. Glad you like English folk - most people deny it exists or make jokes about morris dancing etc., but it's just as good, if not bertter, than Irish and Scottish.

Early Scorpions –  Ulrich Roth is a guitar God.

    Thin Lizzy

    Re: The Greatest....

yes i really like Gary Moore's blues stuff but i am not too sure of his thin lizzy stuff and his more modern Metal stuff. The work he did with the BB king and Albert Collins was brilliant. One of my fav songs that the BB king and Moore did together was 'Thrill is gone', amazing guitar work in that one.

I saw Gary Moore in Cardiff approx 20-25 years ago when he was playing his ''matel'' stuff. He didn't start releasing his blues until quite a bit later. I far prefer his blues.

Stevey Ray Vaughan (if you like Texas blues)

Little Caesar (American Biker-blues rock band)

    Mozart

    Jeff Healey

    Walter Trout

Has anyone mentioned Twisted Sister or Motley Crue, or how about Van Halen or Ted Nugent???

Oh, the kids put me through things like High School Musical, Hannah Montana etc. etc. I think I should be more of a rebel. Does anyone remember Sky? I don't mean the satellite TV company either!

    Re: The Greatest....

There's been a lot of talk about guitarists on this thread and yet no-one has mentioned possibly the best guitarist ever:

    Joe Satriani Big Smile [:D]

I have been lucky enough to see him live on 3 occasions, once in the G3 concert with Steve Vai (another guitar legend) and Eric Johnson.  I believe that they did a re-run of that too but with Yngwie Malmsteen instead of Eric Johnson.

This is a geeat thread!!!  I have seen some names here that I haven't heard of before so am going to have a go at downloading some of them and have a listen.

    Cheers everyone

I must have the memory span of a goldfish!!!!!  How could I have overlooked the likes of Satriani, Malmsteen and Vai, whose playing on Dave Lee Roth's album ''Eat 'Em And Smile'' was God-Like. Do you remember his cameo role as the devil's guitarist in the film Crossroads with Ralph (Karate Kid ) Macchio as the young upstart?

I've seen some good drummers in my time, but Mykey Wilson was definitely the best. I first saw the Dust Junkies in Sas Fe. I saw on stage, one bass drum, a snare, a high-hat, and one crash cymbal. I thought they had forgotten the rest of the kit.

The they started to play - not only were they amazingly tight, but Mykey made two drums sound like a full kit being played to within an inch of its life. Unbelievable.
