    Re: Laptops

Just bought one of these babies :D 9" screen, 120GB hard drive, 2GB RAM. Paid just under £400 for it. It's not out in the UK yet (being a technology journalist has its perks) but it's the perfect little computer to store RAW photos on when I go on holiday etc, and it's lighter than a Macbook Air.

...and spent another £20 to whack the memory up to 2gb.

Can I ask where you got your memory from at that price?  I've been holding off buying 2GB for my HP as I'm not sure how much life is left in the old thing, but for that price I'd be happy to upgrade.

    Hi Martin.

    I got mine from here ---> http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_11&products_id=103445

It works out at about £22 with the postage but I ordered mine along with some other stuff anyway. They also say that if you order two of a given size, they'll make sure you get a matched pair which'll speed things up a bit.

If you're running XP, go to www.crucial.com and run a system scan... It'll tell you much memory your machine can take and what specification it needs to be.

    Hope that helps,

    Best wishes,

    Re: Laptops

Ooh that's a nice little computer JD, I was looking at some of the smaller ones but thought I'd better go for something bigger as I'd be photo editing.

Well I ended up buying one, it had everything I needed it to have and seemed like it'd be good for the photo editing too, it's a HP DV6710. Please don't tell me it's awful or something, eep, hehe. I'm pleased with it so far, thought I've not tried to put anything on it yet.

Nothing wrong with HP's, as they produce servers that run lots of the network traffic. Big Smile [:D]

I can beat that JD, as I have a Asus with a 7in screen and the keyboard is external. Big Smile [:D]

You have the EeePC? Asus came to visit Future a week or two ago with the EeePC 900, with 9" screen. It's really nice, and I very nearly got the Asus over the HP, but the 20GB hard drive and 1024x600 screen is no use for storing and viewing RAW files when I'm on holiday. As I'll be in California for most of August, I need something lightweight that I can store my photos to. The HP has 120GB hard drive, which is about right for 3 weeks of RAW shooting! Smile [:)]

    Re: Laptops

Of course now I realise PSE 3 doesn't work with Vista. Ahh dear. I'm assuming Vista is the thing to have as I gather PCs are going in that direction but it's rather irritating that I'm going to spend out another £70 when PSE 3 is perfectly good for me. What other things do PSE 5 or 6 do? :) I'd have CS ideally but I can't afford that.

    Re: Laptops

Do a search of the net and have a look at the Dell site. Due to the less than enthusiastic welcome that Vista received in it's early days Microsoft were more or less obliged to extend the sale of XP which a lot of people, me included, have been extremely grateful for. Just a few weeks ago I purchased a new Desktop from Alienware (now a subsidary company of Dell) having previously purchased a Laptop from the same manufacturer that came with XP Pro. By the sound of it though the same spec Laptop is way beyond your requirements/needs and they do cost a bomb. The likes of Comet etc won't stock XP machines anymore of that I'm pretty sure. Another reason you might want to consider doing a search for an XP machine is that Vista is itself on the way out. Yes, hard to believe I know but another Windows OS (Windows 7) is in the experimental stages at this moment and rumoured for release 2009/10.

    Hi Martin,

    Look here: - http://www.crucial.com/uk/

Stick in your machine details etc and see what price comes up.  They are very competitive and make a load of the RAM in circulation anyway.  In other words you are buying direct rather than with the Hp/Dell/Sony etc premium.  The delivery service is excellent as well.

When going from 1GB to 2GB just make sure you don't have 2 slots both with 512Mb in, else you will need 2x1GB modules rather than just a 1GB module if that makes any sense.

    Cheers,
    Steve

Thanks Steve, I have seen their website and have a quote of £117 for 2x 1GB of RAM.  That's why I found the £20 unbelivable!

Scratched the monitor last-night with a steel rule (stupid).  It's ok and luckily not to long or in the middle, but it's reminded me how old the laptop is getting.  Think I'll stick with what I have for now and not bother upgrading it.  I'll need a new one eventually so I'll save my money for then.

    Re: Laptops

Yowser, apologies that is expensive!  I just bought 4GB (2x2GB) of DDR2-800 for my laptop for £65 from them, which I thought was good value.

Obviously they are not universally cheap!

    Cheers...

Did you check that link I gave you Martin?

It's most definitely genuine - I have 2gb sitting in the laptop I'm typing this message on and it's come from 7dayshop.com.

    Re: Laptops

Martin, I've got a couple of 1GB sticks of the type you are after which you can have for £25 plus postage. I upgraded my old PC from 512MB to 1GB and finally to 2GB before finally deciding to get rid of it altogether. The sticks aren't new - only a couple of months or so. Fully functional or your money back of course. Big Smile [:D]

Also for sale: nVIDIA FX5200 Graphics Card with Digital and Analogue outputs. Pioneer DVD RW DVR106-D burner. Sony DVD-ROM DDU1612  Reader. 1.44MB Floppy Drive.
