Royal Photographic Society ( Distinctions )

I have  recently viewed the critics of the RPS on this site and untill recently I might of agreed with the comments, but I have recently become an LRPS and I can tell you it is not easy and took me several attempts.

We can all produce some fantastic images on the computer, but thats it ( on the compter ) the LRPS distinction is all about producing top quality prints which is what the paying public require.

There are some very talented photographers on this site, but some in my opinion seem to overdo it in photoshop.

As for the recognision of the Distinctions, a local BBC producer had seen my prints on sale and contacted me to be interviewed. I have also recevieved orders & commisions since achieving the distinction so to anyone interested in the RPS I would say go for it.

The RPS is there to further photography in all its forms and amongst many other things allows any photographer the opportunity to measure his or her skills against a yardstick that is set by a panel of experienced and accomplished photographers.

We can all post images on DCM and get the occasional pat on the back from fellow forum members, and that's gratifying when it happens, but does it give any indication of progress in our skills as a photographer? I think not.

When you "bit the bullet" and put your photography up for scrutiny by the Licentiate panel of the RPS, you stepped outside the cosy world of DCM and now you have a recognition that your photography is progressing and that you have a talent for the art form.

As you say it's not easy, you don't win an LRPS, you earn it.

I totally agree with these comments, to earn something through RPS is an achievement, I was honoured to pick up a ARPS on Weds and I'm very pleased with that most especially as I was seen to be able top go straight in at that level. The distinctions are not easy at all and any achievement here should be something that your very proud of, and as Abers says, when your ready move on to the ARPS and FRPS and go for it!

    Be Inspired!

Re: Royal Photographic Society ( Distinctions )

Congratulations to you both on your recent awards!

Having dabbled with photography as a kid I am now in my late 20's and taking it up again, despite having virtually no time.  My Dad has always been a very keen (amateur) photographer since well before I was around.  In fact he's rather good at it and I'm pretty ashamed to admit that it's taken me this long and posts like this to make me realise just how good he really is.  He has more letters after his name than a brain surgeon; including FRPS and multiple international equivalents.  I hope to emulate him and you guys some time in the future.

When I visit him up in Cumbria (I wish I could get up there more) I now view his work and browse through the hundreds of exhibition and show catalogues in which his pictures feature in a totally different light.

As you say Tim "be inspired"!  All the images on this site inspire me, but not one as much as my Dad does!  Hooray for him Big Smile [:D]

    Cheers,
    Steve

Re: Royal Photographic Society ( Distinctions )

Congratulations Dave and Tim.Big Smile [:D] Well done, for both stepping outside your comfort zones, and for achieving the distinctions.

I've looked at the awards booklet and can see that the requirements look pretty stretching. I like to have a project to work towards and this is something I might try for in the next year.

Out of interest, what subjects did you choose and how did you select the final images? It strikes me that the thought that goes into putting the selection together to the required standard might be as challenging in many ways as taking the pictures.

Congratulations Tim well done. The next step is the big one!

Eileen I always used to say that you should achieve some sort of distinction for entering your panel in the right category, something like RCRPS, Right CategoryRPSWink [;)]

Whilst the RPS distinctions are no pushover, the society provides advice a-plenty to help would-be applicants.

The first 5 are a selection of pictures from full daylight to night & the next 5 are sport orientated.
