    Noisy Canon 24-105mm IS USM

I've just acquired myself a Canon 24-105mm f4 L IS USM lens and have noticed that the IS system when starts and stops sounds like it got a bunch of roadwork going on inside.  I took it back to Jessops this morning thinking it was faulty and to try another but it was the same so I asume it's normal.  I can't beleive that on an L lens the IS system would be noisier than on a normal IS lens.

Anyone else got one of these and noticed how noisy it is?

I have this lens and it does make a noise - you can hear it compensating if you move it - and starting up you hear the gyro's

Mmmm!  My one is as quite as a church mouse.  I sometimes have to put my ear to it to check that it's working.

Out on a trip to Kew Gardens today. I spent most of it using my 100mm macro lens which is as quiet as a mouse but then thought about this thread so gave my 24-105mm lens a test. My lens is also as quiet as a mouse. I wonder if the shop got a bad batch?

Mmmm It was a different Jessops I tested than the one I bought it from.  I'll try another Jessops later today (Poole TC) if possible and see if it's any different.

The lens seems OK and works fine atm - just Noisy

Well I took the lens to Jessops in Bournemouth.  They agreed it did sound noisy so they tried the lens out of an unopened 5D kit/package and one from the shelf and they all sound the same.  They even tried mine on a different body so I presume what I'm hearing is normal for this lens

I would have expected better tho from an L series

Well maybe it depends on what you class as noisy compared to the others on the thread?

Unless the noise is a problem in itself (ie you're taking weddings and it sounds like a washing machine) I'd keep the recipt and see what happens.  If it is a mechanical problem I'm sure that it will let itself know the more that you use it.

Perhaps fire an email or letter off to Canon so they have it on record, in case it fails just outside of the warranty.
