    Raw Update

For the past week I've been trying to download the latest Raw update from Adobe. It seems that the site is undergoing a scheduled service - for a week!!!!Angry [:@]

Has anyone else been trying, have you succeeded, if so, how?

    Re: Raw Update

Your're not the only one. I had the same experience a couple of weeks ago now and repeatedly kept getting as far as some darn page half written in Japanese advising of the maintenance problem. I persisted though and eventually got through to the download page although my nerves were raw (no pun intended) at the end of the process. Have just tried again now on your behalf but no joy - I can't wait for the next release when no doubt I shall get to enjoy the experience all over again. Angry [:@]

You might want to try posting on either the camera raw or bridge forums - even the lightroom one wouldn't go amis. I did this a while back now and some kind gent with obviously more computer sense than me provided an ftp link which worked marvelously. Anyway, I feel your pain. Crying [:'(] I think the problem is that even though Adobe is a huge company in terms of the products they supply, they obviously lack in server capacity/power.

Thanks for your efforts guys, however, it's bad news-good news time.Sad [:(]Smile [:)]

Bad news is that all links end up on the same page which is undergoing maintenance.Sad [:(]

Good news is that on one page of the Adobe site, I can't remember which I've been on so many, I find that because I'm shooting in DNG format I don't need the raw update.Surprise [:O]Big Smile [:D]

Well I wouldn't be too sure about that if I were you. In the same way as different camera manufacturers have different raw files and Canon even go so far as to have different variations of the same raw format i.e. a raw file shot on a 40D is not the same raw format as one shot on a 30D although they are both .CR2 files. Crazy or what. Anyway, you may or may not have noticed that whenever Adobe update Camera Raw they also update the DNG converter. What I'm saying is, it's a safe bet that your DNG file will not be the same as Adobe's latest DNG.

Nothing is ever 100% for sure but it's pretty much guaranteed that Adobe will continue support for their DNG format and that Camera Raw will continue to read both files original raw files as well as those raw files converted to DNG. If the manufacturer of your particular camera doesn't provide firmware updates to keep pace with Adobe Camera Raw and the latest DNG converter (because the DNG format is Open Source) you might find there comes a day.....................well you get the point?

This may well be a lot of bo**ocks of course because I know very little of who is doing what to whom as concerns DNG. It's Open Source as previously said which means anyone can add anything to it but I wonder sometimes how do we as users know what's what with DNG? With raw files it's easy - it's either CR2 or NEFs etc but as far as DNG goes - whose doing what to whom?

Well, if you can use DNG then it's the same as camera raw and also works with earlier copies of CS. Big Smile [:D]

Alan - Just seen your post about DNG but I think you will find, like Windows, DNG is backward compatible with previous versions. Big Smile [:D]

    Re: Raw Update

Yes get your point OB and perhaps I could have explained it a bit more clearly. Lightroom as you know uses the same Camera Raw pipeline as CS3 but how one's files are processed depends on what version of Camera Raw Adobe were using when one's particular brand of raw files were used in the calibration process.

For example, Camera Raw v3.7 and by implication the DNG converter were in existence when my Canon G5 raw files (CRW) were calibrated by Adobe. Now when I open up Lightroom and look at either the original raw file (CRW) or a DNG converted version of the same image it shows me that Camera Raw v3.7 is being used in the rendering process. The same thing applies to previously imported CR2 files from my 30D. However, recently taken CR2 files and subsequently converted to DNG files using the version 4.4.1 converter show up as Camera Raw v4.4 being used in the rendering process.

So in short, how the image is rendered (either in Lightroom or CSx) depends on the version of Camera Raw in existence when your particular model of camera was calibrated by Adobe. That cannot change unless Adobe go back and redo the calibration process all over again which is doubtful. However, raw files converted to DNG using the latest DNG converter will and do show up as being rendered using the latest version of camera raw but as the OP is already shooting in the DNG format and therefore not using/needing to convert to DNG he is essentialy using the DNG version current when his camera manufacturer built it. In essence it could become an outdated raw format unless firmware is issued to upgrade it. I really don't know too much about the processess involved here so much of this is guesswork of course.

    Re: Raw Update

I see what you are saying but I think you have missed the point. The DNG converter contains an process to convert the raw file to DNG, and each time a new camera comes out a new process is just added, so the process which rendered his original images, is still there but the DNG file gets a bit bigger in size. Re: Raw Update

    Thanks for the link, Oldboy.

Not a single bit of documentation with the download though (which version it applies to, how to install). The link on the site for this seems to be undergoing maintenance.

    Could anyone let me know:

    • does this update (Camera Raw 4.4.1) apply to Elements 6.0?
    • How do I install it?
    • is there a (working) link anywhere to information on the above?

    Cheers

Found this link, and had a guess at which folder to put it in, which worked:
