Re: Rucksacks - help (sorry) and bags review...

OK, bear with me because usually choosing the bag is more fun that realising the bag hasn't worked out quite how you thought it would. I've got an old airing cupboard full of bags I don't use any more. After too many years of disappointment I've finally found a set up that works for me. I've through Nature Trekkers, Orions, Trekker AW's, shouldser bags, bum bags etc. The first question is always how much you want to carry and over what sort of terrain. My set up works for my kit while wanding through the Lakes where I'm lucky enough to live. I carry a D2x, 12-24mm, 70-200 2.8, and usually a 60mm micro. Theres then the usual clobber of filters, often a meter, tripod, waterproof, jumper, butties, flask, bits and bobs. My breakthrough was using an ordinary rucksack as the starting point, A Lowe Alpine of about 50L. Onto the waist belt slips a Think Tank Holster for the body and 12-24. On the other side of the belt slips on an old Lowepro Minimagnum or a small Lowepro lens case for the 60mm Micro. Both go on the ordinary rucksack belt and are tethered with cord to stop them from moving forward. The 70-200mm usually sits in a Lowepro lens case atached through the compression straps on one side of the sack and this is balanced by the tripod slipped through the straps on the opposite side. At the moment the rest of the bits are in an unbranded small size bag in the main compartment along with all the rest. it carries beautifully, is completely customisable and can be varied according to weather, distance, kit etc. There always space for something if needed or it can all be cinched down small if necessary. It may sound odd but it really is the only thing that's worked for me.

Thanks for that Mike, I have an image of you tramping over the Lakes looking like a storm trooper Big Smile [:D]  Sorry.  I know where you are coming from though, it's not easy and I always say you can never have too many bags!

How wide is the belt loop on the holster?  I'd like to measure the hip straps on my rucksack to see if it would fit, the straps are quite wide.

I have a 45litre Berghaus pack that I used in the lakes this weekend actually.  I popped the camera in a CCS case inside the pack and this works ok for me when hiking/scrambleing.  I don't take the tripod or extra lenses on such an outing, "making do" with the 17-55mm f2.8.  I am considering the Kata camera strap as this allows you to attach the camera to the D-rings of the rucksack taking the weight of your neck.  And Op Tech do a neoprene sleve that fits over the camera like a glove.  It stays attached (hangs off the camera like the old leather cases) and I think should be ideal when used in conjunction with the strap.  I am also considering the Low Alpine climbers camera bag as a replacement for teh CCS case, it fits with a harness and the camera sits over your chest in this.

For this rucksack I want to be able to squeeze all of my gear in, carry a tripod seperatly (or modify a bag myself), without it being so big I'm knocking people over in the street.

I tried the Lowepro mini trekker yesterday and fear that it is just a little bit to small.  It could have done with been 2" longer giving more room for my butties and jacket.  The Kata R-103 measure up on their site.  I'm just going to check the Tamrac site and see what they have to offer as they are quite a bit cheaper.

    Cheers,

    Martin

Re: Rucksacks - help (sorry) and bags review...

The search is over - cheers all - I have now ordered a Kata R-103 and Op Tech tripod strap from Morris Photo.  I shall post a pic of it when it arrives, fingers crossed it is as I hope!

I think it comes with a camera strap (to attach the camera to the front of the rucksack) but if not I'll be placing another order for this as well.  Way over my budget but then I received an unexpected payslip this-morning from a previous job.  Money owed or something.  Ask no questions... Stick out tongue [:P]
