I have a pic and increased the canvas size to give a white porder around the edge.

I now want tho fade/bleed? the edge of the photo into the white background.

I thought I could do it by adding a new layer above the pic filled with white - addin a layer mask then adding a gradient to the layer mask.

This works for one side - but when I try to addthe gradient to the other side - the new gradient replaces the old one. How do I add multiple gradients to the mask?

I'm sure it is easy but I cant figure out how to do it - perhaps there is a better way to do it?

Easiest way is make a duplicate layer then fill the background layer with white then activate the top layer (image) select the rectangular marquee tool and set about 50 pixals feather (you may have to experiment with this depending on the size of the imag ) then select inside the image with the marquee tool and then hit Ctrl + I to inverse the selection then hit the delete key.

From memory, and mine's not too good.

1: Click add new layer.
2: Use rectangular marquee tool to draw a border part way into your image.
3: Go / Select / Inverse.
4: Go / Select / Feather, (set around 15 pixels).
5: Use fill bucket to fill the border with white.
6: Go / Select / Deselect.
7: Use the opacity slider on the new layer to give the right amount of bleed.

When happy flatten and save as.

thanks guys - both ways work but perhaps I didnt explain too well.

I have 2 pics - one portrate and one landscape - I want to create an animation for the web swapping between the 2 pics.

So I thought I could have a final size high enough and wide enough for both.

So i used canvas size to get the extra white around the pic so both pics now the same size with white borders.

I then added a white layer above the original with a layer mask, then was trying to use a gradient on the layer mask to fade in each of the sides but each time I draw a gradient it replaces the previous one - is there a way of getting "multiple" gradients on a mask?

While I was playing I manage to do it but cant remember how!

Not sure why you cannot do this with the gradiant tool if using Photoshop 

But if your using elements you will need to use a work around as the gradiant tool only works on one side at a time on a layer mask.

So create a blank layer above your image and set the front swatch as white then use the gradiant layer tool.

TX - That is exactly what I want

It looks like you can apply multiple gradients ONLY  when part of the gradient is transparent - thanks for including the screen shot.

If I think real hard it sort of makes sense.

I knew there had to be someone out there that could do it.

If you ever visit Phalaborwa in South Africa I will buy a beer or 2 at our Lodge (our reserve borders Kruger Park - Phalaborwa is about half way up) great sunsets and sunrises, plus of course all the animals. The latest in our reserve are a new giraffe - 1 week old and a baby Eland
